The Detroit Pistons seek to close out a near-perfect January with a 12th straight victory, and try to end the New Jersey Nets' eight-game home winning streak when the teams meet for the second time this season.

Detroit improved to 13-1 this month after a 102-93 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. The Pistons are two victories shy of matching their franchise record of 13 straight wins, last set from Dec. 27, 2003-Jan. 19, 2004.

With Sunday's victory, Detroit improved to an NBA-best 37-5 and tied the fourth-best record through 42 games in NBA history.

The win was keyed by a strong defensive effort. Despite allowing 39 points to Los Angeles superstar Kobe Bryant, the Pistons limited the rest of the Lakers to 37 percent shooting.

"It didn't matter if (Bryant) had 50, 40, 20, 10 -- the idea was for us to win," Pistons first-year coach Flip Saunders said. "The idea was not to try to expose our defense where all the sudden, you have other guys that have career games."

Leading scorer Richard Hamilton is averaging 22.2 points during Detroit's winning streak. Hamilton, who has never been an All-Star, is shooting 52 percent this month.

The team-oriented Pistons have received contributions from every member of their starting five during the most successful first half of a season in team history.

"As our team is, as a coach you can become more flexible," Saunders said. "When you're more flexible, you become less predictable. Usually, the less predictable you are, the tougher it is to play against you."

Although the Nets have not lost at home since Dec. 14, they come into this contest struggling.

New Jersey completed a winless four-game road trip with a 113-104 defeat to Seattle on Saturday, and has dropped eight of 11 following a 10-game winning streak.

"We will just have to evaluate and get better," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "No one is happy with the way we've performed. We have a real good group of players and good character guys, so there is no doubt in my mind that we're going to find a way out of it."

The Nets are starting a stretch against the three best teams in the Eastern Conference -- Detroit, Cleveland and Miami.

"It doesn't get any easier; we are going home to play the best teams in basketball," Frank said. "That is the beauty of this league. You do it on a nightly basis and we can keep on trying to get better."

Vince Carter missed the third game of the road trip with a back injury after scoring a total of eight points on 3-for-23 shooting in the first two games, but returned to the lineup and had 29 points in Saturday's loss.

"I was tired. I hit a few shots, but I was out of breath," he said. "I was more excited and ready to get out there and contribute to the team and try to get us a win."

Detroit has won four of the last five meetings between these teams.

On another note, the Pistons played well enough to win for most of the game, but got a little lax at the end. I've got a feeling they're going to drop the next game at NJ. I think they might be getting a little overconfident and relaxed. It's time for a wake-up call. I hope I'm wrong.

there was so much to see in this game. this was the biggest fluke/steal i've seen in a long time.

A couple of thigns to notice is that Krstic was holding Rasheed or Ben everytime they went for a rebound they didn't even call it once, then went they did call a double foul on Rasheed all he was doing was getting his arm free. I can't believe he didn't get a tech right there.

there's a reason why Ben only got 8 boards, Krstic only got 6 and Kidd got 12. In addition to missed threes going further out, The NJ bigs can't grab the ball when they're busy grabbing Sheed/Ben, so the ball finds Kidd. Tayshaun really should have hit the glass hard this game because of that. If delfino would've played 20 minutes he would've got 10 boards.

Also Jason Kidd will never shoot that good again in his life. Rasheed will never shoot that poorly this season. Ben will not have a game with no blocks or steals again all season.

This loss obviously sucks, but i'm not that dissappointed with it.

as bad as it sounds, you take out Kidd's ridiculous 5-8, 62% 3pt percentages and we win this game. that's DESPITE shooting 36.6% FG and getting out rebounded. i'm not sure if that's a testament to how bad NJ is or how overconfident the Pistons were last night.

just for reference, Kidd's 3PT shooting the past few games: 1-6, 2-8, 2-4, 1-8, 1-4. granted those were on the road, Kidd's never been the reliable three point shooter.

that said, Sheed has no business jacking up 11 3pters by himself.
