Well, the "current gen" has just about come and gone. Who won? Clearly the PS2 dominated in sales, the Xbox had the most bells and whistles, and the Gamecube was.....well, the cheapest. Which did you enjoy most?

Xbox was the best overall system

PS2 garnered the most sales largely from their established brand name and insanely massive game catalog (even if only about a 3rd of them were any good)

Gamecube had its qualitys Mario and Zelda is probably the extent....

Did i SAY Xbox had a better set of games?
no i didnt they had some definite flops (Star Wars Obi Wan, World Championship Horse Racing)

Xbox has the better online experience, better graphically, just all around better hardware

what do people say they like the most about PS2.....half the time its the fact that they get GTA 6 months before the people on XBOX get it???

and theres just something about memory cards that rubs me the wrong way

once again thats bs. outside of halo. most of their online games arent that hot. i remember when people tried to tell me that cheating and glitching doesnt happen online on xbox. they were pretty off on that one, especially on madden.

graphically? it really isnt that far ahead of ps2 honestly. but no doubt it came out later and had a chance to get the jump on the graphics power.

im still pissed about that wackass campcom vs snk online for xbox. [smilie=angryfire.g:

memory cards? so fucking what. i've had the same 2 memory cards for 3 years now and i dont look to own the 50+ games i'd need to max em out. games use much less memory these days on cards.

and on top of everything else they have a piece of shit controller for the xbox. i hate that damn thing.

The Controller grows on you

I'll admit the original Box cont was whack
but the S-Type is a solid controller

and its bigger so if you are squeezing it tight its less likely to give you pain in the hands like the smaller PS2 controller might

You've tricked yourself there. I've played with both long enough and im sorry. But you had to of talked yourself into that one. Those XBOX controllers suck and most people i know shell out dough to get different shaped xbox controllers similar to ps2 style.

xbox controller=wackesy controller ever. the 360 is a lil better i guess. but the xbox one sucks.

Some developers refuse to make xbox only instead of multi platform port games because of how much they hate that controller.

Its all good. Like i said before I concede Xbox's stronger hardware all day. Nothing to hate on. Its got a stronger engine and had ample time to capitalize on that coming out later. But it doesnt have better games IMO. And those controllers are Le Garbage to me.

I do find it ironic that people think the PS3 isnt gonna be stronger than 360 with its processor and extra time to tweak it up.

Fraserburn

I have no judgements on the Xbox 360 or PS3 yet

from what i've heard though the 360 doesnt look "amazingly" better unless you have a fully tricked out HD setup

and also when i looked in on the PS3 i've seen that they had to take it bakc to scratch almost and are in the rebuild process.....

the Blu-Ray disc is intriguing because it holds so much more information than the HD-DVD disc so the possibility for bigger better games exists...

as for games on the current gen
as i said before the biggest PS2 game you hear about is GTA which has been brought over the the xbox anyway.

I havent found the latest Final Fantasy's to be all that intriguing
and sports games are flat out beaten by the Xbox versions

off the top of my head i cant think of any PS2 specific games that are head and shoulders better than anything the Box has to offer.

I like them all for different reasons.

The XBox has the cleanest, sharpest graphics,
but the controller sucks. I love NBA2K6 though.
XBox Heavy Rotation: NBA2K6

I got a Logitech wireless for the PS2 and that stepped
it up a notch. Better selection of games and
Tekken5 > Any fighting game for any other system.
PS2 Heavy Rotation: Madden 06, Tekken 5, NBA Live 06

Gamecube's colors are so vivid they make your eyes
bleed after a while, in a good way (LOL).
Mario games are addicting as fuck. I like the controllers.
GameCube Heavy Rotation: Mario Strikers, MarioKart

As for the original question:

PS2 is better for RPG's and strategy based games. They do have a few FPS and action games but thats not the systems strong suit.

The XBox on the otherhand is better suited for FPS and action/simulation based games. Also if you like multiplayer (more than 4 players), XBox is the way to go thanks to both Live and System Link.

Except for a few franchise titles, half the titles are ported between the consoles anyway. As far as graphics go, the XBox is clearly better. And the controller (the S-Type) is actually pretty solid.

Yea Me and the whole country of Japan is hating. [smilie=arnold.gif]

Why the Xbox Sucks It Up in Japan Microsoft's new Japanese Xbox czar explains why his company just had to discount the console again.

In a press release sent out to Japanese retailers yesterday, Microsoft's Asian division announced that the price of the Xbox in Japan will drop to 16,800 yen (about $154) effective November 20. On the same day, Microsoft will also release a limited-edition "Xbox Platinum Pack" that includes a console, two games, a DVD Playback Kit, and two free months of the Xbox Live online game service for 19,800 yen ($182).

