This is a post copied from another thread about my hanging out with Linh about a week ago:
That's right, this thread is being bumped back up. Nice new developments have occurred.
I had just returned home from hanging out at my friend's (short fat Korean kid) house and was sitting down to watch ESPN when I get a phone call. Linh was on the other line, wanting to hang out with me. I told her I still wanted to go to the play (which I later would do), but I'd like to hang out with her for a little while. So I refreshed my applied deodorant, popped in a couple mints, put on a belt for a change, put the dog in his pen and headed for her house.
She gives me a phone call on the way to her house. Basically she told me that her and her boyfriend were fighting a lot lately, mostly over her hanging out with friends while she would patiently wait for him while he was with his friends. She told me that she'd wait AT HIS HOUSE for him to show up until it was time to go to school the next day. That's just messed up, and I let her know that.
Once I pull up in her driveway she comes right to the car. Her outfit of choice is by far more modest than she wears normally. Undershirt, low-cut top, and her usual denim jacket, combining for a fair amount of cleavage, which she actually has. She also wore jeans (a rarity) and flip flops because Oregon girls still believe in their hearts that they live in Cali. She also left her contacts at home, which was good in my opinion.
We head to a mall in downtown Salem because her boyfriend is at the mall closest to her house and she doesn't want a confrontation and doesn't want to be seen with me. So we head for downtown. Within a few minutes, my brother (who I'll refer to as little PNF) calls and says he needs a ride home from swimming practice. Linh doesn't mind that we give him one, so I turn around and head for my high school.
On the way there, Linh gives me a wonderfully detailed account of her struggles. First of all, her grades have absolutely suffered because she skips school very nearly every day to hang out with her friends or hang out with her boyfriend. She also told me that she doesn't do her homework, bringing her grades down further. In addition, her boyfriend and her constantly fight about her hanging out with other people and him also hanging out with other people. Furthermore, she's kinda letting herself go a bit. She wanted to go to Oregon State University, but her grades are too bad to apply, and she hasn't yet applied to a college. (More than likely, she'll end up at Chemeketa Community College, which is about six blocks from her house.) She also admitted to me that she's letting herself go a bit in terms of weight and doesn't plan on dieting in the near future. She kept talking about how she has a ton of stress, but she takes each individual stress for what it is and tries not to blow it out of proportion.
We get to the school, only we have to wait for little PNF. So Linh takes the time to call her boyfriend (no answer) and her boyfriend's sister to see what was up. After she hung up, she said four words I could barely believe: "I love my boyfriend." I said that, while she may love him, he's being a bitch for treating her like he has. Only, she doesn't seem to care.
Little PNF finds us and then we leave. On the way out, Linh asks little PNF if he has a girlfriend (he does not) and laughed at the possibility that he may have a girlfriend before I do. (I want to smack her, but instead just tell her exactly how difficult it is to actually get what I want. She told me to look at girls from other schools. Evidently, there's no real connection being made.) Then she tells me that she saw the show "Beauty and the Geek" and thinks that one day, maybe I'll get my first kiss from a real hot supermodel. (Ya hear that, Derek?)
We drop off little PNF, say hi to my mom, then leave. I try to go into more detail about why her grades slipped and that she may want to stop it. She told me that while she understands stuff, she's too lazy to act upon it. Great. Wonderful attitude.
We make a stop at the Dairy Queen where she works so that she can pick up a check and pay for food (she told me that since I paid for her in Portland, she'd pay for mine). We got a blizzard for her, a blizzard for me, and a 4-piece chicken basket for the boyfriend. On the way to his house (You here that, Wizzle? I know where her boyfriend lives. Who wants to commit arson?), Linh tells me about how she'll wait for literally days to see her boyfriend and how their arguments will leave her reduced to tears and throwing things and screaming. But she always followed with the fact that she still loves him. I told her she's better than this, and she's a good person, and she said, "That's what my boyfriend tells me every night." Kill me. Then she calls her boyfriend's sister to warn her of her arrival.
I find his house without I problem, fail to obtain a goodbye hug ("I don't want him to see me and get jealous," she claims), and watch as another petite Asian girl lets her into the house. Following that, my night got kinda crazy, but that's all that needs to be said.
In conclusion...wow. You don't want to save someone who doesn't want to be saved. And I'm not gonna be the beaten puppy chasing after a beaten puppy.
