This is it WTFers. All the hype, all the trash talk, and all the hatred. It's time for archrivals Michigan and Michigan State to settle it on the court at Crisler Arena. This has all the makings of a great matchup. State is 15-4 and has won 3 in a row, Michigan is 13-3 and is coming off back to back wins. The Spartans are probably playing the best ball they've played so far this year and this is Michigan's most talented team they've had in a while.

Injuries are a concern as Paul Davis tweaked an ankle in practice and Lester Abram rolled his ankle pretty badly vs. Minnesota. Davis should be OK, but Lester's status remains questionable, more likely doubtful. [smilie=uhoh.gif]

Whatever you do, make sure you have your VCR or TiVo set to record LOST, because you not a sports fan in Michigan if you don't watch this game on Wednesday night. [smilie=thegame.gif]

Is it just more or is the Michigan home crowd one of the lamest ever? The worst is that new student zone they got going in recent years where the kids try to act like they are duke and only half the kids are excited and the other ones are confused.

I am still waiting on word on the x-ray results.

With or without Abram I think UM can win. I also think they can lose with or without him.

No excuses. Good teams can overcome the loss of a player and move on. God knows he has been injured enough the last two years.

If they can stay close to Indiana on the road without Abram they should be able to keep MSU close at home without Abram.

With that said...Abram does not play they get waxed.

* UM ranks 5th in all time Big Ten winning pct, or 9th if you factor in the Ed Martin 1990's forfeits.

* UM has won exactly 1 NCAA Tournament game since the 1994-95 season. That is 10th in the Big Ten.

* UM has not been ranked since the 1997-98 season. Only Northwestern has a longer drought.

* Against UM, MSU has won 4 straight, 12 of 13, 18 of 29, 30 of 53.

* Against UM at Crisler, MSU has won 2 straight, 5 of the last 6, 6 of the last 10, 8 of the last 14, 13 of the last 26.

* UM has finished ahead of MSU in the Big Ten just 3 times since 1990, and two of these don't count due to forfeiture.

Her name's Erin Marie..she is/was a student at MSU. There was a string of pictures of her (including a few full body shots) on another board that I frequent. I can't seem to echo-locate the picture's original source though.

For some strange reason I just saved the few pictures that displayed massive closeups of her fucking enormous tits.

Latest word on Abram's injury is that he's day to day with an ankle sprain. A mod on The Wolverine.com said they should know more by this afternoon/evening.

It's definitely a major blow if Abram cannot play. That changes the whole dynamic of the game and causes Ron Coleman, Jerret Smith and Jevohn Shepherd to get more minutes. [smilie=arrgh.jpg]

With that said, I still think Michigan can win because of the X factor, Daniel Horton, if he plays anything like he did Saturday vs. Minnesota (32 points) Michigan has a good chance.

Bottom Line-I stand by my prediction of last year, Michigan wins with or without Abram.

GO BLUE! [smilie=horns.gif]

I hear that Abram's ankle does not look good at all. I believe the presser is today at 3:30. We should now more then.

If Abram plays he will contain Ager...With the fact that Ager will be playing on the road and that he will have one of the Big Ten's best defenders on him he will be useless.

The Shannon Brown vs Daniel Horton match up is what I want to see. I am hoping that Horton is on Brown because even though Harris says he is 100% I do not think he really is. Harris can stick on Neitzel and will do just fine. I really like brown on Davis. I think that he will at least keep him off the glass. Simms can stick with Trannon or Gray.

The key will be Abram and the bench. If Hunter can hit his jumpers and Petway can keep the crowd jacked up along with Abram playing I like UM.

However, no Lester...no victory. He means so much to that team just being on the court as a leader - if he is not there...sorry guys, it does not look good.

Alright, first of all, great job Moodini with the opening thread. One of the best I've seen! props

Regarding the injuries, Davis' ankle injury was hardly a "tweak" seeing that he almost didn't play. Regardless, it doesn't matter.

