ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - Hasim Rahman has been chasing a legitimate heavyweight title for most of this decade - or since he lost the belt he took away from Lennox Lewis in a stunning upset in 2001.
Lewis beat Rahman in the rematch and many have dubbed Rahman's initial victory in South Africa a fluke. But Lewis is long gone from the game, and Rahman, now 33, just might be the most established of all the champions in a chaotic division.
He'll need to prove that Saturday night against James Toney at Boardwalk Hall. The winner of the 12-round bout will take away the WBC championship.
Rahman believes Toney will be toted out of the ring well before the fight on HBO goes the distance.
"I'm going to bloody him up, swell him up and punish him,'' Rahman said. "I'm going to make him find a way out of there; he's going to get out of there just one way or another. You know, he can go out on his own volition or he can get carried out of there. One way, he's getting out of there before 12.''
Rahman was preparing to face Vitali Klitschko in November - a fight that was postponed three times - before the Ukrainian retired. In the interim, Rahman beat Monte Barrett, and when Klitschko gave up the title, Rahman was declared the organization's champion without ever beating the titleholder.
In Toney, he'll fight a former WBA champ. Toney outpointed John Ruiz last April, only to be stripped of the crown when he tested positive for steroids. He was fined $10,000 and suspended three months by New York boxing authorities.
But this is boxing, and Toney quickly has resurfaced as a contender for a different version of the heavyweight crown. Only the third former middleweight champion to move up to the top weight class and win a title, Toney is out to prove he can do it again - this time without flunking any drug tests.
"It's all right here,'' Toney said, pointing to his head. "And heart and determination. I'm 37 years old and I feel like I'm 27. I'm getting better with age.''
Toney (69-4-2, 43 KOs) beat Dominick Guinn in a lopsided, 12-round decision in October.
"After March 18, I want every boxing writer on their hands and knees to kiss my feet,'' he said. "Ain't nobody in history who's done what I've done. Give me my respect. And if you don't give it to me, I'm going to take it. Then I'm going to spit it back in y'all's faces.
"People say Rahman is bigger and stronger, but he's lacking one area, and that's heart. And I know how to fight better than him better than anybody, really.''
Rahman (41-5-1, 33 knockouts) has had a longer taste of being the champ, albeit not much longer before Lewis won their rematch. He's not only thinking about knocking off Toney, but beginning a string of wins that will eliminate any doubts about his skills.
"I want some title defenses, and it starts with James Toney,'' Rahman said. "A devastating victory over him is going to go a long way to legitimizing not only me as I stand as champion now, but it will add a lot of credibility to my first reign as champion.
"I always hear people say after it was too late, `If I only had another chance.' I was the heavyweight champion before, and I found myself saying the same thing. If I only had another chance I would do this differently, that differently.
"God has blessed me with another chance. I don't feel like I'm too old. I feel I have a lot left to give to the sport of boxing.''

James Toney is about a 2 to 1 favorite and everyone's betting on the Rahman win with would be the payday bet. This is the first watchable Heavyweight match in awhile. Lets hope it does more to help the division that used to be so dominant.
