The city is looking to close the Zoo permanently because they are broke (When aren't they broke? They never closed the Zoo before) but they came up with a plan to shed cost for the Zoo by having the Zoo's fund-raising arm pick-up the day to day running cost (5 mill). The only problem now is that the city council isn't allowing the deal to go through (they are getting their mandatory face time in the public eye). Even if they sign off on it now the Zoo might still close because a 4 million dollar injection to the city by the state was somehow linked to getting the deal done by midnight Sunday (I believe).

I'm a Zoo member. I take my daughter constantly when its warm outside. She loves it and my wife and I love it. I've heard a little about Oakland County wanting to take it over if Detroit is going to let it close (I don't know what Gutz is refering to when he says they don't care). As long as it stays open and its finances aren't crippled (or diminished in a large way) I'm happy.

Why can't those dumbasses look at a map and see that the Zoo is in Huntington Woods, not Royal Oak. Instead they list their address as Royal Oak (even on the Zoo website), even though it's not in Royal Oak. So, when you click the map link on their site, Yahoo can't find the address because it's not in the right fucking city.

Sorry Cliffy but you are getting played by your own hypocrisy. Ease back, take a deep breath, and realize you're playing the same race card you opened this thread up dissing.

The council is being Shitty(i warned you that they can be, funny that everyone only bitches when they close the zoo down). They are also being belligerent and probally taking a political shot at the suburbs. You can go back to things like the suburbs trying to run the water supply and realize theres silly grudges on both sides politically.

You're right, they dontv wanna work things out. But the city and the suburbs very rarely ever work things out.

Ask Amtrak. Or about 50 other agencies with income potential. Ask why public schools are auctioning off their food services. Government has too many people to appease to make profit.

Their is no doubt that the Zoo can make money. They charge an arm and a leg to get in + parking. The problem is that everyone that works for the zoo qualifies for a city employee and they get big money for doing stupid jobs like selling hot dogs. I had a friend back in high school work for the zoo and he was making $10 hour and this wasn't recently.

On a serious note: I do agree that charging more money for the Zoo visits might help. But I think they should make it more entertaining. It was the lamest field trip you could get in middle school. Needs some serious rebuffing.

Owning a membership for the thing should be enough, (to count as "doing something") and it would if jackasses downtown could get their shit together.

Instead of the crappy food they have there they should sell space to Taco Bell, KFC, Burger King or even Red Lobster. Charge them rent to open shop there. Everyone wins, The city makes money off the rent, saves money on the budget and visitors get better food.

Truth is that they could do an endless ammount of things to increase revenue and cut down budget. They just don't care.


However I doubt they'd shut down the zoo, I don't think anyone is really thinking of doing that. They're just threatening it. I think the city of Detroit wants the suburbs to at least jump in and help more with the cost of the zoo, and rightfully so. The burbs get more use out of the zoo then the city and the zoo is in the burbs so it's only right they pay for it. As it stands the only thing that's really detroit about the detroit zoo is the name on the watertower and the tax money that pays for it.

After weeks of political wrangling, negotiations and shouting matches between elected officials and metro area residents, the Detroit City Council agreed this afternoon to transfer daily operations of the Detroit Zoo to the non-profit Detroit Zoological Society.

The council approved the transfer by a 6-3 vote. Under the transfer agreement, the city will retain ownership of the zoo and all its assets. The zoological society will essentially be the zoo management.
