Indiana (27-23) at Detroit (43-9)

Game Info: 8:00 pm EST Thu Feb 23, 2006
TV: TNT

The first meeting of the season between the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons at The Palace of Auburn Hills could not possibly be as memorable, or infamous, as the first one last season.

Even though this game won't end up marking Ron Artest's return to Detroit, there still should be plenty of intrigue when the Pacers visit the Pistons.

The first matchup between the teams during the 2004-05 season had one of the worst brawls in U.S. sports history, with Artest going into the stands at The Palace to attack a Pistons fan. While Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson received long suspensions for their role in the incident, Artest was suspended for the entire season and the playoffs.

Artest ended up asking for a trade this season and was deactivated by the Pacers for a while before being dealt to Sacramento on Jan. 25.

Indiana's second game in Detroit last season included a phony bomb threat that delayed the start of the game, though the three meetings at The Palace during the teams' second-round playoff series went off without incident.

The Pistons needed seven games to win that series en route to the NBA Finals, but failed to win in Indianapolis on Feb. 4 in the only meeting this season. Jackson shook off a recent injury that sent him to the hospital to score 20 points and grab seven rebounds as the Pacers won 93-85.

"Beating a team like Detroit is good," Jackson said. "It's showing that we're starting to get some identity and showing that we can win tough games and we can play with the best."

Indiana certainly has proven that after struggling for much of the season. The victory over the Pistons is part of a stretch during which the Pacers have won six of seven, climbing to fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

The loss to the Pacers is one of four Detroit has suffered in its last 10 games after a 37-5 start to the season.

The Pistons go into this matchup having won 10 in a row at home, and have lost just twice at The Palace all season.

Detroit was not overly impressive in its first game following the All-Star break, but beat Atlanta 97-87 on Tuesday.

The Pistons had only a two-point halftime lead at home against one of the league's worst teams, but took control in the third quarter as Richard Hamilton scored 12 of his 24 points. Chauncey Billups hit his second buzzer-beating jumper of the game to put Detroit up 74-63.

"It took us a while, but we got it going," said Billups, who had 19 points and 15 assists. "It's tough when you haven't played in a week."

Besides Hamilton and Billups, Detroit's other two All-Stars had solid games. Rasheed Wallace had 21 points and 12 rebounds while Ben Wallace added nine points, 17 rebounds, six blocks and five steals.

The Pacers began the second half of the season with a 97-75 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Tuesday. It was the last of seven consecutive home games for Indiana, which plays eight of its next 10 games on the road.

The Pacers have held their last two opponents to an average of 76 points and a combined 35.5 percent from the field while outrebounding them 101-78. They have kept the opposition below 40 percent from the floor in five of the last seven games.

"We're playing very good ball right now," Pacers guard Anthony Johnson said. "Our defense, especially rebounding, has been carrying us."

Peja Stojakovic has done a solid job for Indiana since being acquired for Artest, averaging 18.6 points and 7.3 rebounds in eight games with the Pacers.

Indiana is looking to join Utah as the only teams to beat Detroit twice this season.

I think this could be a statement game as the Pistons have been hearing Jermaine O'Neals verbal diarrhea about the Pacers wanting the eighth seed and Detroit in the first round because they match up well against us.

Prick is supposed to be on Stoney & Wojo in a while, I wonder if we'll be able to hear him wipe his nose on his sleeve over the air?

this is a bitch-slapping-statement-game if i ever heard of one. the pistons need to lay the smack down tonight and send Germ ONeal back to Indytucky with his tail between his legs.

I get the feeling its going to be close. Hopefully, Flip shows some trust in Delfino. I dont know if they have anyone who can check him

Granger on the boards killed us last time. We win the rebounding war we win with a blow out. We dont and they have a chance. Delfino will shut down granger and stephen jackson. only to be punished for missing two shots. Evans plays the rest of the year and Delfino is inactive until his contract is done..

If we get up big, I vant to see Acker play.

I hate losing to these fucks, and I'm already pissed to begin with.

Delfino better play 20+ minutes (in other words, twice as many as Evans) including some time at the point.

I'm not sure why, but this game doesn't do much for me. Getting back at Atlanta for beating us earlier in the season meant more to me than this game. In my mind, at least this season, this rivalry has faded quite a bit. Any game that isn't the Knicks, Spurs, Cavs or Mavs is just a roadbump right now the way I see it. This team (though much thinner in the bench now, thanks Mr. D as in Dickhead) is just so much better than anyone else.

Chances are I'm not even going to watch this game after I saw nothing in the way of trades.

Matt
02-23-2006, 05:31 PM
from this point on, i want to see Flip start making some moves with the lineup. that's the only way i can feel better about us not making any moves before the trade deadline.

tonight, let's see Delfino play 18-20 minutes. let's see Acker get in for at least a few minutes. hell, bring in Hunter to get into game shape. just play the damn bench and stop riding out the starters.

Chances are I'm not even going to watch this game after I saw nothing in the way of trades.

I do not want to watch the game tonight either.

