View Full Version : What if Hunter was our only backup PG?

Let's assume, for the sake of this thread, that Arroyo gets traded for a future 1st round pick from some team. No other player in return/no expiring contract. Just a future draft pick.

Now that leaves us with Hunter as the backup PG and Acker as the 3rd PG.

Assuming that Hunter is healthy, I think he can play 10-12 minutes a night at the PG spot and we can give the rest to Delfino and Tay. I wouldn't even mind giving Acker some spot minutes once in a while to see what he has to offer.

It also forces the bench to play more because either Delfino or Tay might be seeing some time at the PG spot.

So you guys think having Hunter as the sole backup at PG will hurt us more than it will help us?

Has disaster written all over it. The only way this scenario ever happens is if Arroyo goes down to injury. So yes it would not be good.

I think I would kill myself.

I really don't mind Hunter as our primary back-up, what scared the shit out of me is him as a starter should Billups go down with an injury.

That being said, I'm not really liking Arroyo as our starter either.

It is this reason why I like the idea of acquiring a Mike James as I think he can offer much of the same package as Billups should he be forced to start some games for us.

I think it would be fine. Move Tay to point and bring in Delfino, who can help with the ball handling.

I like that better than Arroyo. I thought it worked great in SA.

Do we want a back-up PG that is basically a mini-Billups?

Or do we want a change of pace guy?

And if we want a change of pace guy do we want a guy like Arroyo, or a guy like Boykins?

Hunter as the only backup would be a train wreck. Billups would have to play 44 mpg.

If we get a change of pace guy, I want someone that is not a liability in half court.

Thought this thread might deserve a bump now.

my only optimistic thought is that Flip's offense seems to be oportunistic enough that we don't need Lindsey to rack up the assists to be effective. if he can keep the ball moving, limit turnovers, and provide defense that Arroyo could never do....then it might not be bad. but i still remember geting so frustrated with Lindsey when he'd dribble around, and end up taking a fadeaway jumper himself when he couldn't find an open man.

my big concern is that Lindsey missed half a season to injury. who knows if that means a). he might re-injure himself and be out the rest of the season or b). he'll lose quickness which is a huge part of his game.

a bright spot is that Delfino seems confident in handling the ball himself and seems to know how Flip's offense is supposed to run. maybe this is a chance for Flip to use Delfino more....in a mutli-purpose role, playing both guard positions. tay could bring the ball up too. didn't he do that pretty well, when Arroyo was suspended a game?

well i think its fair to say if the orlando deal goes through that joe d will still be looking for a backup PG. I hope he has someone in mind. May as well let Acker play a few minutes in game until then. like 4 mins of Acker, 8 of Lindsey, leaves us at around 36 for Billups which is around what he's been playing.

Here is a list possible back up PG's either via FA, last years of deal or waivable because of last year status...

FA's:

Eisley, Green, Jay Williams, Wagner, Frank Williams, Pack and Erik Strickland.

Last year or two of deal close to 8 million in salary or thereabout trade wise:

Terry, Miller, Fisher,

Waivable:

McInnis, Lue, Delk, Armstrong, Sura, Anderson, Claxton, Norris.

Hoepfully we make a run at one of those Denver PGs.

What if he was?

I'd give a nod to Delfino.

He'd back up Billups for most of the season.

Come playoff time, Hunter is our man.

Assuming we made no moves, I'd take Gibson out of Texas or even make a trade down.

Billups = Shooter, can slash, passer, good defense

Lindsay = Can't shoot, can't pass, can't slash, great pressure defense.

Thats a pretty big change of pace IMO. I don't see why we need a 3rd style of PG. Give me someone who can hit an outside shot. Let Delfino or no one slash (since thats how our 1st squad usually opperates anyway) for all I care.

I want a guy more like Billups. We don't need a change of pace guy. We need a guy that can hit open shots and play defense. That's it.

I don't mind Hunter as a backup, but we're screwed if Billups goes down for sure.

not to mention Lindsey's coming off surgery......he's not 100% reliable, imo. i'm hoping/trusting/praying that JoeD doesn't make a deal unless we get a PG in return somehow.

Question: How many minutes has Arroyo averaged in the last 5 games?

Answer: 7.8 minutes

He only averges 12 minutes for the entire season!

Hunter can have 5 of them and give Delfino the other 7 and call it a day.

IF Billups got hurt then Hunter might have to play 10 minutes, while Delfino and Evans play more and Prince handles the ball more.

But if Billups goes down we're screwed either way. There is no way Arroyo can handle 30 minutes.
