Sosa would rather retire than 'beg for a spot'

Sammy Sosa is seriously considering retiring from baseball instead of accepting an offer from the Washington Nationals, a source close to the player told ESPNdeportes.com.

Sosa has not made a decision regarding the contract offer from Washington, which is a non-guaranteed, one-year pact for $500,000.

"Sammy doesn't think of himself as someone who has to beg for a spot on a big league roster," said the source.

Washington's offer is the only one the Dominican slugger and potential Hall of Famer has received this winter.

With 588 career home runs, Sosa is the all-time leader among Latin American players. He had three years of 60 or more home runs between 1998 and 2001 as a Cub, becoming enormously popular in Chicago and throughout baseball.

However, injuries and some bad publicity, including the discovery of a corked bat in 2003, have affected his legacy and market value.

"Sammy wants to get to 600 home runs, but he's not willing to humiliate himself to keep playing. He feels that the lack of interest in his services this winter constitutes a humiliation," added the source.

Although the team has not set a deadline for a decision by Sosa, the Nationals would like to have the situation resolved before pitchers and catchers report to spring training on February 18. Washington originally only offered a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training.

Sosa is taking his time to mull the decision, consulting with family and friends. Some have encouraged him to continue playing, while others have suggested he leave baseball.

Sosa, 37, was released by the Orioles after a disappointing 2005, when he hit .221 with 14 home runs and 45 RBI in 102 games.

The "Caribbean Bambino" was affected by various injuries last year, when he made $17 millon in the last season of a five-year deal he signed with Chicago in 2002. Baltimore declined a $18 million option for 2006.

The Nationals see Sosa as an insurance policy entering spring training, in case Jose Guillen's shoulder does not heal as quickly as they would like, and also with Alfonso Soriano's apparent refusal to switch from the infield to the outfield.

Considering it was he and McGwire who "saved" baseball with their home run quest, I think MLB should force the Nationals to guarantee a starter spot, and $20 million a season in American currency.

Or, considering how much of a galactic prick he's become (or always have been, saved for years by the Cubs PR staff), just cut him now and get it over with.

Let him be the "Caribbean Bob Feller". [smilie=antlers.gif]

Sosa turns down Nationals' offer

Sammy Sosa has turned down an offer to sign with the Washington Nationals.

The Nationals had offered Sosa a non-guaranteed contract that would have included performance bonus opportunities. Team spokesman John Dever said Wednesday that Sosa had rejected the deal.

Washington originally offered Sosa a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, then proposed a major league deal.

Sosa ranks fifth on the career home run list with 588, but he batted only .221 with 14 homers and 45 RBIs last year in his only season with the Baltimore Orioles.

I'm surprised that the Yankees haven't offered him a million or two to DH for them, ala Ruben Sierra.

Not done yet: Sosa says he'd return for right offer

Sammy Sosa is not retired and could hit some more home runs in the major leagues.

At least, that is what he said Wednesday.

"I'm not retired. I'm young and happy," said the Dominican to a radio station in Santo Domingo.

"I wanted a break, but I'm getting ready to come back for the right offer," said Sosa.

Sosa's career was put on hold when he rejected the only offer he received during the winter recess. Even though he did not announce his offical retirement, he did not suggest he was going to continue playing either.

In February, Sosa rejected a non-guaranteed contract with performance bonuses from the Washington Nationals.

Washington originally offered a minor league contract to Sosa and a spring training invitation before offering him a major league deal.

Sosa said he has spent these last months resting with his family, traveling around the world and fixing some personal business. He also took some time off to buy his own plane.

"I have rested physically and mentally. I'm completely recovered after so much time playing ball," he said.

Sosa is fifth in home runs on the all-time-list, with 588, but only batted .221, with 14 homers and 45 RBI for the Baltimore Orioles in 2005, limited by injuries to only 102 games.

In 1998, he and Mark McGwire captured the world's attention with an epic home run battle.

Even though McGwire won 70-66, both sluggers broke the record of 61 owned by Roger Maris since 1961 and Sosa earned the NL MVP award.

Sosa also hit more than 60 home runs in two other seasons, becoming the only player in history to do it three times.

Between 1995 and 2003, Sosa hit more than 35 home runs and 100 RBI in nine consecutive seasons. He has a career average of .274 and 1,575 RBI.

He recently traveled with the Dominican Republic president, Leonel Fernandez, on an official tour to the United States, Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

During the trip, Sosa told several reporters in Asia that he was seriously planning to play baseball again next year.

"Many people, including kids, asked me why I wasn't playing anymore during the trip. That's why I'm not going to retire yet," said Sosa.

That's not even newsworthy lol.

I'm waiting for Pujols, seriously. It's not because I'm a Cubs fan and hate him, it's just obvious. On a Cubs fan note, I didn't really like Sammy when he was goin yard for the Cubs on a daily basis... so now I just laugh.

Also, I wish the media would stop making a big deal about past positive steroid tests. At this point, I'm assuming every player from 1989 - 2005 was on steroids. So come to me with breaking news when a player wasn't on steroids in that era.

Ed Sprague was not on Steroids.*