This marks the third price markdown for the Xbox in Japan -- the console debuted in Tokyo on February 22, 2002 for 34,800 yen ($320), but was discounted nearly $100 three months later following slow sales and problems with consoles scratching up game discs. This new price slash, coupled with the value-priced Platinum Pack (which comes with Halo and Project Gotham Racing 2), is part of a move by Microsoft Japan to make their system competitive in the upcoming holiday shopping season.

To help explain their strategy to the local press, Microsoft held an informal press conference yesterday with Yoshihiro Maruyama, the new general manager of the Japanese division's Xbox unit. Maruyama started by explaining that the price cut, while following similar discounts from Sony and Nintendo in Japan, was not a reactionary move: "This discount was in the works for the end-of-year shopping season before SCE's announcement. The timing was on our own terms, and we aren't simply following the leader here." So what brought about the price cut? According to Maruyama, it stemmed from a desire to make the system more accessible: "The Xbox's installed user base is in a very difficult position, but we wanted to give as many users as possible a chance to play online with the Xbox Live service, the console's main weapon."

Anyways The controller still sucks even at S type.

You wanna know why the Japanese hate the XBox? Because they don't play FPS or most other action games. Check the game sale statistics and you will see what I mean. And as I pointed out earlier in my post, the XBox sucks at RPGs and strategy games which is why they are not doing so well in Japan. It's the same issue with the 360.

As far as the controller goes, the S Type actually fits your hands better than the PS2 controller. Granted its still bigger than the PS2 and GameCube controller, but it doesn't really matter because it is very comfortable to handle.

Its still too big and is still uncomfortable on side of your knuckles. But whatever. You can have it. hmmm Last i checked Socom 3 was one of the best action/online games out there. And Metal Gear Solid 3:online edition is also coming out in 9 days. I think you underrate Sony very hard in that department. But i do give the edge to Xbox in FPS games by far. Only problem is I dont play them like crazy and its a secondary genre IMO.

Xbox games are often the most overhyped ever. Jade empire and Fable being primed examples. Not to mention the hilarious hype some people tried to give that bruce lee licensed game. [smilie=angryfire.g: He shoulda came out of his grave and kicked bill gates ass for that one.

I could say the same for RPG's or strategy games. The point is everyone has a different taste in games and thus people might like different systems based on those games.

How about Killzone, the so called "Halo Killer"? Silent Scope? Shadow Hearts? Ever Quest?

Again every console has a few overhyped games. That shouldn't be a deciding factor when it comes to judging a console.

And I never even heard of that Bruce Lee game until you mentioned it. So I don't know who was hyping it.

none of those games were hyped on the level fable and jade empire were. you know this. quitb playing man. only thing that came close was killzone. i admit that game was as overhyped as i expected it to be. but theres also games with no hype kicking ass on ps2. like cold winter. best FPS on the ps2 console.

and we do agree that this shouldnt be the deciding factor. it should be the best games. and i'll take socom 3 over halo 2 anyday. [smilie=2thumbsup.g:

Along with resident evil 4, MGS3 online edition, final fantasy 12, GT4, God of War, Devil may cry 3, silent hill 4, shadow of collosus, omnimusha 4, and tekken 5

over forza, project gotham, fable, jade empire, chronicles of riddick, ninja gaiden black, and far cry instincts.

The difference in 90 percent of the ports are minimal and Sony have better exclusives still from what i've seen and played.

I see you wanna boggle PS2 down to an RPG system. I dont agree with that. Its just that xbox is so bad at rpg's, that they make PS2 look like they patented the market. But ps2 holds its own and does better than xbox in number of quality games not counting the rpg's.

Dude you mentioned that "XBox games are often the most overhyped ever." All I did was point out the fact that both the consoles have those kind of games. I don't understand what Cold Winter has to do with that. There are multiple games on both consoles that are good but get no hype.

That's your personal opinion.

I would take Halo and Halo 2 over any other game on the PS2 except for maybe God of War. Other than that, the XBox catalog is better in my opinion (Just like the PS2 catalog is in your opinion).

I will readily admit that the XBox sucks at RPGs but there is no way in hell that the PS2 is even remotely close to XBox when it comes to FPS or Action games. It does have a few good games but that doesn't mean its suited for those type of games.

There are plenty of action games for the PS2. The Devil May Cry Series, Prince of Persia series, God of War, Onimusha series, MGS series, the 2 games made by SCEI, GTA series, Viewtiful Joe series. Also, KOTOR isn't Xbox exclusive unless you ignore PCs as its a PC port.

Limiting the discussion to exclusives for each console is ridiculous anyway since the majority of titles are multi-platform.

