Only four teams have found a way to defeat the Detroit Pistons this season. Recent history suggests the Memphis Grizzlies have a decent chance to be the fifth.

Looking for their ninth straight win, the Pistons host a Grizzlies club that swept them last season and pushed the defending Eastern Conference champions to two overtimes before losing the first meeting of 2005-06.

Detroit continued to roll Wednesday night, defeating Milwaukee 106-102 in overtime. Chauncey Billups, after not taking a single shot in the first half while dishing out eight assists, scored all 23 of his points after halftime, including 11 in the extra period, to lift the Pistons.

"In the first half, I was breaking down the defense, and guys were wide open," he said. "But they made some adjustments, so I knew if I was aggressive, I would get some open looks."

Billups has helped the Pistons get off to the fourth-best 40-game record in NBA history. They haven't lost since falling 94-90 to Utah, the only team to beat them twice this season, Jan. 7 at Detroit.

"We don't care about the numbers," Pistons center Ben Wallace said. "We just want to add them up at the end of the season and come up with home-court advantage."

If not for a similarly clutch overtime performance by Billups, Detroit would be trying to avoid a fourth straight loss to Memphis on Friday. The Grizzlies swept the season series in 2004-05, winning 72-68 at Detroit on Dec. 4, 2004 and blowing the Pistons out 101-79 at Memphis on Jan. 6, 2005.

The Grizzlies looked poised to knock off the Pistons again Dec. 19, when they rallied from 15 points down to force overtime. The game went to a second extra period and appeared headed for a third before Billups connected on a 15-footer with 0.3 seconds left to give Detroit a 106-104 victory.

Billups had missed potential game-winning shots in the last second of regulation and the first overtime before finally putting the Grizzlies away.

"You have to understand that (the Grizzlies) compete hard, and mental fatigue and mental mistakes happen," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said after that victory.

Memphis held Detroit, one of the league's highest-scoring teams at 100 points per game, to three field goals in the fourth period.

The Pistons will be facing a Grizzlies club that is playing well coming into Friday's matchup. Memphis is looking for its second straight win and third in four games since a four-game losing streak.

The Grizzlies routed Minnesota 107-87 on Wednesday, as Pau Gasol broke out of an offensive slump with 30 points and eight rebounds. Gasol had averaged 11.3 points in his previous four games and took only eight shots in Tuesday's 94-82 loss to Miami.

"I was really focused and really aware of the fact that I needed to pick it up, have a good start and be really aggressive," Gasol said. "So, that's what I did."

Eddie Jones added 22 points for Memphis.

man we have a ridiculous power switch. offense just came out of nowhere. but the griz played amazing defense, cbill with only 4 assists more because of the team defense. their weak link on defense was jackson and especially the chuckster.

Fred Mcleod has issues. that is all

This is the best thing I can think of when commenting about Chauncey Billups. One of the weaknesses of the Pistons used to be that they didn't have that elite player, that superstar. Well, the evolution of Chauncey Billups' game makes that a moot point. He's one of the 10 best players in basketball right now.

As for the game, we lose that last season. We were on the verge of implosion when Flip got that T. Instead, we come through when it matters. Again. Fantastic.

Anthony
01-27-2006, 10:58 PM
I was actually hopeing that flip would get him self ejected to try and light a fire under the pistons. They looked flat for a while in the 4th.

And BTW, this was the worst officiated game I ever saw this year.

maybe not the worst, but bad enough. they let too many fouls happen on both sides and picked odd times to finally call fouls.

"How are you goint to do that in a game like this!"

I love this team

This team is flat out amazing. And it looks like Sheed has a legit shot at STARTING in the All-Star Game with Jermaine out. The league office decides apparently, but Sheed is the third leading vote getter for all forwards, so if he doesn't start, I'm personally going to be pissed. Then you consider Ben is probably a lock, along with Chauncey, and Rip is on the bubble. We really could have four All-Stars.

I get the feeling that LB would have beaten Chauncey to death on-site if he had even looked at that pull-up three in transition last year. That was one ballsy play.

"It doesn't amaze me," said Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince, who scored 16 points. "It doesn't amaze anybody on our team because we know what he's capable of doing.

Sometimes you're like, 'Why'd he shoot that?' because a lot of them are bad shots, but the confidence that he has, they go in. But trust me, the way he's been playing, we can live and die with Chauncey making the decision with the game on the line because we know the majority of the time, he's going to make it."

I saw that. I wonder if the guys get pissed at him when he bricks those shots? That's the only thing that worries me about this "Chauncey for MVP" thing. We don't want the rest of the guys getting jealous, or Billups too big-headed.

Lets not forget, he also dishes the ball out alot. He's had a lot of 10+ assist games this year. He's playing unreal. I just find it too bad RIP dosnt get near the credit he deserves. 50% for a jump shooter is one hell of a #. Not to mention he leads the NBA in 3pt %. We have the best backcourt in the NBA. To bad most people olny relize half of that.
