Wolves: Hoiberg to visit Pistons
Last update: March 07, 2006 – 12:21 AM
JEFF WHEELER, STAR TRIBUNE
Fred Hoiberg, a Wolves special assistant while rehabbing from major heart surgery in June, will head to Detroit tonight to meet with the Pistons about a possible roster spot for what's left of the season and the playoffs. Hoiberg, who played two seasons for the Wolves, had an aneurysm in his aortic root corrected and has worked out with a goal of resuming his NBA career, either this spring or next season.
The Pistons would be a logical destination, given his familiarity with former Wolves coach Flip Saunders' system (and vice versa). They also are expected to have a long playoff run, which could enable Hoiberg to get comfortable and into proper game shape.
"I'm going to meet with Flip and [Pistons president] Joe Dumars," Hoiberg said. "Nothing's for sure. I want to find out if it's a situation that would make sense."
We have no friggin room for the guy. We're carrying a full roster now and even if we made room for him - cut Acker or Cato - he still wouldn't have a play-off roster spot unless Flip played him over Delfino( [smilie=arrgh.jpg] this would be bloody likely).

Yes it would unfortunately. I think its Cato who gets cut if we do take him on.
i really don't like the of throwing in another guy, that Flip will have to figure out how to work into the lineup. he can barely find room for the guys we have now.
some might say that having an able body doesn't hurt......but i have a feeling that Flip will feel bad for Hoiberg and want to play him.
metr0man 03-07-2006, 11:19 AM He'll get Delfino's minutes. Count on it.

Is it a coincidence that we are going for our third Finals appearance in a row? I think not.
I do find it ironic that they only guy that doesn't jack threes on our team wears the number 3.
Delfino has to be in Saunders dog house for some reason or another, or he's really stuck in a sophemore slump. Hoiberg is a three-point assassin, and if our offense is based around the three-point shot, might as well bring in a great three point shooter. I question bringing in Delk though, if Hoiberg is even being remotely considered.
Reguarding Cato being cut, that sould be sort of a shitty thing to do to the vet unless it is deemed that he'll not be able to play anymore this year. Unless of course he wants to head to a team in need of a bigman to earn his next contract sorta deal - of course he canno tbe on anybodies play-off roster.
If We did cut Cato in favor of Hoiberg, it would seem that we'd keep Maxiell off the play-off roster, I mean he's basically useless anyways. We'd carry only four bigs - Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace, Antonio McDyess and Dale Davis - which would be cool if we didn't have a showdown with Shaq and Miami all but certain.
If we are going to sign the Mayor, I'd rather cut Acker and leave Delfino off the play-off roster.
pg-Billups, Hunter, Delk
sg-Hamilton, Hoiberg
sf-Prince, Evans
ce-B.Wallace, Davis, Cato
pf-R.Wallace, McDyess
Black Dynamite 03-07-2006, 11:31 AM Delfino has to be in Saunders dog house for some reason
Flip doesnt like defense. And he just bought a t-shirt to express his feeling towards Delfino

And while we're at it lets start mo evans and make him our "stopper" on defense. Because when we're done he'll be our best defender.
*shudders*

What slump though? He's looked good to me. I haven't looked at his numbers since the break, but he was shooting great before the break and playing arguably the best perimeter D on our team.
I really think this is a non-story. I remember reading not too long ago that Hoiberg was going to call it a season, and push to come back next season. I wonder if Hoiberg is looking towards next season already - but if that is the case, it is bad form considering we're grearing up for a play-off run.
I bet Flip is interested, but Joe is just giving Hoiberg the courtesy of an interview. He'll probably inform him that we don't have any room, barring an injury.
And Flip hearing the prognosis(barring an injury) decides to start Delfino at center the rest of the way out.

I posted this update yesterday.
Pay particular attention to the part about Hoiberg signing in Minny next year.

its a slump to an offensive minded coach. truth is that his defense along with lindseys could become a truly solid staple of a bench that needs some type of spark to make up for its offensive woes. if we cut down other teams scoring and get some offensive breaks off of defense. i think it works out better. but that just my opinion. I like seeing solid defense off the bench myself so take it for what its worth.
Anthony 03-07-2006, 12:28 PM no no way. I hope to god Joe D dosnt do it. Delfino is a talented guy who gets inconsistent minutes (woah, where have I heard that before?)
But really, this just seems like a lame ass move, IMO.

Just trying to make something entertaining out of this thread.
I'll give you the first few words...
"In before somebody says"
Another hint: that "somebody" would most likely be Kilo.

