View Full Version : 72 wins is not realistic
It would be nice, but they'd have to only have 5 losses in the second half of the season as well. I just can't imagine the Pistons keeping this type of execution up throughout the entire year. At some point, they have to lose more than one game in a row.
Think of how unrealistic it is to firmly believe any team can only lose 10 games in an entire season. 10 games in 82. Only 10 losses throughout, what, 5 West Coast trips? How many back-to-backs on weary legs?
I think the media is really doing the Pistons a disservice by continually thrusting 72 wins in their face. They're setting them up to fail. If they don't reach 70 wins now, we'll feel a little bit let down after having to hear about it all season long.
Mikey 01-17-2006, 11:13 AM I say 66.

There is only one West Coast trip left (and its rather wimpy) unless you count one game in Minnesotta as a "trip".
There are a ton of back-to-backs left though (13 sets, or 26 games). Jan 31st - Feb. 8th is particularly harsh with 6 games in 8 days (3 consecutive back-to-backs seperated by one day each).

It's well-known that MOLA's thoughts change outcomes.
It is.
I was gonna start a "When will we lose two in a row?" thread, but I guess I won't.
Nor should it be a goal. We need to finish one game better than the second best team. We got to hope that SA, Dallas, PHX and Co can beat up on each other enough so we can cruise control near the end of the season to rest our guys - so not only will we have home court advantage, but we'll be well rested, while the others scrap to the end for play-off seeding.
As good as we have played, SA only has nine losses themselves, Dallas only ten. And we have three games on hand - so the best case scenario(no losses in those three extra games) means we only have four games up on the Spurs.

-NoQuarter- 01-17-2006, 08:21 PM All homerishness aside, I don't think it's outlandish to think that this team will win 72 games.
It's all up to if they feel like going for it or not.
Can this team keep up this pace? That's some bullshit that fans of other teams say to make themselves feel better. We've only seen the beginning from this squad. We have a brand new coach, a whole new offensive scheme, and our bench players are just now beginning to click, and they're fuckin 30-5!!!
If you think you've seen the best of this team, think again.
Anthony 01-17-2006, 10:26 PM I agree with NQ.
But I dont think 70 is going to happen.
But fact is, this team has been sleep walking though most of those 30 wins. They've only turned it on for a little bit during the season. This team is going to be scarry good.
Taymelo 01-17-2006, 11:16 PM I'm not saying it can't or won't be done... but
Problems - 4 games in 5 nights and other scheduling issues:
1/31 New Jersey
2/1 - vs. Minnesota, 7:30 PM
2/3 - at Philadelphia, 8:00 PM
2/4 - at Indiana, 8:00 PM
2/24 - at Chicago, 8:30 PM
2/26 - vs. Cleveland, 12:00 PM
2/27 - at Cleveland, 7:00 PM
3/1 - at Denver, 9:00 PM
And 4 games in 6 nights:
1/22 - vs. Houston, 6:00 PM
1/24 - at Minnesota, 8:00 PM
1/25 - vs. Milwaukee, 7:30 PM
1/27 - vs. Memphis, 8:00 PM
4/14 - at Toronto, 7:00 PM
4/16 - vs. New York, 6:00 PM
4/17 - at Milwaukee, 8:00 PM
4/19 - vs. Washington, 7:30 PM
How about 5 games in 7 nights:
2/7 - at Atlanta, 7:00 PM
2/8 - vs. LA Clippers, 7:30 PM
2/10 - at Orlando, 7:00 PM
2/12 - at Miami, 3:30 PM
2/14 - vs. New Jersey, 7:30 PM
2/21 - vs. Atlanta, 7:30 PM
2/23 - vs. Indiana, 8:00 PM
2/24 - at Chicago, 8:30 PM
2/26 - vs. Cleveland, 12:00 PM
2/27 - at Cleveland, 7:00 PM
70 wins?
Delfino, Mo, and Arroyo better come through (Hunter, too, if he ever comes back and gets regular season minutes).
-NoQuarter- 01-17-2006, 11:26 PM I personally don't give a shit about 70 wins. It'd be nice, but I want the 'chip and a severe and brutal raping of Miami in the ECF.
My only point is this team is most certainly capable of it, and I laugh my ass off when people wonder if they can keep this level of play up for the rest of the year. This isn't some fluke run. The scariest part is that this is a team that's still not in top form yet.
Train Wreck 01-18-2006, 12:04 AM 70 wins isn't going to happen but we are almost at the point (Maybe we already are) where barring any injury's for us, Miami could win every game the rest of the year and still not catch us.
That, my friends, is scary.