I am extremely surprised by the overly confident Wolverines I've been hearing from. For once, this isn't trash talk, but I don't know how you guys can be confident. Excited about the opportunity? Okay, I could see that. But, being confident about a game against MSU? hmmm....I don't know fellas.

Interesting Muhme that you believe Abram is one of the BT's best defenders and that you believe he will hold down Ager. I don't know about that my friend.

The key to the game will be post play. If Michigan State dominates inside, Michigan has no chance. If Michigan holds their own inside or plays better inside than State, they have a "chance."

I can't see U of M winning without Abram (sorry). MSU has the best wings in the country, and I don't know how they are going to match them without Abram. Unless Sims can go off and get Davis in foul trouble I just can't see a U of M win.

That being said, the home team in the Big 10 CAN always win, so it's possible.

The key to this game is Mo Ager. I can picture Muhme's wet dream of Ager going 0-12 from the field while turning the ball over 10 times. If Ager shows the Spartans win by 15. If Ager vanishes it will be a toss up with either team winning by 2-4 points. If Abrams is out Michigan is in trouble.

Personally Muhme I hope Ager throws in 30 and you cry yourself to sleep. I know Michigan isn't ranked but a rivalry game is still big time, especially on the road.

Now...Yes, it would be my dream to see Ager suck ass and watch Shannon run around like the stud on that team that he is.

Tre...I think that Lester has the speed, size and the athletic ability to stick with Ager. I do not like Mo's game at all...so he does not worry me. It is guys like Brown and Gray that worry me. Everyone else will fall into place. Gray, Brown and Trannon bring such a bad ass swagger to that team if they get rolling it will be tough to slow down.

I have two things to say. The first being, why am I not worried that much about this game? It's really weird. Michigan is pretty good, it is on the road in the BT, Michigan and their crowd will be completely jacked. So why am I not worried. I had the same feeling about the Iowa game and they were ranked. I was sitting back, chillin, enjoying the win. Not an ounce of worry from the tip. For some reason, I'm like that with this game. I know Michigan could win, but for some reason I'm cool as the other side of the pillow.

Second, here is a great quote from Jim Comp. He is so right and I think he kindof puts the whole game BACK into perspective.

"Only the Bad Streaks Count"
EAST LANSING - Michigan State has won three straight games against ranked opponents, and has five wins against Top 25 teams on the year - not that anyone cares about that stuff anymore. Lose once to Michigan, and people will think the sky is falling (again). [/quote]

How am I being arrogant? I said several times that Michigan has a shot to upset the Spartans. If I was arrogant, I'd say that Michigan doesn't have a chance in hell because MSU is superior and they always win. I'm not saying that am I? I'm sorry if I don't feel "worried." Do you want me to lie?

BTW in the latest coaches' poll MSU is #12 and Michigan is #26. "So you're tellin me there's a chance"?

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying? What do you want me to say? Am I supposed to say UM will win? I said they have a chance. They do don't they? I don't get what I said that was inaccurate?

Moodini, I'm starting to wonder how much college hoops you've watched this year. Michigan isn't a great team. They are probably the 6th or 7th team in the Big Ten. Here I am talking about how Michigan has a shot and it should be a good one and you taking offense to it. It's like you want me to give some massive props and say State is going to lose or something. I don't get it.

This isn't a trash talk post. I'm just trying to get a grasp of your opinion of Michigan.

You seem extremely confident about this game on Wed. And your comment above leads me to believe that you think that Michigan is now the power or something? Is that what you mean by "Things done changed" ???

Do you believe this is THE year for Michigan? Are you a total believer now?

Your comments and confidence lead me to believe you believe all these things. I'm not questioning them, just wanting to make sure I know how you feel about this Michigan team. You seem to have went from shaky optimism with this team to extreme confidence.

Ok, here's my two cents. I'll be cheering for Michigan and hoping, and I think it is certainly possible for Michigan to win this game. Having said that, I'm not positive they have the swagger yet. Ranked teams have just enough to do them in.

