The Detroit Pistons' stretch of five of six games on the road ended in heartbreaking fashion in Miami on Sunday. The Pistons look to put the loss behind them -- and maybe exact some revenge -- when they open a three-game homestand against the surging New Jersey Nets.

Late in the fourth quarter Sunday, Detroit appeared to be on track for a third straight victory to close out the six-game stretch at 4-2. That was before the Heat's Dwyane Wade made the Pistons' vaunted defense appear helpless, scoring the Heat's last 17 points, including the game-winner on a 16-footer with 2.3 seconds left to give Miami a 100-98 victory.

Detroit had led 90-83 with 4 1/2 minutes left.

"Dwyane took the game over," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said. "He got a lot of shots up, and we couldn't get any help over."

Chauncey Billups had 29 points and 10 assists for the Pistons, who despite losing three of their past five still have the NBA's best record at 41-9.

After Wade's basket with 55 seconds left made the score 98-all, Detroit missed twice, and the Heat regained possession with 25 seconds to go.

"We don't usually lose games like that," Billups said. "We gave that game away. We had it. It was under control. You got to give them credit."

Now the Pistons return to The Palace, where they have the league's best home record at 22-2. Detroit hasn't lost in front of its home fans since falling in overtime to Utah on Jan. 7 -- its last defeat before going on an 11-game winning streak that was snapped by New Jersey in a 91-84 victory at the Meadowlands on Jan. 31.

The Nets will be looking to increase their 3 1/2 -game lead in the Atlantic Division after going 4-1 on their homestand. New Jersey's only loss during the stretch came against Western Conference-leading San Antonio on Friday, but the Nets rebounded with a 94-79 rout of Milwaukee on Sunday.

Vince Carter scored a team-high 24 points to lead New Jersey, which had only an estimated 5,000 fans on hand at Continental Airlines Arena due to the snowstorm that hit the East Coast over the weekend.

Clifford Robinson, the NBA's oldest active player at 39, scored 16 points for the Nets.

"It was a weird game," Carter said. "It was really slow and we all had to work our way into it. There wasn't a lot of energy out there. I was tired even before the game. But Cliff was big with his energy. He was the difference. We played OK. He made the difference."

The reserves contributed 45 points for the Nets, who scored 30 points off of Milwaukee turnovers and had 32 assists on 36 field goals.

Although the Nets had a successful homestand, they'll be trying to break a six-game road losing streak as they open a stretch of three straight away from East Rutherford. Detroit should prove to be a tough place to end that slide, as New Jersey has dropped seven of its last nine games there.

It's time though.

3 games at home and the ASW in the middle?

I hope Flip plays our 4 AS only 15 minutes each in the ASG so they can rest.

Play the "starters" the majority of minutes.

The excuse?

"Fans voted them in and who am I to disagree?"

Take a look at the bigs on the East roster. Ben & Sheed are going to play plenty. Flip will probably try to avoid the appearance that he is riding Shaq into the ground.

As for this game, I hate the fucking Nets and I want retribution for the last game.

Hopefully all of you have a great woman like I do and will be watching this basketball game on Valentine's night.

EDIT: Also, I heard a rumor that we are unleashing the alpacas tonight. [smilie=alpaca.gif]

Anybody got that pic with the alpaca chomping on that kid's (err...Kidd's) head? That is what this is going to look like, only the alpacas are going to eat Jefferson's small ears first as an appetizer.

Defino had a whopping two points in 18 minutes. Sure I enjoyed his defense, but he is so much more than Pitbull#2.

Arroyo is going to ask for a trade sooner than later. He has been playing less than 10 minutes a game the last five without Hunter taking minutes, and now with Hunter back, his minutes could drop even more.

Darko looks like he did the haircut himself. Why did he shoot a three pointer?? Was the shotclock about to expire sorta deal??

From what i've heard Delfino provided great energy when RIP went out in the 3rd, so if thats true, piss on the points. But I agree, he needs to drive to the hole much much more

And as for Darko. The Clock wasnt running down. He just actually thinks he has that talent. Which he dosnt.