But this whole discussion is well titled "Terrordome" as there really isn't any substance to it since this generation of the industry has been made non-combative from the shear growth of the market and the individual game companies looking to maximize their profit by not signing exclusivity contracts.

2 things are clear. Sony needs to work on their online gaming and MS needs to work on their appeal to Japan.

I'm not the biggest gamer, so go ahead and rip me if I'm wrong here. My college roommates had PS2, and I had Xbox. It seemed like the PS2 was a little bit slower and took more time to load games. It also seemed like it froze up a little bit more.

I really only play sports games and Halo, so I'm not really sure about all the other games.

You mainly play the games xbox does well. I unlike you am not boggled down to those few(FPS are just ok, not #1 on my list of types of games). And for the record most sports games arent that hot for both systems to me anymore.

The ps2 controllers are perfect for me. my bigass thumbs are just fine with the double analog and its my favorite part of the controller.

I like my Xbox way better than the PS2 or Gamecube (played both extensively. My only beef with the Xbox controllers is the black and white buttons at the bottom. They are useless in any fast paced game. The shape of the controller is much better though. It's bigger and fits in your hands better. The stick is in a better location too (on the PS2 the stick is lower and harder to use). Graphically it is a quite a bit better. I would never trade it for a PS2. Like I said, my only complaint is the black and white buttons that are hard to use, but that's minor since they aren't used much in games.

And yes, Xbox games load faster too. The only edge I give them (since I don't play RPG's) is in the speed in which their games come out some times. But if you are just comparing the two systems, Xbox rules.

I owned all three systems, so I'm not biased. Here's how I see them stacking up.

PS2-GREAT library of games (best of the 3 systems by far, 1st party and 3rd party), solid controller for all genres, usable DVD player immediately out of the box, hard drive and network adapter came on the scene late, but were solid, online gaming was OK, decent graphics for the era.

Xbox-Not nearly as many solid games as the PS2 (some ports like GTA came over late), some said the original controller was whack, but I didn't mind it all that much, the black and white buttons did suck majorly though, DVD player but had to buy the remote to make it usable, loved the hard drive, NO MEMORY CARDS! [smilie=2thumbsup.g:, the ability to store music on the hard drive was sick! [smilie=applause.gi: Online play on Xbox Live kicked the PS2's ass, best graphics of the era.

Gamecube-Uhh......the cheapest, worst library of games (did have some excellent ones though like RE 4, Zelda: Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing (sleeper/guilty pleasure thread?), no DVD player, controller not suitable for any type of game other than RPGs and action games, no online play whatsoever, comparable graphics.

So......bottom line, it really depends on what type of gamer you are. If you're a casual gamer, I would recommend the PS2. Hard core gamers should probably roll with an Xbox, and if you're under 10 and poor you should get a Gamecube. [smilie=rofl.gif] I had my PS2 first, and played it the most, but if I were going to pick one system, I'd take the Xbox.

Moodini said all I was going to say.

The Ps2 had a great variety of games and more of them than the Xbox. There was no remote needed for the DVD plaer and the graphics weerent all that bad. I liked the controller size alot more than the XBOX. For some reason, I think Ps2 was a bit slower in loading than Xbox.

XBox had much better graphics, and I saved 30 bucks not buying a memory card. XBox was hella fast in loading but they didn't have a variety of games, but the games that were good are head and shoulders over the good PS2 ones. The controller was hard to adjust to. It was pretty big considering the fact that I have small hands, but once i bought the smaller one, it wasnt all that bad.

I never owned a gamecube so I couldnt tell you

X-Box is for freaks and geeks.

PS2 is for people who want a taste of everything, and loves convenience.

GameCube is for people who were invited to Michael Jackson's house for pie and "Jesus Juice". Basically, it's for 12 and under.

PS2 >>>> X-Box >>>>> a bucket of shit >>>>> GameCube

first off, congrats to Moodini on being the mod for the gaming forum.....perfect fit

I am now on my third PS2. Not because they keep breaking but because I keep trading them in. I will not trade this thing in again until it's PS3 time. I just had the game cube for a couple months....went off on RE4....then realized there was nothing else to play, and then went and got my PS2 back (got absolutely raped by GameStop by the way).

Yeha, they will tend to rip you off on trade-ins.

That's why there's ebay.

And in conjunction with the thread--

GameCube just sucks. Yes, there are a few good games, like people say. But just a few.

Thanks for the dap Wizzle. I'll do my best to keep things clean and active around here. But you forgot to tell the people that you sold your first PS2 for your wife's engagement ring. Now, that's love. Probably a good career move.