Of course I will. But I'm watching it at a bar (I hope Davidson doesn't own a part of BW3's) and I'm taking notes of what products are advertised at the Palace and during the breaks and I will never buy those things again.

Diddy... are you hitting up the .50 boneless tonight? Me and my friends used to do that on Thursdays at lunch.

I'm just feeling very sour about the Pistons. I love the players and Joe Dumars but I don't want to support smithers and mr burns (Tom Wilson and the old fart).

Sheed - 43 minutes
Ben - 43 minutes

garbage time points at the end. the game was over with like 5 minutes left in the 4th. the pistons took their foot off the pedal...Acker and Maxiell got some PT. it was a blowout, regardless of what the score said.

I guess that's what we wanted right?

I was going to bitch about getting absolutely owned on the glass, however I noticed we hae ELEVEN blocks, which probably means we were trying to block everything and that put us out of place for rebounds.

Ben was in a defensive zone. he was fly everywhere for blocks. he had a block on Granger that had better be on Sportscenter.

Yeah, everyone was challenging everything. Indy got very few "free" shots.

BTW, I thought flip did a better job with the rotation. IMO, as long as the starters get rest, and gives us atleast some production, we'll be fine. I think we had 12 points off the bench, but they played great D, and gave some energy. I liked what I saw.

And about 2 possessions later, he owned Pollard. Ben was a man on a mission tonight.

Are we making too much of a deal out of the minutes?? I mean what is 3-4 minutes going to make really, these are finely tuned athletes afterall. Anything under 38 minutes and no starters in when the game is decided and I think I'll be happy.

How much burn did the rooks get, Yahoo is showing Max with zero minutes and Alex with one whole minute(though they only have 225 out of the 240 minutes accounted for)??

Indiana must have went off in garbage minutes!!

well, if tonight's any indication, Ben was unreal with fresh legs. who knows if it was because he wasn't tired out or not, he only played 28 minutes. but his production was crazy. he looked possessed out there, leaping for every jumpshot, trying to block it.

Yeah, they found a few 3's off of some turnovers at the end

And what you're talking about with the minutes pretty much happened tonight. Although, I think prince played 40. Not sure.

Flip was interviewed on one of the local radio stations and mentioned that Ben Wallace is best when he plays a lot of minutes(mentioned upwards of 38 [smilie=duh.gif] ). I really believe Dale Davis could give us basically what Ben gives us off the bench( at least 85%). Like Ben he's a very solid interior presence, can rebound and block shots like a madman and is tough as nails. I'd love to see Ben limited to 35 minutes MAXIMUM a game, give DD ten a game and give the remainder to Sheed/Dice.

Ben Wallace 34|Dale Davis 10
Rasheed Wallace 32|Antonio McDyess 20

My game notes:

Arroyo Sucks. Arroyo >>>>>> Lindsey.

The bench just took a huge step back. Did we score a single point in the halfcourt with Lindsey in the game? It just turned into a one-on-one fest for Rip (which means an ass load of TOs).

im not sure. lindsey looked ok to me.

i've never had a problem with lindsey being #1 backup pg (thought since game 1 he should). i have a problem with him being the only backup pg.

Props to Flip for playing delfino a good chunk of the game. he's still in a cold spell on his jump shot. But his defense was major for us. He exposed Fred Jones iffy ball handling skillz on a couple of ocasions.

Missed this game. Ran out of memory on my DVR so it didn't record it :(

Box score looks good:

C. Billups 36:20
R. Hamilton 35:25
R. Wallace 36:30
T. Prince 39:50
B. Wallace 32:15
A. McDyess 20:32
C. Delfino 18:33
L. Hunter 10:35
M. Evans 04:22
D. Davis 03:28

No one over 40, Delfino getting the bulk of Evans' minutes, and Dale getting early rust off.

I'm glad we won, but this was exactly what a lot of us feared would happen.

Lindsey was garbage. He was getting repeatedly beaten by Anthony fucking Johnson. If you can't at least get a little D out of Lindsey, then he's no good at all. Sure, I like the little knockaway that he gets from time to time, and the press is fun to watch, but did you see how fast our leads disappeared EVERY TIME BILLUPS LEFT THE FLOOR??

I haven't made my way over to 82games.com yet, but I can't wait to see the +/- numbers when Chauncey was out of the game.

Ben was a pure stud, Dice was in the zone, Sheed was chucking and they were falling. That part was fun to watch at least, but I see last year all over again, this bench is going to be the death of us.

Wow Glenn I haven't seen you this amp to hate on a guy since your joey harrington episode. It his second game in like 9 months with no preseason time. You're starting the "hang hunter" mob a lil' early dont you think? I thought his defense at times was solid. Yess it was inconsistent too sometimes. but once again i dont expect "Shut 'em down hunter" after 2 games. Overall his defense was cool with me.

I agree with Gutz

The man said it best. No training camp, no preseason, no regular season, not in shape, old and needs a while to get into shape - - - - and still took at least two charges that were called blocking fouls.

Give Hunter another 10-15 games (or more if he continues to play such limited minutes). His offense won't change, but his defense will come around. He's got to get his legs under him.