Delfino is a flat out beast. The was a Ben Wallace-like performance. Dominate the game without scoring. The team D was crazy good in that 3rd quarter. Only gave up 11 points. Reminded me of one of those lock-down quarters the 03-04 defense used to put up.

Im glad Delfino got a chance to show off his D skills tonight. Delfino is by far my favorite player on this team...and has been ever since he signed with the team.

You look at the box score and you would think he played like crap. But if you saw the game, you cant deny the impact he had on the game. There was a span of 3 straight possesions when he made VC look like an idiot. (The VC got an alley oop jam...but hey you cant stop em all the time)

Great game for the guy though, and it seems like more and more of you on this board are starting to jump on board for this guy.

If you check the overhead replay you'll see that Jason Collins set a moving screen on Carlos and basically held him off. Should have been an offensive foul, but some of those little things are hard for a ref to spot in realtime.

Yeah, they even showed that on the Palace Vision. Just a gamble that a veteran like Kidd able to see and exploit.

RJ shouldn't fear the Pistons because the Pistons have no one who can stop him. Luckly for us he takes a back seat to VC and Delfino came up big.

My only comment on this game that hasn't already been said is about the poor offensive performance of our back-up PGs. I realize Lindsay just got back but he never could run an offense (strickly speaking about his second stint in Detroit). His first stat of the game was a turnover he tossed right to the Nets. However like last year, he pressured from endline to endline and the other non-bigs feed off that and started challenging everything a little more. They didn't produce in the half-court with Lindsay in but they got enough full court opportunities and stops to hold on to the lead (they might of increased it a bit, I didn't count).

When Arroyo was in, the first play was a classic baseline screen and curl and Arroyo chose not to pass it. Timeout Flip. Arroyo passed off immediately after getting the ball over half court the rest of the game. He barely touched the ball after that timeout.

Damn - I enjoy reading it.

Oh well, for future reference could you guys save it all and post it after the game is done?

An 18 page thread on the Darko and a 5 page game thread?

WTF?

i've been good about saving the entire chat script to a file, but i just didn't do it last night for some reason.

anyways, i vow to do a better job next time.

They called an offensive foul on Rip. He argued the call and got called for a T.

Where was the foul and why did it go out to half court for a jump ball?

Because while they called Rip for an offensive foul, they still called the original foul on the defensive player (I can't remember who that was). It was a double foul (which are almost always BS) so they jumped it at half court, and Rip got a T for calling the refs out.

It was a 6 point swing (Rip's made shot and1, then the Nets make the T and won the tap and converted) that took the Pistons from up double digits to within 4.

Thanks, Fool. It must have been a lowering the shoulder foul on Rip then, because no one was even in position. That could possibly be the worst call I have witnessed this season. It was so loud with boos in the Palace that no one could understand what was going on. Then the very next play, Ben got called for jumping after the ball. It's a good thing we ended up blowing them out, because if not there would have been some very angry fans this morning (along with conspiracy theorists).

i just saw Delfino's block on Vince (after getting beat off the dribble) and then the fast break, where he fed Dice for the dunk.

Delfino needs to play more, bottom line.

btw, Tay didn't have a great game, but he really was trying to attack the rim often. he missed several short bunnies. he finished with 13 and 7 rebs and shot 6 FT's, after going 2 games without shooting 1 FT.

btw, Delfino forced 3 turnovers and had a blocked shot during his time in.

maybe i'm going out on a limb here....but does anyone else think Delfino could start for many teams in the NBA right now? i know the NBA is SG/SF heavy, but Delfino just looks like he's got starter level talent.

Did you get to see Kenny Rogers when you watched the replay? He was right behind Flip most of the game.

The thing that suprises me the most about Delfino is his feel for the game. This is essentially his rookie season although his play reflects that of a vet.

exactly.....when he's out there, he's not running around like a chicken w/ it's proverbial head cut off. he's got his head up and is directing the flow of traffic.

i'm going out on a limb here, but if Delfino can somehow gain the trust of Flip and get about 20 minutes a game, while Tay continues to be unimpressive......i think people might be calling out Tay to be benched in favor of Delfino [smilie=arrgh.jpg]
