TNT is doing an add on to the "50 greatest players of all time" from a few years ago, and they are calling it "The next 10".

Apparently, they have it down to 20 finalists, and Joe D is one of them.

Ten from TNT

When the NBA in 1996 announced its top 50 players for its first 50 seasons, Alex English and Adrian Dantley were among those snubbed. Now, they're getting a mulligan.

On Feb. 18, during All-Star Weekend, TNT will unveil what it calls its "next 10." With the NBA in its 60th season, the network will reveal 10 additional players to comprise the top 60 in league history.

Several active stars, such as Bryant and Tim Duncan, figure to be locks, but TNT also is taking a look at some passed over 10 years ago. Among them are English, a former Nuggets star who retired in 1991, and Dantley, a two-time scoring champion who also retired in 1991 and now is a Nuggets assistant.

"Yeah," said Dantley, when asked if he should be on TNT's next 10. "The key is how many active players (are being considered)."

The process got under way when 14 TNT announcers and analysts were provided a list of 36 players. Each ranked them on a 1-to-10 point system and the top-10 vote-getters will be honored.

TNT public relations director Jeff Pomeroy said 16 players have been eliminated. So the top 10 will be announced from a list he provided of 20 finalists.

Other than Bryant and Duncan, active players remaining are James, Kevin Garnett, Allen Iverson, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash and Gary Payton.

Other than English and Dantley, retired players still in the mix are Walt Bellamy, Joe Dumars, Connie Hawkins, Dennis Johnson, Bernard King, Bob Lanier, Bob McAdoo, Reggie Miller, Dennis Rodman and Dominique Wilkins.

During TNT's show, Charles Barkley, Doug Collins, Ernie Johnson, Magic Johnson and Kenny Smith will debate the merits of those selected and those left out.

The NBA is not involved in TNT's list, but there are indications the league might do a top 75 for the league's 75th anniversary. If they don't make the cut this time, English and Dantley might get a third chance.

I recall Shaq saying he didn't yet deserve a spot because of his age when the original list was offered, and said he thought Joe was the biggest omitance. Of course Shaq's knowledge of the 1960's era NBA may be limited, but a nice endorsement.

I don't really like the idea of active players making the list but I guess I can see the point.

Bob McAdoo should definitely make the list though.

I disagree. I don't see Dumars as anything but a Chauncey Billups with better defense.

Who was the 10?

Forgot off hand, but there was a ton of unretired guys on there.

Stupid.

I remember Duncan and Kobe being on top, while Dumars ended up being 16th.

I'm guessing that the Hawkins that was listed in the Next 10 was Connie Hawkins and not Hersey Hawkins?

My case against Joe Dumars: This is said without malice. It is a joke that Joe Dumars is even a finalist for the Hall of Fame. In his 14-year NBA career, he was never named All-NBA First Team. He was All-NBA second team only once. In fact, he was one of the six best guards in the NBA (All-NBA third team) only twice. He made only six All Star Games in his 14-years.

He wasn't the best offensive player on his team (Isiah Thomas was). He wasn't the best defensive player on his team (Dennis Rodman was). After his first five years, his career average was 13.9 points per game. At his retirement, he played 1,018 games and scored 16,401 points. It sounds like a lot, but his contemporary Michael Jordan (the same age as Dumars) played roughly the same number of games and scored 32,292 points.

Okay, so he was only half the player that Jordan was. But Dumars wasn't the equal of Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Clyde Drexler, John Stockton, Mitch Richmond, Gary Payton, or Reggie Miller. If you include the players who came in a decade after Dumars (Kidd, Iverson, Bryant, McGrady, Nash) you can see how Dumars is below them all.

I saw Dumars play his entire career. He was a tremendous defensive player. He was a steady three-point shooter. He rarely turned the ball over. He was a very good player. He wasn't great. He doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame.

I can kinda see his point, but JoeD should go on there. From Reggie to undoubtedly the best in Jordan, he handled his business on the court and made a statement to any guard in the NBA at the time.

Also add his works as a GM. He did say he enjoyed the championship as a GM more than as a player. If not now, he will be and SHOULD be, eventually.

If we were not Detroit fans would we care if Joe didn't make it?

It will suck if he doesn't make it, though.

The league named a fucking award after him as well
