The Detroit Pistons have finally shown they are not invincible in the last eight days. To prove they're not slumping, they'll have to beat one of the league's hottest clubs.

The Pistons, losers of consecutive games for the first time this season, try to avoid a third straight defeat as they host the surging Los Angeles Clippers.

Detroit lost 99-98 Tuesday at Atlanta on a basket by Joe Johnson with 7.5 seconds left. The Pistons also lost at Indiana last Saturday and at New Jersey on Jan. 31, giving them three of their eight losses in barely more than a week's time.

"They made plays. We didn't," said Pistons coach Flip Saunders. "As I told our guys, I haven't thought over the last week that we've been very sharp. We've let teams hang around.

"Guys are tired or whatever, but we're not playing with that zip, with that sense of urgency."

Tayshaun Prince led Detroit with a season-high 29 points, including eight of the team's final 10, but the Pistons still lost at Atlanta for the first time since Dec. 7, 2002.

"We had control of the game," said Ben Wallace, who had 11 of Detroit's 30 rebounds. "We didn't really play with the heart and desire that we usually play with. We didn't come out and impose our will on this team.

"We look to come out and win every game but you know, strange things happen in this league. Some nights it doesn't go for you."

The Pistons have not lost three consecutive games since March 22-25, 2005.

Detroit has defeated the Clippers six straight times and in 15 of the last 19 meetings, including a 109-101 victory Dec. 11 at Los Angeles.

But to take the Clippers lightly now could be a mistake. Los Angeles has won its last four games, all of them on the road, and has won nine of 10 overall.

"If we want to contend with the upper-echelon teams, then we have to play well (Wednesday) and expect to win," Clippers forward Elton Brand said. "They're going to be revved up at home, so we got to bring it."

Brand led Los Angeles with 25 points and 12 rebounds in Tuesday night's 85-82 victory at New York. Sam Cassell scored just 13 points on 4-for-11 shooting, but hit consecutive 3-pointers in the final two minutes to give the Clippers the lead for good.

"At that time, it doesn't matter what he's shooting -- 0-for-10, 0-for-20 -- he's going to knock down a big shot for us," Brand said.

Brand had 36 points and 10 rebounds against the Pistons earlier this season, and has a 21.8 lifetime scoring average against Detroit.

The Clippers are just one game behind the 1974-75 Buffalo Braves for the best record in franchise history through 46 games. That team finished a franchise-best 49-33.

the clips are a solid squad. with chauncey banged up and the starters supposedly tired, things could get ugly. hopefully Flip can bring in the bench early and often.

the pistons look to avoid prolonging their longest (and only) losing streak of the season.

God, now that i'm going to night school, every game is going to be on a tuesday and wednesday. Fuck that.

Being tired is not a friggin excuse when everybody else has played the same number of games. The players don't seem to care - we lost to Atlanta. well that happens, not a big deal. great way to get over a losing streak. the pistons beat a quality opponent in the Clippers. the 2nd quarter, they clamped down on defense, allowing only 15 points. it was good to see the Piston's D again.

I cant comment on the game too much, since I only saw portions of it in class, but every time I looked up, it seemed that Dice was hitting a turn around, and in the 4th, TP really took over. Nice to see somene becides Chauncey do that.
