The 12-time All-Star agreed Sunday to a $2 million, one-year contract with the San Diego Padres

this signing reminds me of renting a car
the padres just rented a run down car cheap and they are going to run the shit out of it for a few days then take it back

$2 mill is nothing to them so this is a pretty good deal

I'm shocked that he went to the NL.

That $8 million mutual option for next year is a joke.

Piazza had 19 HRs last year
...
More than any other player on the Padres

But he'll be playing in a huge ballpark, and probably only catching 100 games at most.

Add to that the fact that he can't throw anybody out anymore, and I'm still puzzled.

so what are the chances we could dump pudges' contract on the mets and how would we replace him if we did?

This was a good move for the Padres. Ramon Hernandez is gone to the Orioles and they need a rental, even if that's all it is. The great weather should perk up Piazza. He'll get to play against his old Blue boys often enough and try to exercise a little revenge for them trading him.
Huge park, fine - Pac Bell and Dodger Stadium are decent size as well, but he'll poke a bunch out at Coors.
He may not knock out 19, or even the most on the team (no excuse for Klesko not to hit more than 20, same for Giles) but he'll still be a prescence.

I don't understand Piazza. The idea several years ago was to have him move to first in order to extend his career, and reduce injury. Never happened.

Now, the Padres are going to pull the same thing?

When healthy, Piazza is still a potent hitter. I, too, am surprised he went to the NL, and not a DH position in the AL, where I think his career would've lasted several more years.