To put an end to your silly games - This thread was entertaining before you decided to quasi-hijack it afterall.
In before somebody/someone says that we should sign Fred Hoiberg to kee him from signing with the Heat.
To which I would respond that with the addition of Derek Anderson, the Heat have little use for Fred Hoiberg, just like we have little use for him with the addition of Tony Delk, but were a bunch of chuckers and Hoiberg is a chucker extraordinaire.
MOLA1 03-07-2006, 01:59 PM Nice job Kilo!!!
Let's kee him from signing with them!!!!
Glenn 03-07-2006, 02:43 PM Kilo wins.
Thanks for playing.
SKelly 03-07-2006, 03:16 PM I don't see how this signing is necessary with Delk on our roster. Hoiberg is a 2 guard. That man can not defend the small forwards of this league (not saying that he can defend the 2). And Delk has played only at the 2 guard so far. And Evans is a 2 guard as well, but he can play the 3. As others have pointed out, we don't have a roster spot for him.
This could be a favor by Flip and the Pistons to Fred sort of like Isiah being interested in Bill Laimbeer over the summer. The interest is not there, but it will get their names floating around for teams that are looking for help at that position.
This would be idiotic. The last thing we need is a guy who just shoots threes and can't play D. Come to think of it... Flip probably loves him then. [smilie=annoyed.gif]

From Todays Freep -
Former Timberwolves shooting guard Fred Hoiberg visited with Saunders on Wednesday. More talks are scheduled today. "Tomorrow, Joe and I are going to sit down and talk to him to see where he's at, where everything's at," Saunders said, referring to team president of basketball operations Joe Dumars. "And then Joe and I will get together tomorrow afternoon." Saunders said he and Dumars would then "give it a good 24 hours" after meeting with Hoiberg again before making a decision on signing him. ... Center Kelvin Cato (ankle) has been practicing the last couple days in some situations. "The biggest thing with him is to continue to do that work with Arnie (Kander), and just try to put himself where he feels he's in game shape," Saunders said. Kander is the Pistons' strength coach.
Are Flip and Dumars not on the same page here??
Anthony 03-09-2006, 10:57 AM I still dont like the idea of Fred. I'd rather see Delfino get more burn.
H1Man 03-10-2006, 12:07 AM Former Timberwolves shooting guard Fred Hoiberg worked out and met with the Pistons Wednesday. He is in town because of his close relationship with Saunders.
Hoiberg has been out of basketball this season, recovering from open-heart surgery. He had a procedure last June to fix his aortic root.
He's exploring an NBA return, and the Pistons were the first team he visited. The meetings will continue today among Hoiberg, Saunders and Joe Dumars .
"We came and talked to him and he did a little shooting," Saunders said. "(Thursday) we're going to sit down and talk to him again and see where things are at. And then Joe and I will get together. He (Hoiberg) goes back and forth. I think there are only two teams he would play for if he was going to play as far as this year. He feels comfortable, as far as physically, that he would be able to do that. He's been cleared and everything else.
"We'll (Saunders and Dumars) will probably give it a good 24 hours or so to see where we're at."
The Pistons do not necessarily have a spot on this season's roster to offer Hoiberg. They would have to release a player. Hoiberg is eligible to sign with a team other than the Timberwolves and be on the playoff roster.

I don't really like where this is going.
I still dont like the idea of Fred. I'd rather see Delfino get more burn.
exactly. The fuck is flip thinking? The fuck is Dumars thinking for letting this go on? did we not learn from LB - Arroyo? damn man..
sometimes man...sometimes......... SOMETIMES! dljfkladjfa
I think Dumars is just giving Hoiberg a look out of professional courtesy, however Flip is trying to get Dumars to sign the guy. I don't think Flip wins this battle of wills unless there is an injury.
Seems that we're going to see what doctors say after a week of Hoiberg working out with the Pistons. I'm wondering if Detroit is trying to wait as late as possible to eventually cut Alex Acker, because the later they wait, the less chance the kid gets picked up on a new team sorta deal. I wonder if the league will step in soon and have Hoiberg stop working out with the Pistons, espeically if we're just not signing him to protect ourselves from losing Acker.
Then again, Hoiberg would still make 13 play-off roster players - meaning one of Hoiberg, Evans, Delfino, Delk or Cato would have to be left off...
Joe isn't going to let this happen.
I think Dumars is just giving Hoiberg a look out of professional courtesy, however Flip is trying to get Dumars to sign the guy. I don't think Flip wins this battle of wills unless there is an injury.
i hope you're 100% correct. maybe JoeD is letting Hoiberg work out there because he knows that Kander is a miracle worker and he can help out Hoiberg.
Cross 03-14-2006, 10:02 AM Detroit News - Chris McCosky of The Detroit News doesn't believe the Pistons will sign Fred Hoiberg?
"I don't think they ever intended to -- not this season. They brought him in as a favor to Flip Saunders, and they might try to sign him this summer. But as good a role player as Hoiberg has been, and as comfortable as he may be with Saunders' system, it would be a risk bringing him in now."
Not this season...
Black Dynamite 03-14-2006, 10:08 AM I don't think Flip wins this battle of wills unless there is an injury.
.
then i see delfino getting injured by a paid hitman for Flip nancy kerrigen style to get hoiberg in. he knows that Flip has paid every big man in the league to take him out. thus he doesnt drive as much as he should. [smilie=arrgh.jpg]