By the way, I could totally see a blowout too. Michigan doesn't match up nearly as well against a deep State team as they do Illinois. Michigan still makes some pretty bad mistakes, and still likes to shoot the longball even when it's not falling. They impressed me a lot when they battled back multiple times against Illinois. This should be an interesting game. State still isn't top 10 though, so it wouldn't prove to be a monumental win if UM pulled it out.

Tre,

I definitely don't think this is "the year" for Michigan, but it's the best team they've had in a while so I'm excited. I actually feel like we have a chance to beat State for the first time since Horton's freshman season. Do you blame me for that? I'm not calling for a "changing of the guard" yet, but I like where the program is headed. I think we can actually "hang" with you guys now.

As far as your arrogance goes, maybe I took it the wrong way, but I have a hard time believing that you are going to chill out, watch the game and be "as cool as the other side of the pillow". I'm thinkin' you'll be on the edge of your seat. I know there have been years in football where M is a big favorite over MSU and every year, I'm not "as cool as the other side of the pillow". I always get a bit nervous because it's a rivalry game, especially when the game is on the road.

Earlier I said I was confident. That was before I knew the extent of Abram's injury. Here's Amaker's comments on Abram's injury "It's been diagnosed at this point as a severe ankle sprain," said Amaker. "There's nothing more I can say other than we're going to evaluate him and he probably won't practice today. Not practicing today leads us to believe it might be a stretch for Wednesday, but I don't have a medical title." I'm getting less and less confident as the game gets closer, but I still think homecourt and Michigan's momentum they have rolling right now will be enough to pull out a tight one vs. Sparty. I'llstick with my prediction from a year ago.

Jethro34

Michigan State has a ton of momentum right now and they are playing great basketball. They are one of the only Big Ten teams that has had an impressive road win and have played all the top teams in the conference, winning 3 out of the 5. Michigan has a so-so win against Minnesota and wins against Purdue and Northwestern. Michigan keeps it close in the first half, but Michigan State will exert their will in the second half.

I didn't say I'd sit back as cool as the other side of the pillow for tomorrow's game. Read what I wrote again. I said I sat that way during the Iowa game. And I said I felt cool and calm about this game. No doubt I'll be on the edge of my seat when it comes though.

Earlier I said I was confident. That was before I knew the extent of Abram's injury.
An injury is understandable to a point. If a top guy is missing, you've got an argument. But, when a guy spends his whole career on the sideline, eventually it just becomes irrelavent. Sounds like excuses are brewing already.

My offical prediction. MSU gets out to an 8 or 10 point lead and Michigan rallies back in the second half for a 3 point win. Horton carries the Wolverines with 25, Dion has 16, and Courtney doesn't bitch out and gets 12 pts and 10 boards. Petway gets the crowd crazy hyped after 2 huge dunks in the second half and uses that energy and momentum to pull the upset.

I can't guarantee a road victory. I've got too much respect for the road BT environment. I will most definately guarantee a home win in the Brez.

But, don't assume I'm gonna bitch out either. I'm not guaranteeing doesn't mean I'm not predicting. My prediction is a 12 point win for the Spartans. Early energy and some threes keep Michigan in it. Easy dunks and buckets like last year help MSU pull away.

Those refs were terrible. You have to admit even if your a UM fan. I think the 90 year old middle school ref could have done a better job. Here's what you can look forward to tomorrow:

1 - Whining about the refs, which will go right back in their faces since they say all Michigan does is complain about officiating and Tre has even told me Izzo will never use refs as an excuse - that the team should have never put themselves in that position.

2 - State fans saying "We still got you in 12 of the last 14." Live in the now boys, live in the now.

3 - Tre saying, "Too bad Jethro said this wouldn't be a big win since we weren't top 10." Well, after you claimed you absolutely should be in the top ten and told me it was a huge stretch when I called you on it, I'll consider a small hair away from being a very big win.

So thanks State fans, for taking away all your talk before you could even get there. My next question, are you still elite? Hahahaha. Yeah, I know I would have been quiet as a church mouse had Ager hit that last 3, but he didn't so here I am. We don't get many chances to talk trash like this in hoops, so I have to make the most out of it.

