View Full Version : Pena Released; Signs with the Yankees iloveblackpeople28 03-26-2006, 12:41 PM Looks like he's gone for good. This is according to ESPN.com flipscrackers 03-26-2006, 01:17 PM He'll be missed by some, not missed at all by the rest. Darth Thanatos 03-26-2006, 01:58 PM SHIT I loved Pena, and will miss him dearly. JS 03-26-2006, 03:18 PM I don't get his move. Not that we let Pena go but if we did it 7-10 days ago we would have only owed a small portion of his 06 salary not the full 2 million. Why did they wait? I will put money on Boston going after him, and cutting Choi. H1Man 03-26-2006, 05:29 PM I personally think that we should've kept Pena for his left-handed bat but I understand why the Tigers choose to release him. But I would've much rather released Young and platooned Thames/Gomes in the outfield and Pena at 1st/DH. JS 03-26-2006, 07:12 PM Does anyone know where Josh Phelps stands with the team? I liked his ability in TO and TB and think he would make a decent bench player. H1Man 03-26-2006, 07:14 PM Does anyone know where Josh Phelps stands with the team? I liked his ability in TO and TB and think he would make a decent bench player. I think the Tigers released him a few day ago. JS 03-26-2006, 07:16 PM Damn I am out of the loop, I listened to the game online the other day and was happy to here he was on the team now he is gone. Reason 6,789 I hate living in EL Paso. Glenn 03-28-2006, 03:39 PM So what did we end up getting for Jeff Weaver? Bonderman and German? The deal is still a winner, despite what BA said at the time (I was pissed at the time too) http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/news/020705weaver.html The Tigers, by contrast, would have been better off saying no. No to the Yankees when New York came looking for Weaver, who was easily Detroit's most attractive player and had a reasonable contract. And no to the idea of passing on the Yankees' young players in exchange for the Athletics' package. WTFchris 03-28-2006, 04:48 PM I won't miss Pena. Too bad we couldn't get anything though. He's got power but all he does is hack away. He's a poor poor man's Barry Bonds (minus the intentional walks). If he learned to work the count he could be deadly. Anthony 03-28-2006, 11:55 PM Dont let the door hit you on the way out. H1Man 04-07-2006, 01:52 AM Pena waiting and hoping for big-league comeback Ex-Tiger, Ranger, A's first baseman is in the Dominican Republic practicing and waiting for his phone to ring. Carlos Pena expected Opening Day of the 2006 major league season to be a big one for him. He finished last season strong for the Detroit Tigers. A few months later he signed his richest contract, just over $2 million. He figured this would be the year he finally established himself as a bona fide major leaguer with the Detroit Tigers. Instead, he is in the Dominican Republic practicing and waiting for his phone to ring. The Tigers released the 27-year-old power-hitting first baseman a week and a half ago. Rather than waiting for a call in his offseason home in Orlando, he returned to his native country to train. “I felt very good physically going into spring training but, as soon as I got there, I knew it probably wouldn’t work, that they didn’t have confidence in me,” Pena said. “People were always asking me if I was going to be released or traded.” That uncertainty weighed on Pena and may have been one reason why he struggled in spring training, hitting just .160 with one home run. “I never felt comfortable, but I was hitting the ball pretty good and playing good defense,” Pena said. “The hits just weren’t falling. I didn’t feel like I was getting any backing. I (finally) went up to the manager (Jim Leyland) and asked him what was up. I said I couldn’t go on like this. There was so much uncertainty, everybody asking me what was going on, all the time. He didn’t tell me much. “After that, I talked to the (general manager), and he said they were going to release me,” he said. “I asked why they didn’t do it in December or early spring training when I had a better chance to catch on with someone else. He said they couldn’t let me go because I finished last season so strong.” Pena and his family are well-known in Haverhill. He has made appearances at Haverhill High and elsewhere, flashing his trademark smile and offering a soft-spoken but sincere message for young people to believe in themselves. His younger brother Omar Pena was picked up by the Kansas City Royals after spending last year with independent Worcester in the Can-Am League. He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and spent two years in the organization before being released. Picked up by the Royals in the offseason, Omar pulled a muscle in spring training and will likely rehab for a couple of weeks before being assigned to one of the Royals’ minor league clubs. Does Carlos Pena, who received $688,525 in termination pay from the Tigers, have any preference where he winds up? “You know where my first choice would be,” said Pena, referring to the Red Sox, his favorite team while growing up. “But I just want to find a good place to play, where I’ll get the opportunity to play and help the team. The money is not important. If I lose money, who cares? I just want to play.” Pena came on strong with the Tigers late last year. After a slow start — he was batting .181 after 41 games — the team sent him to the Toledo Mud Hens in Triple A, where he hit .323 with 11 home runs in 63 games. He then returned to the Tigers and hit 14 home runs in his final 37 games. m ,To stay sharp, Pena decided to return with his wife, Pamela, and 5-month-old daughter, Isabella, to the Dominican Republic, rather than stay at his home in Orlando. “It’s easier to find people to work out with, to throw me batting practice,” Pena said. “My agent has spoken with several teams, but there is nothing concrete yet. I hope something comes soon, but I’ll be physically ready when it comes.” Pena said his best years are in front of him and that he can be a boost to any number of teams. “I think I’m at the peak of my career, and I’m ready to break out,” Pena said. “I look at a guy like Miguel Tejada (the Baltimore Orioles’ All-Star shortstop), and he was hitting like .230 in his first few years, and David Ortiz (of the Red Sox) struggled for a while. I feel I’m about to hit the part of my career when it all comes together.” http://www.edmondsun.com/prosports/cnhinsprosports_story_095043537.html H1Man 04-10-2006, 03:54 PM Sub-plot of the week: Will Carlos Pena find a home? The lack of interest in Carlos Pena, who was recently cut loose by the Tigers, is somewhat surprising. He's a decent left-handed power source and an exceptional defender at first base. Also, Pena seriously heated up toward the end of last season, hinting that he might finally be poised to realize his long-simmering offensive potential. The Tigers released him because of a positional bottleneck and Pena's lackluster spring numbers. Still, he makes sense for a number of teams. In particular, if the Yankees signed Pena they could get Jason Giambi's noxious glove off the field by sliding him into the DH spot. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5490314 H1Man 04-16-2006, 05:36 PM Yankees Give Carlos Peña Another Chance The Yankees signed 1B Carlos Peña and RHP Jesus Colome to minor league deals yesterday. Both players will report to the team's spring training headquarters in Tampa before being assigned to Class AAA Columbus. "It's another safety net for us," New York Manager Joe Torre said before last night's game against the Twins. Peña, 27, cleared waivers from the Tigers on March 30, making him a free agent. He signed a $2.8 million, one-year contract with Detroit before the season that wasn't guaranteed. He hit .235 with 18 home runs and 44 RBI in 79 games with the Tigers. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/15/AR2006041501156.html Darth Thanatos 04-16-2006, 10:46 PM Cool. I'm glad he's on another team. If he gets called up I'm sure he'll put up great numbers in the ballpark. He plays better D than Balco Giambi and is also a better hitter than Williams. It would be funny as shit if he somehow won World Series MVP. Anthony 04-16-2006, 10:56 PM Sometimes I wonder about you... [smilie=anxious.gif] Train Wreck 04-17-2006, 03:25 AM Cool. I'm glad he's on another team. If he gets called up I'm sure he'll put up great numbers in the ballpark. He plays better D than Balco Giambi and is also a better hitter than Williams. It would be funny as shit if he somehow won World Series MVP. Considering, he usually starts hitting late in the year, its good for a team that will be playing meaningful games late in the year to pick him up just in case. H1Man 05-31-2006, 04:12 PM Keeping tabs: When the Yankees signed former Tiger Carlos Pena to a Minor League contract in mid-April, it appeared almost a given that he'd be coming back to Comerica Park in a New York uniform for this series. Instead, the Yankees have cleared up their uncertainty at first base, and Pena is in Triple-A Columbus hosting Buffalo. Pena entered Monday batting .246 (31-for-126) for the Clippers with six home runs and 16 RBIs. He has 36 strikeouts, but also has 24 walks. "We're aware of him," Torre said on Monday, "but right now, we don't have a spot available. We have an outfielder [Bubba Crosby] coming back, and we don't know how we're going to get him in." Pena's contract reportedly included an opt-out clause that allows him to become a free agent again if the Yankees hadn't promoted him by May 2. He decided not to exercise it, though it's believed he has another such date later in the year. |