Like I said, I'm on my 5th PS2. First one died, took it back to GameStop, got a new one. Got a DVD stuck in the second one, manager at GameStop couldn't get it out, dropped it on the ground, so I got a new one. 3rd PS2 was lost in a house fire. Allstate bought me my 4th PS2 (slim version). A few years back my parents bought my grandparents a PS2 (that's why I'm the gaming forum mod. It's in the blood. LOL), but after a while they stopped playing it, and gave it back to me. PS2 #5 currently sits in my classroom. [smilie=2thumbsup.g:

Personally, I like the XBOX way better than the PS2. I've owned them both, but the vast majority of my time was spent playing the XBOX. Heck, my wife and I just bought our house back in June of last year and the system never left the box until I traded it in for some 360 games and accessories in December.

I still have my OG XBOX though.

The thing I liked about the XBOX was that it was more powerful, the graphics were better, the hard drive was nice, and the overall construction of the unit was very solid. Yeah, it was ugly, but the thing is built like a tank . They did have a problem with old Thompson CD drives that they originally installed, but since they made the switch over to Samsung drives, the device has been even more reliable.

I mainly play sports games and there is a difference in graphics between PS2 and XBOX. Madden looks better on XBOX than it does on the PS2, but Madden is actually designed for the PS2 and ported over to XBOX. However, NFL 2K5 was designed on the XBOX and then ported "down" to the PS2 and it's with that game that you can tell the difference between the systems. NFL 2K5 didn't really run as smooth to me and also you got still photos of the halftime highlights instead of videos, but that was due to lack of hard drive.

Also, they never made Doom 3 for PS2 because it couldn't handle it.

The PS2 is "the peoples system" though and the masses have it. The PS2 has a bigger community than XBOX and more games, but for people like myself who only really play sports games, I think the XBOX is better overall, but more people play PS2.

The XBOX S controller is decent and I don't really have a problem with it, I think it's a very solid controller and can take one helluva beating. The PS2 controller is very cheaply made and is like a toy rather than a tool. I do wish the S controller didn't have the black and white buttons near the bottom, but i got used to them and I think MS did a great job with the 360 controller by turning those into "bumpers" up top.

Who won the war?

I would say Sony, but that's fine. I don't mind MS being in second place in the console war, the system fits my needs perfectly and that's all i really care about.

Here's the thing, I have battle tested the crap out of my controllers. You know, by like, throwing them in frustration and I gotta say that the XBOX controller holds up a helluva lot better.

I"ve also opened both of them up to do some minor work instide of them, and it's like night and day between the two.

Well i cant relate there anymore. I dont throw controllers anymore. I can get fustrated from time to time. But i'd rather laugh than do the old school smash job. Playing Madden online a couple years ago gave me clarity on how unhealthy that shit is. I used to hear people say the craziest shit after an ass whooping. And do the craziest shit too.

Well, sometimes the Madden Gods don't want cooperate and they need to understand that I will not tolerate any more shenanigans! [smilie=angryfire.g:

I've only had one PS2, which I bought December of 04.

It pisses me off that every time I buy a game console a new one is always announced.

I bought a PSX(like five years ago) and a few weeks later they announced the PS2 was coming soon.

Same thing with my slim PS2.

Arch, you gotta get in the game earlier bro. When I first hear about a system launch, I look it up online, find out when it comes out, reserve it or wait in line for 13 hours the day it comes out to get it (PS2). I have been told that I'm a little extreme though. [smilie=cool4.gif]

I have a really poor family so we generally have to wait until the price drops.

It's all good, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Do you ever go to Gamestop and trade in all of your old stuff for credit? That really helps.

I'm an X-Box guy, but my freaking system is on the fritz, constantly saying "your disk may be dirty or damaged" when it clearly isn't. Very annoying.

Most of my friends that are serious gamers are PS-2 people, with the Gamecube people being the poser executives that play freaking Mario Cart like it's the most fun a person could possibly have. Yikes.

Hey, it might not be the funnest of games, but Mario Cart is fucking dope. Dont diss the cart.

Moodini, arent you a school teacher?

If so, do you ever bring in the systems and give the kids a free day?
And you seem to spend a lot of time playing videogames, do the kids ever get their work back graded? [smilie=antlers.gif]

Yup, 3rd grade teacher. I don't need to bring the systems in because I've permanently got a PS2 in my classroom. I've got a system called "behavior bucks". If a kid does something right I'll give them a "behavior buck". For 45 bucks they get to play the PS2 (game of their choice) with me at lunch recess and afternoon recess. (I'm probably making kids fat, but it's all good). We usually play a little bit after recess and the rest of the kids watch and a bit after school. [smilie=2thumbsup.g:

As for grading the papers, uhhh....I can't say I'm the most consistent on that. I usually load up and grade a bunch on Sundays so I can get a big chunk of 360 in each night. [smilie=wink3.gif]