Hunter gets a pass from me until closer to playoff time...I think it was good for him to get (what seemed like) a lot of minutes.

I thought the Pistons looked a bit off at points but maybe it was because Flip was changing the lineup? They lacked offensive rhythm unless Sheed was in, the good thing about Arroyo was he seemed to make Dice better. So that's a little worrisome.

I thought Delfino played pretty good...good hustle, defense, a little offense. And how about that HORRIBLE call against him where he got run over...I hope somebody points out to the ref how bad that call was.

I like Lindsey. He seems like a nice guy (especially if you ask Doug Collins), and he does have a role on this team.

Unfortunately, his role should not be #2 PG. He's a specialty player, a gimmick. He's a change of pace, defensive pest.

He can't shoot, he can't finish, he can't set up others.

I'm willing to bet that he's missed more layups in his career than any other active player.

You're lying, you hate his guts if thats your take. My only worry is his age at this point. Outside of that, I think you're overreacting.

Nevertheless its good to vent your feelings

LMAO, I'm lying? Why would I lie? If I didn't like him, I'd say so. (see Milicic, Darko and Okur, Mehmet...wait am I a xenophobe?)

What part of that last post do you disagree with? (besides the fact that you are satisfied with him being our #2 PG)

Hunter looked shakey, but the guy has NEVER played in this sytem in a game (the few seconds he got prior to the all star break doesn't count). I have faith he'll at least find the right guy with more PT in the system. He won't be much for points, but I give him a free pass, for now.

Delfino was pretty good again. Glad to see Flip went with him more.

This was a blowout really. Jaskevihidghdhlgh hit a couple shots down the stretch and the Pistons played lazy with the 20 point lead, otherwise this would have been a big margain of victory. They took the foot off the gas and coasted the last 4 minutes.

Flip would have been better off putting in the scrubs a little earlier and they might have played a little harder. Doesn't matter, the game was in hand.

Great performance by our bigs. We were up 20, even with Tay, Billups and RIP all shooting bad.

If defense is "what he does", how exactly does he get beating by Anthony Johnson? Mediocre defenders should be able to stop Sir Sludge, good defenders should completely shut him down and force turnovers. Lindsey did nothing of the sort. Dare I say, for the first time in my life, pwn3d? (by the way, now that I've said that once, is there ever any turning back?)

I know there is no reason to believe anything Flip says about rotations but if (amazingly) the Pistons' general plan this season has been to drive hard the first half and then get the bench situated the 2nd half as he's been quoted as saying (yeah, its easy to see that as an excuse for never playing the bench in the 1st half), then I think patience is called for as to seeing how things shake out.

IMO there are 4 guys off the bench that matter, Dice, Hunter, Delfino, Davis. If those guys get to playable states then each of their limitations can be overcome with rotations.

Jethro34
02-24-2006, 09:49 AM
Might as well throw Evans in there. At least that gives us a full lineup off the bench. It would still be nice to see Mad Max every now and then. Something about him just reminds me of a smaller Zach Randolph.

It's a sad fact of life that Anthony Johnson abuses Pistons back up PGs. In the last Pistons/Pacers match-up AJ abused Arroyo like a rented mule so much so the Pacers TV analysts made fun of Carlos.

Hunter took too many chances defensively looking to pop the ball away instead of playing straight up D. I think this will be discussed and you'll see improvement the next time he takes the floor.

He'll never be anything offensively (Was Arroyo anything offensively either?) but I did like the fact that Lindsey at least tried to push the ball up the floor on back-2-back occasions something Arroyo rarely did. And honestly, not having Hunter as a playmaker could actually benefit this team as long as delfino continues to play and gets aggressive.

In Hunter's defense, he got robbed on one steal call. Yes, his body might have touched the ball handlers (I think it might have been Jones at the time, but maybe AJ), but he had a clean steal IMO.

Wow I nominate Jermaine Oneal for salty haterade Whiner of the year.

“I respect the Pistons, I respect what they’ve got going on over there, but I feel good about my team. I feel good about my team against anyone, with a healthy team. You can say what you want to say about this game, we had enough players to win - there are no excuses. I feel like when we get myself back, when we get Austin Croshere back, when we get Jamaal Tinsley back, we’re going to be right there. Take any team and take two stars out of their lineup and tell me what you get. Take Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey Billups and then tell me what you’ve got. That’s just the way it is. Those are the facts.”

Indiana fans might not admit this, but there is a certain belief that the Pacers play better without Jermaine O'Neal in the line-up. Flip actually said as much when asked to comment on JON's hating, and said that the Pacers are much less predictable when Jermaine isn't in the line-up.

That and Tinsley isn't in the league of Billups.

If you look back to the last Indy OGT I think I mentioned that as well.

They seem to be a lot more diversified/efficient without forcing things to O'Neal.

I wonder where the Jerm for Bosh trade talks initiated?

Bosh IS T-Dot now. I dont think he gets traded for anyone. He even got them to clear cap space and get ready to try and resign Mike James at his request.

Anyway Bosh>JO these days something severe. JO isnt what he used to be.
