heres the deal:

want to buy a car.

willing to spend ~4000 (completely paying with student loans. cant justify spending more than this).

main purpose is to drive downtown everyday (~5 miles) but will be driving all over metro detroit and ann arbor from time to time.

gas mileage isnt a high priority.

slight preference to SUV's, but obviously i'll be limited with my price range.

i want a car that will last me 2 years.

im not very handy with cars, but my dad and 2 brother-in-laws are.

any advice? where i should go, what i should get? i've heard good things about auctions. i've also heard good things about police auctions, but the idea of buying a car that might not even start is too risky for me.

any help/advice/smart ass remark is all welcome.

ps bitches should want to get with me strictly because of this car. not saying its a requirement, but im not buying a minivan.

If you are spending 4k, that thing better last you more than 2 years. If you want to make the most of your money, don't buy it from a dealer. Buy from a private owner. I would suggest looking on/at Autotrader online or in the magazine.

Just make sure you don't get a lemon. Check for things like major dents and such. That will tell you if it's been in accidents that might have caused non-repaired internal damage. Best thing is to grab a reletive/buddy who is a mechanic or something to look it over quick. My Gpa did that with me (was a body shop worker for 30 years) and he spotted past accidents, oil leaks, future rust spots, etc in minutes.

And don't be afraid to ask for oil change and repair receipts to make sure it's been maitained.

I'm sure MOLA and Shugadaddi would have some good advice/insight on this topic.

Shug hooked up Denny with something sweet.

Carfax and a private sale is the way to go when dealing with $4k. If your car is working right now, I'd just stay with that.