Sat, Jan 28 Penn St. Sat, Feb 4 at Northwestern

We don't get many chances to talk trash like this in hoops, so I have to make the most out of it.We're still elite. Upsets happen.

No matter what you think about the refs....just remember Davis got a gift when he fell down and they called Brown. That was the worst call of the game and probably the most critical.

Sims is horrible. I hate him. Kick him off the team. Coleman was huge. Never thought he could play as well as he did.

Just to be fair, I expect State to blow the doors off the place on Feb 18 when Michigan visits E. Lansing. I'm pretty sure they will be plenty pissed. Now if Sims can show up, Abram plays, and Harris does a little better than 1-11, we might still be able to hang in that one, too.

So if Michigan is only the 6th or 7th best team according to professor Tre, then what does that make MSU?

Good defense of the homecourt Wolverines (very important in Big Ten play), great atmosphere @ Crisler. Bad refs and all State should've come with more. Now go get yourselves in the tourney and we'll see ya at the Bres. [smilie=shame.gif]

Obviously a HUGE win for Michigan. They went into a lull during the mid part of the first half and finished the first half somewhat strong. I swear a different team came out of the locker room in the second half. They were intense, aggressive, and poised. They played like a team who "could be a sleeper for the Final Four". The defense was in State's grill and they would not back down, all shots were contested, and rebounds were secured. The offense looked fluid and Horton (23pts, 5 ast, 4 reb, 8-8 FTs) was the engine. I've got to give mad props to [smilie=not-worthy.: Ron Coleman and Chris Hunter. (Hunter 13 pts, 5 reb, 2 blk and Coleman had 9 big points on 4-5 shooting with 2 steals) Those two have been ripped by many Michigan fans (including myself) and stepped up BIG TIME. Coleman filled in admirably for Lester and forced State to respect him as a threat. Hunter was a force on D swatting away and contesting plenty of shots as well as knocking down the big 3, finishing around the basket, and making clutch free throws down the stretch. Much props.

Question of the night-Why did Tom Izzo call that timeout before the Ager 3? Michigan was obviously scrambling and MSU was bound to get a good look. He'll be kicking himself for that one. [smilie=duh.gif]

Let's look and see what this win does for Michigan. They will be ranked in the next top 25 poll, now have a great chance to make the NCAA tournament, and if they beat Wisconsin on Saturday, they will be in first place in the Big Ten and have a legitamate shot at the Big Ten Championship. "Officiating, I question," Izzo said. "The 34-10 discrepancy really hurt us. It didn't cost us the game, or cause the turnovers.

"I'm sitting here crying about the officiating. I did not like the way it was called. But I'm allowed to dispute that without getting personal," he said.

As stated this game reminded me too much of the UM vs IU games in years past.

I didn't watch much of the game because the Pistons game stole my attention. So, I missed about %90 of those foul calls and can't comment on the difference there.

But why did they not call a tech, flagrent or something on Petway for that cheap shot? He basically pulled a Kobe and stuck out his elbow on Ager because they got dunked on. That call seems to be overlooked a lot.

Artermis
01-26-2006, 09:08 AM
I felt they ran into each other and at the end, Petway's elbow came up, but did not make contact, but I am a Michigan fan, so my view of the situation is somewhat bias, same as when MSU people talk about it.

You'll be in the top 25 if you beat Wisconsin. Lose to Wisconsin and there's a chance you stay at 27. It was a good win for the Blue and a great first-step but Michigan needs to keep on winning. It'll all be for nothing if they end up finishing .500 in the BigTen.

