WASHINGTON - Vice President
Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.
Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.
Armstrong said Cheney turned to shoot a bird and accidentally hit Whittington. She said Whittington was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital by ambulance.
Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president was with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin, Texas, and his wife at the hospital on Sunday afternoon.
Genius.

actually accidently shooting someone while hunting birds is probably the most common type of hunting accident. Birds paths are unpredictible, and when using a shotty on a moving target you're supposed to follow their movement in a sweeping motion. It isn't uncommon to have your sweeping motion start aiming high and end up at the ground (or at your buddy in this case).
Factor that in with the fact that when you feel the kick after the shot all of the pellets aren't out of the barrell yet, and it's being shot by an old ass man who likely isn't anywhere near physically strong enough to hold a shotgun but probably tries to hold it granny style (from the hip). It's just got stupidity written all over it.
Besides how could anyone think this is foul play? You know damn well no vice president is ever going to shoot somebody himself. They got armies doing that shit for them.

Cheney Accidentally Shoots Fellow Hunter
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer Sun Feb 12, 6:19 PM ET
WASHINGTON - Vice President
Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets.
Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin, was "alert and doing fine" in a Corpus Christi hospital Sunday after he was shot by Cheney on a ranch in south Texas, said Katharine Armstrong, the property's owner.
He was in stable condition Sunday, said Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi.
Armstrong in an interview with The Associated Press said Whittington, 78, was mostly injured on his right side, with the pellets hitting his cheek, neck and chest during the incident which occurred late afternoon on Saturday.
She said emergency personnel traveling with Cheney tended to Whittington until the ambulance arrived.
Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president met with Whittington and his wife at the hospital on Sunday. Cheney "was pleased to see that he's doing fine and in good spirits," she said.
The shooting was first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. The vice president's office did not disclose the accident until the day after it happened.
Armstrong said she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shoot at a covey of quail.
Whittington shot a bird and went to look for it in the tall grass, while Cheney and the third hunter walked to another spot and discovered a second covey.
Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong said.
"The vice president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."
Whittington has been a private practice attorney in Austin since 1950 and has long been active in Texas Republican politics. He's been appointed to several state boards, including when then-Gov. George W. Bush named him to the Texas Funeral Service Commission.
McBride did not comment about why the vice president's office did not tell reporters about the accident until the next day. She referred the question to Armstrong, who could not be reached again Sunday evening.
Armstrong, owner of the Armstrong Ranch where the accident occurred, said Whittington was bleeding and Cheney was very apologetic.
"It broke the skin," she said of the shotgun pellets. "It knocked him silly. But he was fine. He was talking. His eyes were open. It didn't get in his eyes or anything like that."
"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."
Cheney is an avid hunter who makes annual hunting trips to South Dakota to hunt pheasants. He also travels frequently to Arkansas to hunt ducks.
Armstrong said Cheney is a longtime friend who comes to the ranch to hunt about once a year and is "a very safe sportsman." She said Whittington is a regular, too, but she thought it was the first time the two men hunted together.
"This is something that happens from time to time. You now, I've been peppered pretty well myself," said Armstrong.
The 50,000-acre Armstrong ranch has been in the influential south Texas family since the turn of the last century. Katharine is the daughter of Tobin Armstrong, a politically connected rancher who has been a guest at the White House and spent 48 years as director of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. He died in October. Cheney was among the dignitaries who attended his funeral.
Shout Out to the birds everywhere laughing about this.

Isn't it the law in Texas that everyone over 11 has to be phyiscally carrying a shotgun anytime they are outside "city limits"?
Skelly when hunting birds you use "spreader" or "birdshot", it sprays an area (because I imagine its fucking hard to hit a flying bird with a single bullet).
Shot in the face? Thats a bad day.
Glenn 02-13-2006, 08:30 AM I think Bobby Knight once shot somebody that he was hunting with too.

which is why people use sawed offs (illegal, but it still happens). People think it's just for concealment in urban communities and that's why it's got laws against it. The truth is it's dangerous because the shot goes everywhere when it's blasted from a sawed off and hunters do it too because they get too drunk in their hunting camps to properly aim.
You can shoot slugs out of a shotty as well, however it doesn't really serve a purpose as a rifle could do the same thing with better accuracy and range. People don't use shotguns for anything but protection and hunting small animals that are hard to hit.
It would take a small miracle to be shot by a shotgun and only be hit by one pellet.

Well, you can't use full power rifles in much of MI thanks to population densities, so the shotgun slug is your best bet.

Hunter Shot by Cheney Has Heart Attack
AP - 20 minutes ago
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The 78-year-old lawyer who was shot by Vice President Dick Cheney in a hunting accident has some birdshot lodged in his heart and he had a "minor heart attack," a hospital official said Tuesday. Peter Banko, the hospital administrator at Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial, said Harry Whittington had the heart attack early Tuesday while being evaluated.

I'd even take a weaker rifle before i used shotgun slugs though. Their range isn't really that different from a handgun. Sure, They're powerful, but you'd have to get pretty close to the target to be aim accurately.

Yes I heard the same but it seems while tragic, Cheney's hunting buddy is in no danger of dying. Something fun for the media to speculate on. One of the pellets lodged into his heart and bruised it. The poor sap will have to live with a pellet lodged in his heart muscle forever but is expected to make a full recovery.

H1Man 02-15-2006, 05:07 PM Cheney Takes Responsibility for Shooting in Fox Interview
Vice President Dick Cheney, in an interview with Fox News, took the blame for a hunting accident that left a friend and supporter hospitalized with shotgun wounds.
``I'm the guy who pulled the trigger and shot my friend,'' Cheney said in an excerpt of the interview broadcast this afternoon. ``That's the bottom line.''
Cheney's comments in the Fox interview were his first on the accident since it occurred Feb. 11. The vice president said he still believes it was ``the right call'' to let the owner of the ranch where the mishap happened to inform the local newspaper about the incident rather than make an announcement through his press office.
Austin attorney Harry Whittington remains hospitalized with wounds from shotgun pellets to the face, neck and chest. Cheney described it as the ``worst day'' of his life.
It's not Harry's fault,'' Cheney said. ``You can't blame anybody else.''
