View Full Version : Present Day NBA Nicknames
MoTown 01-31-2006, 01:01 PM Is it just me, or are the NBA nicknames for the players just getting worse and worse? They're usually given to them by the media, but there is a serious lack of creativity out there.
The reason I bring this up (and I know he is an idiot) is because of this intro that Chad Ford wrote to his collumn:
Where Should CP3 Be?How would super-rookie Chris Paul look in Celtic green? In Blazer stripes? In Atlanta? Back home in Carolina? Chad Ford passes judgment on seven teams that let CP3 get away.
CP3? That's the fucking best he can do??? It's so creative that they took it away from Chauncey's equally creative nickname: CB1. Wade has a very impressive one with FLASH.
My question is, can you think of any worse NBA nicknames than this? And can you remember the good nicknames from the Glory Days, when players nicknames were fresh and even slightly creative?
SpartyNick 01-31-2006, 01:08 PM My favorite has always been "The Iceman" - George Gervin.
Glenn 01-31-2006, 01:12 PM I was always partial to Sam "Big Smooth" Perkins.
Chuck G-COAT Nevitt has my vote.
Vinny 01-31-2006, 01:42 PM I liked Sleepy Sam Perkins Better.
The Bad Boys Pistons were the best, IMO:
Dennis "The Worm" Rodman
Vinny "The Microwave" Johnson
John "Spider" Salley
"Zeke" was kind of Random I guess.
James "Buddha" Edwards
William "Crack Rock" Bedford
MoTown 01-31-2006, 01:55 PM Budha was a great nickname, as was Spider Salley.
I always thought the best name in the NBA right now is "The Big Nasty."
Also, on the category of bad nicknames, does it get any worse when people just combine the first letter or syllable and the first syllable in the last name? TMac, ARod, CBill, JuanGone to name a few.
The "Big Ticket" is also really bad.
WTFchris 01-31-2006, 02:16 PM Haven't there been some retred names too? Can't think of any off hand, but there have been some that weren't original at all.
"Never Nervous" Pervous, Pervis Ellison, is my all time fave.
"The Matrix" has caused me to hate Shawn Marion more than I ever should.
[BTW, "Zeke" is a common nickname for both the names Isiah and Isaac.]
You have the marketing nicknames and they you have the teammate nicknames - the marketing nicknames are usually ridiculous.
I for one hate, HATE, Mr. Big Shot.
MoTown 01-31-2006, 03:34 PM Seconded. I even hate the song when he makes a shot now.
"You had to be a big shot, didn't ya?"

Cross 01-31-2006, 06:31 PM The Junk Yard Dog was ok.
Why the fuck is Dwight Howard called D12?
Kobe was called Mambo or some shit right?
Artis Gilmore 01-31-2006, 09:55 PM I thought Paul was the 4th pick in the draft? So how the fuck could Boston get him?
MOLA1 01-31-2006, 11:12 PM Thunder Dan
Darth Thanatos 01-31-2006, 11:47 PM Shawn "Baby Daddy" Kemp
GotCrotty? 02-01-2006, 12:02 AM Theres a few good ones out there. But the Pistons nick names are a little bit on the lame side.
"The Palace Prince"
"Mr. Big Shot, CB1"
"Big Ben"
I do like a few of them
"The Matrix"
"Babyfat"
"White Chocolate"
But the majority aren't great.
Old school has today annihilated when it comes to nicknames.
Today Wilt the Stilt would be called W-Chaim and Earl the Pearl would be E-Mon.
Kobe was called Mambo or some shit right?
Kobe calls himself Mamba. After the Kill Bill movies.
MoTown 02-01-2006, 09:46 AM Yeah giving yourself a nickname makes you pretty much a tool. Reason #3,245,921 that Kobe is a douche.
Though I must say "The Rapist" is a pretty good nickname.
Black Dynamite 02-01-2006, 11:08 AM Kobe was called Mambo or some shit right?
