View Full Version : Your car
DrRay11 01-17-2006, 03:59 PM Post pics/brag/whatever about your car here. Now I still have my first car, which is an Olds Intrigue (underrated fucking company, too bad they had to go) purchased for 6800. It comes with decent speakers, and I've added on some subwoofers. Haven't had a problem yet (knock on wood) and it drives very well. My sister has had a hell of a lot of problems with her Mercury Sable, capped off today when she was told her gas tank needed replacement. So I thought I'd make a thread.
Anyone else want to share?

I always regret not leasing my car, and buying it instead :(
UncleCliffy 01-17-2006, 10:27 PM I'm definately going to buy my car. I just can't picture myself spending money month after month and then the car isn't yours not to mention that you can only drive a certain amount of miles. I guess its cool with Mercedes/Bmw to buy because they do 150k miles and they still drive like new. I'm at over 150k and the car is still going strong and the good thing is I don't have a monthly payment :) Get a diesel Mercedes. Car will go 500k miles without a problem. They are insane... They just re-introduced them in the US.
UncleCliffy 01-17-2006, 10:32 PM Stuttgart,Germany - USA/Auto Spectator -Jun 09, 2005 -- Even one full month after the spectacular world records for diesel engines over distances of 50,000 miles (80,467 kilometres), 100,000 kilometres and 100,000 miles (160,934 kilometres) at 224.823 km/h*, these vehicles continue to demonstrate their ability to perform. First the Mercedes-Benz E 320 CDI handled a 1,039-mile(1,672-km), USAC** monitored test drive without refuelling. The average fuel consumption for the trip was 4.75 litres per 100 kilometres. Now measurements carried out under the supervision of the German Technical Inspection Authority (TÜV) on an exhaust roller dynamometer test bench confirm that the diesel particulate filter has maintained its full functionality despite the enormous demands set by the world record bid...
Car ran for a month straight and did 100k miles and it still is like new. No car can do this. No need to lease a MB when they last forever.

Simple issue:
Drive over 18,000 per year (and over 15,000 on some vehicles) = buy it.
Drive under 15-18k - lease it, save a TON of money, and ALWAYS drive a car under warranty with no repair costs.
DrRay11 01-17-2006, 10:35 PM I appreciate your logic, Taymelo. I'm going to trust you on that whenever I get a new car.
UncleCliffy 01-17-2006, 10:39 PM Taymelo... I actually thought leasing was better up until a few months ago when I did some calculations.
My car is a good example. I really haven't had much fixing to do (knock on wood). I have no monthly payment and the truth is that most cars don't break very often. Even if it does break down, say it does twice a year at $300 a pop... $600 a year is still a lot cheaper than paying $300 a month PLUS your insurance isn't always high because you have a new car.
Diesel mercedes does 500k miles. The car is a beast.

Taymelo 01-17-2006, 10:52 PM I appreciate your logic, Taymelo. I'm going to trust you on that whenever I get a new car.
Please do trust me - most on this board would agree with that - especially if its a foreign car, and/or offers low mileage per year (bargain with them - sometimes they can throw in a jump from 12,000 - 15,000 or 15,000 - 18,000 - or buy extra miles when you buy the car - usually .$.05 - $.15 cents per mile if you buy the miles when you sign the contract, but $.20 cents per mile if you turn it in over its limit - if they offer this deal, think about what you put on it on average, and buy the extra miles - many contracts also will pay you back for purchased miles you don't use- ask them if they do this.
I used to drive 18-20,000 per year, and leasing sucked b/c it cost like $2,000 to turn the car in - $2,000 for nothing, just extra miles driven - doesn't include downpayment on new car - you pay them to take the car away from you, and then pay them again to get a new carr.
I owned (financed) and drove a:
http://www.theautochannel.com/media/photos/bmw/1997/97_bmw_528i.jpg
It was a great car, but after 18,000 miles (after 1 year - it was used), I had to pay for all repairs, and repairs on a foreign car are EXPENSIVE (ask anyone).
For example, the motor on my rear passenger window went out, and it was $570.00 to fix - probably $200 for an american car)
And then leased all my cars with warranties running through the entire lease (check into that, too - don't lease 3 years with a 48,00 lease if you will drive 48,000 miles in 2 1/2 years).
But now I drive the Saab shown in this thread. This is my second one of the same model, and I love it for the price I paid on someone else's GM plan (also look into that - my plan was some random secretary at my office's random aunt - she gave it to me for free - and my payment went from $490 loaded with a Harmon Kardon stereo and air conditioned seats to $299 per month loaded w/o the premium stereo and air conditioned seats).
Taymelo 01-17-2006, 10:55 PM Taymelo... I actually thought leasing was better up until a few months ago when I did some calculations.