Has anyone seen big Tre today? I wonder if his elementary students are having a bad day dealing with the rath of the doc. I'm sure anytime a kid has a question he responds with "but the refs screwed us" or "god I can't believe he called that on Trannon, he got mostly ball." However, the guy I really feel the worst for is Tom Izzo. It has been a long time since I've seen a guy make such an ass out of himself and slightly tarnish himself. I don't think there is a person on this planet that watched the game that will not agree with the statement of.........The officiating was horrible! But for any state fan or Tom Izzo himself to say that Michigan got all the calls is ridiculous. I think everyone saw Paul Davis fall down by himself and get rewarded with two free throws and there were a few scrums where no calls were made and the play where Ron Coleman was slapped in the back of the head was clear, but maybe if the Sparties hadn't settled for so many jump shots the free throw discrepency wouldn't have been so big. I personally hate Michigan State with a passion, but I've always respected their program and Tom Izzo, but to be that much of an ass at the press conference was uncalled for and not very Tom Izzo like. I wish the Sparties all the success in the world the rest of the season and I hope that Tre comes out of hiding and owns up to what happened last night. Peace out!

^minutes have nothing to do with it though. I don't know whether the calls were bad or not, but if you have 4 fouls you have to play passive. You can stay on the floor by not being aggressive, so minutes do not corilate to bad/good foul calls.

Michigan was more aggressive than MSU, and outplayed them on defense. Perhaps if MSU wasn't in foul trouble, they would have played as aggressive. I don't know. But those fouls were DEFINATELY a factor. Whether or not they were fair calls is for you to debate. I didn't see much of the game, so I won't debate the calls themselves.

MSU had 10 free throw attempts, UoM 34.

MSU had 2 misses by Delco Rowley, UoM had none. You have no one near as bad at FT's as him.

So out of realistic attempts MSU missed 2 FT's, not bad.

I think that MSU was very disadvantaged by the refs, but can't be excused. We stopped the fast break, started doing the UoM half court, and forgot how to play D. We never had an inside guy, everyone was floating outside.

Why don't you ask Tyler Coppenrath, Sean May, Shelden Williams, Alex Laughton and Randolph Morris just how soft Paul Davis is when he was dropping 15 and 10 on them game after game in the Dance last year.

Or is a player's toughness only determined on some obscure Wednesday in January? :))

I guess Ill post my comments on the game now that it has finally sunk in.

All in all, you cant blame the refs. There were missed calls on both sides all game long. MSU lost this game at halftime. They lost the killer instinct and agressiveness that got them the lead in the first half.

Until MSU can prove that it can CONSISTENTLY SCORE through the entire game and not have stupid 4-6 minutes lapses with no baskets, this team will underachieve.

Petway is a punk, plain and simple. That was pretty harsh, even for Big T1e1n standards.

On a side note, is there a better conference for basketball right now? Any team (except PSU and Northwestern) can win any night. I fucking love it@!

One big difference here though MUHME, when Michigan football fans bitch about unfair treatment by the refs or whatever other outside force, the rest of the Big Ten mocks said Michigan fans.

But the rest of the Big Ten was nodding in agreement with Michigan State fans about the unfair treatment in the game last night. That alone should tell you something.

Here are a few quotes from the Illini board about the officiating last night and keep in mind that Illinois benefited big time from MSU losing that game.

"Just checked CBSportsline for standard referree incompetence. They indicate 13-4 fouls in favor of the home team. Regardless, MSU with the lead."

"The refs are calling a bunch of super touch fouls on MSU's big men (though not calling it the same way on the other side). Davis has 3 fouls (trannon and gray both have 2) and has been on the bench for a lot of the half.
Refs are keeping UM in it"

"23 fouls called on MSU, 9 on UM. Free Throws 26-6 in favor of UM. That's not even fair. Refs have handed it to UM"

"scUM is shooting 40% and is leading by 4 over a MSU squad shooting 51%. Lots of FTs for scUM though."

"God damn, that's a lot of free throws! Are these ACC refs taking care of Coach K's boy tonight??? My God! Tell me Izzo's gotten a T. There's no way he hasn't gotten ringed up for one!"

"Pathetic officiating...."

"Officials have done all they can to give Michigan this game, it's quite hilarious to watch. "

" Izzo just started laughing with about 10 minutes left. Nothing more he could do."

"I mean, there has to be some sort of BT conspiracy to get as many teams in as possible.

Winning on the road in the Big Ten is turning out like one of those "No Freaking Way" games for Nintendo where the game will not let you win."

