After a successful three-game road trip, the Detroit Pistons return to an arena where they never seem to lose.
The Pistons put their 14-game home winning streak on the line when they host the Atlanta Hawks at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
The run is Detroit's longest in a single season since a 15-game home winning streak from Jan. 26-April 2, 1990. The Pistons also have not lost a game in regulation at the Palace all season. Detroit's only two home losses came on Nov. 25, 120-114 to Washington in double overtime, and on Jan. 7, a 94-90 overtime defeat to Utah.
Detroit is at home for seven of its next nine games, and 11 of its final 17. The Pistons need to go 12-5 to break the franchise mark of 63 wins, set in 1988-89.
The Pistons wrapped up their 2-1 road swing with a 108-103 victory Saturday at Charlotte. Detroit scored more than 100 points on all three games after reaching the century mark just once in its previous 20 contests.
Despite the impressive output, the Pistons went scoreless for more than three minutes late in the fourth quarter Saturday, but allowed just one Charlotte free throw over that stretch to help them hang on for the win.
"The biggest thing that I was impressed with was the last three or four minutes, our defense was (good)," Detroit coach Flip Saunders said. "It we played like that for 48 (minutes), we'd make things a lot easier for ourselves."
Richard Hamilton scored 23 points to lead six Pistons in double figures, but he arrives back home a bit lighter in the wallet. The NBA fined Hamilton $5,000 Sunday for throwing a ball into the stands during Friday night's 105-103 loss at lowly New York.
Chauncey Billups had 20 points -- including four 3-pointers -- in Saturday's win, and Tayshaun Prince added 18 as the Pistons shot 57 percent from the field.
The victory helped Detroit avoided losing consecutive games for just the second time this season. The only time the Pistons dropped two in a row this season was Feb. 4-7 at Indiana and Atlanta, respectively.
Zaza Pachulia lifted the Hawks to a 108-107 victory over Orlando Sunday when he tipped in Joe Johnson's missed layup with 2.4 seconds remaining in overtime to snap a four-game losing streak.
Johnson scored 40 points for the third time this season and added 11 assists, but Hawks coach Mike Woodson said Pachulia's effort was the main reason for the victory.
"He's been our workhorse all year," Woodson said. "I've said he's kind of been my MVP because we pretty much have played all year with one big guy. He's done all the dirty work. I'm constantly yelling and screaming at him because I need him. And he responded, big time."
Pachulia pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive end. He scored 13 points, his third consecutive game in double figures.
The Pistons have won five of the last six meetings in the series, including the last two at the Palace.