70 wins may or may not happen - not 72 for sure. But as long as they are healthy, on a nice run, and confident going into the playoffs, it will be better than last year, where we should've won in 6 and almost won in 7.
Either way, we've got home court through the Eastern Conference, at the very least - a nice advantage > last year, where we won in Miami in game 7, and then went right to SA with tired legs/minds.
And I think we'll lock up home court vs. the entire league - whether that's 60 wins, or 63, or 65, or 67, or 70.
Either way, as long as this tean doesn't overlook an early playoof matchup - they're nearly a lock to win it al.
On that one: Anyone going to Vegas that can place a bet on my Pistons to win it all?

Anthony is that you?
It's a little too late to bet on the Pistons in Vegas. The odds are like 8-5 right now in Vegas. I love this team and am very confident but I'd need at least 2-1 for me to put my money down.
H1Man 01-18-2006, 03:39 AM Our goal should be securing homecourt advantage and developing the bench not going for 70 wins. I am sure we could win 70+ games if we really want to but that would mean we would be playing our starters 38+ minutes a night. I would rather win 60 games and have the starters ready and rested than win 70 games and have the starters exhausted going into the playoffs.
Hopefully by the time we get to 70-75 games, homecourt will be decided and we can start resting our starters. I wouldn't mind if our bench got some starts at the end of the season.

I agree. I dont really care if we get 70 as long as we get enough to rape the league. Our starters will be tired if we try to go for that and we will get worn down in the playoffs.

[smilie=not-worthy.:
geerussell 01-18-2006, 10:50 AM The only way I see them hitting 70+ is if SA pushes them to it. If late march comes around and detroit has a 6 or 7 game lead, the bench will get more run and some games will likely get dropped against opponents fighting for their playoff lives.
Even if the Evans and Delfino we saw against boston was a legitimate glimpse of the future and the bench continues to improve and gets more consistent, it'll be tough to get wins against desperate teams in april if there's nothing really at stake for detroit.
Joe Asberry 01-22-2006, 03:49 PM "If these guys were serious, they could win a lot of games," said Ron Harper, a member of the '96 Bulls and now a member of Flip Saunders' staff. "I ain't saying 70, but they could win a lot, if they were serious."
Huh?
"They're not serious," Harper said. "They're the most laid-back group of guys I've ever been around. They would drive (Michael Jordan), Scottie (Pippen) and Phil Jackson crazy. If they played hard every night, you know how good they'd be? They'd blow the league away."
gotta love Harper trying to challenge the guys by quotes like this ! [smilie=applause.gi:
I agree with Harper. Our guys seemingly don't really give a shit right now. Chauncey screws up a last possession basket that would have won a game for us and he's laughing because he almost made a circus shot after the play broke down.
I'm all for having fun playing basketball, but I only hope these guys can flip the switch come crunch time. Their mentailty might help them through these dogs days of the season, however come play-off time I hope they knucke down something fierce.
I wouldn't mind some tight games as well - to let them remember how it feels in high pressure situations. If we run roughshod to the top seed I only hope we don't get a good team(with previous injury issues) in the first round because we could be primed for an upset.
Artermis 01-22-2006, 05:14 PM I think the problem is not many teams are "challenging" them and they are having some fun.
Notice how well they play against SA and Miami, two teams who are supposed to be a challenge. They take their game to another level when they play these buttholes.
Art
Unibomber 01-22-2006, 05:27 PM There are some killer 4-game stretches on that schedule but there is no reason to believe that the Pistons cannot come out with 4 wins in each one.
b-diddy 01-22-2006, 09:53 PM harper's just giving them shit.
if the pistons went out with the mentality that they have to win everygame, they'd have cracked by now. the fact that they dont care is probably their biggest strength.
as for me, if the pistons had like 4 or 5 more losses right now, i'd probably be hardly following the pisons at all. regular season doesnt mean anything once the playoffs begin. but chasing the bulls record is pretty damn entertaining, and i think it will mean alot if we get 70+ wins and win a championship.
H1Man 03-02-2006, 03:55 AM Not that I care but with this loss, we can't break the Bulls record. The best we can do is tie their record.