If you buy it new and have a warranty, and/or get lucky and have no repairs.
But see my above post about what happens if you have repairs.
BTW: I didn't even mention the worst part. My engine on my BMW 528 overheated b/c of a bad thermostat, and I ended up having to pay for engine issues, such as a blown gasket. Thousands of dollars on top of my monthly payment of like $460 to purchase the car.
Clearly, my Saab at $299 is much less, and no matter what goes wrong, I'm covered - I'll always only have to pay the monthly payment and nothing more no matter whether its electrical, engine, transmission, window engine, air conditioning, or other problems.
UncleCliffy 01-17-2006, 11:09 PM Buy a used car thats a few years old and you'll save huge money. I think "fixing a car" is being grossly exaggerated. My family drives American cars and they rarely need to be fixed.
I bet you can get a 3 year old Impala with 30k miles for $11k. The only way I think leasing is beneficial is because some people ALWAYS WANT TO HAVE A NEW CAR! Otherwise, its a huge money drain.

No reason to buy new...my vue was 1 year old with 9,000 miles. It was $30,000 on the sticker new. I think i payed like 16,000. Still got 2 years under the factory warranty. And no one knew i bought it used unless you looked at the odometer.
UncleCliffy 01-17-2006, 11:23 PM Wow thats quite a deal. I agree and I'm still having a tough time trying to explain to taymelo that cars rarely break down unless you drive a Kia.
Taymelo 01-17-2006, 11:25 PM I have no monthly payment.
Well, sometimes non-greek, non-rich motherfuckersl have to finance a vehicle to purchase it - they put down a big downpayment and pay higher monthly payment than a lease, for a longer period of time, have no warranty - and the car's worth less than you owe on it when its time to trade in or sell.

99% of cars lose the most they will ever lose in the 1st year. All the more reason to buy used. However, you typically don't get good lease deals used, b/c its based on residual value - and see above - the car loses a ton of residual value in the first year, so it is actually cheaper to lease new than used.

Kia < Poop
Even if someone was worried about it breaking down .... they could take the 5 - 8 grand they got buying used a year or 2 old and buy the extended warranty.
Oh well. Some people have enough money to waste it. Personally i do not

1. Any great car - Mercedes, BMW, Porsche or otherwise, runs the risk of breaking down - even if the risk is low, the repair is very high - its a real, very real, gamble.
2. Moreover, extended warranties only cover SOME things, and not others - not electrical problems and other engine and other issues, so my $570 motor on my rear passenger power window would not be covered, under any circumstances, and I was forced to pay $570 on top of my monthly payments, and then another $3,000 for engine repairs relatied to the overheating - even though they told me to drive the car while it was overheating, causing the most expensive problem - they would only work with me so much.
I'm only speaking from my experience - if you're a gambler, buy a european car used, and hope it doesn't break down - great cars, prestigious, run great. look nice, etc., but are a bitch and 1/2 to fix - its a gamble - if you have money to gamble, great.
3. If you're not a gambler, or don't have $ for additional repairs on top of a monthly payment that is higher than a lease, and don't drive over 15 - 18 k miles mer year, lease on someone else's X, G, A, or other plan, it is without a doubt the best way to go.
If you'r a gambler, be like Cliffy and buy a Mercedes/BMW. Great cars, run great, reliable, but if/when they break, a bitch and 1/2 to pay to fix.
UncleCliffy 01-17-2006, 11:40 PM Taymelo...
I have a feeling you lease everything your house HA HA!
Why would anyone lease a used car? and stop with this warranty/fixing the car stuff
We have a mechanic that we trust and he fixes the cars whenever they break. My dad has a 10 year old American car that hasn't had one problem. The only thing he's done is put new tires/brakes. Cars hit 100k without a problem right now. He's also paying insurance on a 10 year old car which is a lot cheaper than a new car. You never factor the insurance rate which is going to be $500 year cheaper at least...
For the MB, we fix it at a Mercedes shop on woodward and 13 mile... All he fixes is MB and sells used cars but they are all top notch. Honest guy. If you fix things at a dealership, you will get raped no matter if its Honda, Jaguar, Ford... Those bastards charge you $100 just to look at it.