Hoilberg joins Suns workout
By Jerry Brown, Tribune
March 16, 2006
The Suns brought veteran guard Fred Hoiberg in for a physical and workout Thursday.
If all checks out Hoiberg will take the roster spot available when forward Dijon Thompson went on injured reserve after having microfracture surgery on his right knee Monday. The move would give the Suns another backup at the shooting guard spot.
Hoiberg has played parts of 10 NBA seasons with Indiana, Chicago and Minnesota. He shot a career-high 48.3 percent from 3-point range last season when he averaged 5.9 points for the Timberwolves.
He had open heart surgery last season and if he plays again he would be the first NBA player ever to play with a pacemaker.
Hoiberg only found out he would require the surgery last season after having an echocardiogram while attempting to get a life insurance policy. During his sophomore year at Iowa State, he found out he had a bicuspid aortic valve, but the problem was not considered life-threatening at the time.
He continued to play, but was monitored by the school with echocardiograms. He then had the test at the 1995 pre-draft camp, and was monitored with echocardiograms by his first two NBA teams, the Pacers and the Bulls. Before signing with the Timberwolves in 2003, Hoiberg never got an echocardiogram himself, and Minnesota never gave him one.
He's a good fit in PHX. Besides I won't have to turn the game off every time he is on the floor. I don't want to see anybody drop dead and die in front of me.
Why risk it?
H1Man 03-18-2006, 12:21 PM Hoiberg decides not to sign
Concerns about heart too great
Fred Hoiberg left Phoenix on Friday and won't be back for a while.
Hoiberg visited with the Suns but has decided for now that any NBA comeback this season may not be the right move after consulting with various cardiologists. Hoiberg, 33, would have been the first NBA player to play with a pacemaker, installed in June after an aneurysm was discovered. He also had family considerations.
Hoiberg, last season's league three-point shooting leader, would have provided insurance at the wing position.

Hoiberg update: Wolves special assistant Fred Hoiberg said he doesn't want to get his hopes up, but he's interested in the head coaching job at his alma mater, Iowa State. Hoiberg has decided he won't pursue returning to the NBA this season. Hoiberg has talked with a couple of influential Iowa State boosters who are involved in the process, though he hasn't talked with athletics director Jamie Pollard.
Hoiberg, who played the previous two seasons with the Wolves, worked out with the Detroit Pistons and the Phoenix Suns recently while Minnesota was on a six-game road trip. Hoiberg was waived last summer after he had aortic root surgery in June and has a pacemaker.
"I had great meetings with both teams," Hoiberg said. "I had workouts that went very well with both teams. The big thing is meeting with doctors. I met with cardiologists, and there's still some unknowns. I just want to make sure that everything's all right if I do come back and play."
Hoiberg said he believes he could make an impact with a team if he returned this season. He would become the first player in the NBA with a pacemaker.
"Nobody's ever played with my condition right now, and that's the problem we're facing," Hoiberg said. "You can't quantify the risk because nobody's ever done it."

Source: Iowa State hires N. Iowa coach McDermott
By Andy Katz
ESPN.com
Iowa State will announce Northern Iowa's Greg McDermott as its next men's basketball coach at a news conference later today, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com Tuesday morning.
Greg McDermott took Northern Iowa to three NCAA Tournaments.
McDermott replaces Wayne Morgan, who was abruptly fired Thursday after three seasons.
McDermott told Northern Iowa athletic director Rick Hartzell late Monday night. A team meeting was scheduled for noon Tuesday to let the players know of McDermott's decision. McDermott led Northern Iowa to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament, losing to Georgetown in the first round last week in Dayton.
McDermott interviewed with Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard on Sunday in Iowa City. McDermott also interviewed with Kansas State on Monday in Chicago. A source told ESPN.com that McDermott was offered both jobs.
Meanwhile, a source said Northern Iowa is expected to promote assistant Ben Jacobson to replace McDermott. That announcement could come as early as Wednesday morning.