"I hope those *******s in Ann Arbor don't think they actually deserved that win. I mean, Jesus Christ, that's a ****load of free throws!"

"That's not gonna keep me from saying that Michigan State didn't get screwed."

"It's certainly a game that was handed to Michigan on the foul line, nevertheless."

"Winning on the road in the Big Ten is next to impossible. It has become a joke. I'm surprised the Big 10 hasn't done anything about it. I guess it's all about keeping the home fans / paying customers happy!"

Yeah because only UM fans thought the refs in the bowl games were shitty. I mean we didnt have like a ton of guys from other sites come and say how bad it was after that game.

Keep up the whining. Makes me feel good. MSU got either transition baskets or settled for jump shots. You guys didnt drive all night. keep up the blaming on the refs for the 6 minutes of not putting the rock in the whole.

I LOVE MSU PEOPLE WHINING ABOUT THE REFS!!!!!!!!!!

...and do me a favor and I called valenti on this (jack, I think you are the same one from SI board, and I assume that is where you got the illini stuff) take all the illini stuff not just some of it. Their fans were calling MSU a joke as well!

ya know what...I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR ONE FUCKING WORD COME FOOTBALL SEASON ABOUT THE ARROGANT WHINEY BITCHING MICHIGAN FOOTBALL FAN because you fucking Spartans are in the same boat with us....AND ONE MORE THING...Stop with the fucking WAIT UNTIL BASKETBALL SEASON...BECAUSE BASKETBALL SEASON IS HERE AND YOU FUCKING LOST!!!!

"Izzo has never complains about the refs in postgame....and Ive never blamed a game on the refs...until now. Un****ing believeable. Its hard to win on the road when 4 of your starters all have 4 fouls with 10 minutes remaining. No, you've understood me perfectly. When the rest of the big Ten mocks your bitching, you're probably making a fool of yourself and barking up a non-existent tree.

But when everyone agrees with your complaints, even those who may benefit from your misfortune...it means you probably have a pretty valid complaint.

That's all fine and great MUHME. If the free throw attempts margin was just 13 like it was when Indiana came to Breslin, MSU would've won in Ann Arbor a few days ago. Great example.

In the game on Wednesday, MSU had 6 more made field goals, 4 more made three point shots and shot a better percentage from -both- and they lost the game. lol. Since you're in a research mode, try finding another game where THAT happened....and while you're at it, try finding one other game in the nation this year, where a team had five players with four or more fouls called on them.

The difference is this. When Michigan State loses 99% of the time, I blame them. When Michigan loses 99% of the time, you blame someone or something else.

Let me twist it, after all your whining and crying in the past, how can you complain about me whining when I've done so ONCE? I don't blame you for throwing the "don't whine" Tre slogan back at me. I wanna respond to Art's post in the "Let's end it" thread that has since been locked.

Art, you posted that Tre should take a page out of my book and have some class. Essentially you were asking him to be more gracious in defeat. In this case I would implore you to take your own advice concerning victory. While berating him you use phrases such as "Straight up Motherfucking Pussy" and you instruct him to "Get his Balls back from his girlfriend." I fail to see the class in these comments, especially speaking towards his girlfriend (personal matter) of whom you know nothing about.

Whatever statements or excuses are made it seems unproductive and childish as a whole to simply resort to name-calling. I am curious, were you happier that Michigan won or that the win provided the chance to poke fun at Tre. I would hope it was the former, but since you've become so upset with not being able to bash on Tre after the game I wonder if it was the latter.

This is the third Michigan fan here on WTF to hand MSU a win in the next MSU/UM battle. I don't get it. I thought you guys were hyped about your squad and the possibilities? It sounds like one of those bail out type of situations. Kindof like in football this year when all the Wolverines said that State was going to kill them. You predict a blowout for the other team, so if it happens you can say, "What's the big deal, I said it would happen." And if it doesn't happen, you can run your mouths. Being objective and giving an honest prediction is one thing.

Predicting your team will get blown out when you were talking trash just weeks ago is LAME. [smilie=cheer.gif]