You'll probably get lucky with the Mercedes - but if you don' t, don't come crying to me for repair money. I'll just refer you to NQ, anyway.
robcat911 01-17-2006, 11:42 PM Yea Saturns extended warrantys cover EVERYTHING that the factory warranty does. I dont know about other companies. Saturns known for their service and such, so maybe thats why iv had such a good experience with my first used car.
Oh well.....different strokes....different folkes....

Naw, just the cars - and electronic shit on credit cars, of course.
Already mentioned. Been through the hot ass BMW with no warranty. $460 per month with several thousands of dollars in repairs w/in a 2 year period. Sold for what I paid for it - and had no downpayment for the new car.
[quote]We have a mechanic that we trust and he fixes the cars whenever they break.
Always good to have a mechanic - and always tougher with euro cars - you dad drives american though, big difference - even if no mechanic "in the family" repairs are relatively cheap.

Yes, you can get a good deal on service, but parts are still twice what american parts are.
UncleCliffy 01-17-2006, 11:54 PM Yeah but Parts are usually cheap. Its the excessive labor rates that kill everything. I'm not sure how much mechanics get paid but I bet they don't even see half of the $100 hr they charge.
WTFchris 01-18-2006, 09:49 AM I got wrecked by my extended warrenty on my S-10 I had. I had bad lifters that had to be replaced (under warrenty at a dealers), and they must have done something wrong because a couple months later my bearing slipped and wrecked the crank. It spewed metal fragments throughout the engine. I took it back to another dealer near me and they refused to put in a new crank kit because they didn't want to be liable for an entire engine if that didn't fix it. A new crank was all the warrenty company would approve. So my choice was to take my chances with the crank or cover the cost of a new engine minus the crank kit. I had to pay 2 grand for a new engine even though I had already paid thousands of dollars for an extended warrenty. What a piece of shit that was. My ass was sore for months. And I tried everything I could to not pay (my father in law is a lawyer) too.
The truck looked sweet (Black 1999 S-10 Zr2 off road), but mechanically it was a piece of shit. I'll never buy another chevy truck (my dad went thru 5 starters in his). I'm sure every company has problems with certain vehicles, but that really stung.
I'll take my chances without an extended warrenty from now on. Live and learn I guess.
WTFchris 01-18-2006, 09:53 AM Yeah but Parts are usually cheap. Its the excessive labor rates that kill everything. I'm not sure how much mechanics get paid but I bet they don't even see half of the $100 hr they charge.
Yeah, they don't get paid that much. Maybe 30 bucks an hour if they've been there a while. I always take my car to Tuffy, Bell Tire or some place like that if I have a problem. They do free inspections and estimates before you are on the hook for anything. And they are always cheaper than the dealership too. If it's the engine, then they'll send you to the dealers, but you can just go to a regular mechanic and already know what the problem is in a lot of cases.
BTW, AAA is a great thing to have. The towing is worth it, you get 2 for 1 Piston tickets, 5 bucks off at Comerica Park, discounts at hotels, and at Bell Tire...and the thing is only 40 bucks a year. One towing pays for it (or a flat tire, etc), not to mention all the discounts I mentioned.
I agree, AAA is a definate good thing especially if you have an older car or are an unresponsible college student (saved my ass all kinds of cash when I drove my heap in college).
Family mechanics are the way to go. My brother in law (been in the family since I was 3) is a mechanic and I only pay part costs (at a discount) and a bit of time to help him out with anything that takes longer than an hour.
I've had my car (Mustang) payed off for at least 2 years now. Had to get a new engine just recently, about $850, (the head developed a small fissure and coolant was slowly leaking into the piston shaft, one day the water pump gave out, the car overheated and the crack in the head widened and caused some wierd shit) but that was the first time I had to put any real money into the car in a seriously long time.
