View Full Version : Chucky Atkins rumor
Glenn 01-12-2006, 10:35 AM Straight up for Arroyo would make some sense. Chucky has an expiring deal.

Teams pursue Wizards' Atkins
By John N. Mitchell
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Published January 12, 2006
A number of teams have shown interest in Washington Wizards reserve guard Chucky Atkins.
According to a Western Conference general manager who spoke under condition of anonymity yesterday, the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Memphis Grizzlies and another Western Conference team have spoken with Wizards president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld about trading for Atkins.
Grunfeld, as is his policy, did not comment on any potential personnel moves. The Wizards have until the Feb. 23 trade deadline to make a move.
Atkins, who has started just two games this season for the Wizards, was not with the team for the second game in a row; he was in Orlando, Fla., where his wife, Monica, gave birth to a son, Joel.
Atkins, acquired with Caron Butler from the Los Angeles Lakers in August in exchange for Kwame Brown and Laron Profit, voiced displeasure earlier this season with his playing time and said he wanted to be traded. Atkins started all 82 games for the Lakers last season and averaged 13.6 points and 4.4 assists a game. However, he has played a more limited role behind Gilbert Arenas and is averaging 6.7 points and 2.5 assists in 19.7 minutes.
New York is believed to be extremely interested in Atkins. He played for Knicks coach Larry Brown in Detroit, and he could be inserted alongside Stephon Marbury, who has said he would prefer to play shooting guard rather than the point.
Memphis is looking for a point guard to replace the injured Damon Stoudamire. In Detroit, Atkins would provide depth behind guards Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups.
Atkins is in the final year of a contract that is paying him $4.5 million this season.
FUCK YEAH! I would LOVE this! Trade Arroyo for a Chucky rental. Off the books next year and no more bullshit 4 handcheck fouls in one quarter getting the team into foul trouble.
I'll always have love for Chucky after that baseline tear-drop last second winner that Coleman goaltended in the playoffs vs Philly in 03.
yargs 01-12-2006, 10:44 AM It would be a coup if the pistons could pull this off. I'm not a huge Chucky Atkins fan but obviously he brings more to the table as a shooter that Arroyo and isn't any worse on the defensive end (although he's not much better if at all).
I also think having Chucky on the floor would help both Tayshaun and Delfino, two guys that often play alongside Arroyo. Both Tayshaun and Delfino excel at taking guys off the dribble and chucky's a guy that doesn't need the ball in his hands in order to be effective. He warrants defensive attention when he doesn't have the ball because he can hit the open shot.
Granted the pistons would still struggle keeping guys out of the lane at the PG spot but that won't really pose a problem until they face parker and the spurs in the finals.

Arroyo, Milicic safely on roster... for now
SAN ANTONIO — We all know what to expect Thursday night.
Big Ben is gonna get double-digit rebounds and play pin-the-ball-on-the-backboard with a few San Antonio shots. Tim Duncan is gonna go off for 20 points and 10 rebounds - maybe by halftime. And of course, Tony Parker will score in the paint - a lot. And Manu Ginobili will flop - a lot.
Well, I'm here to tell you what - or rather, who - you won't see: Carlos Arroyo and Darko Milicic.
Little Carlos won't play because he'll be serving a one-game suspension for making contact with official Rodney Mott in Tuesday's win over the Hornets.
Darko won't play because, well, he's Darko.
I mention both of these guys for a number of reasons.
For starters, they are the two most likely players to be traded by the Feb. 23 deadline. I don't anticipate either being moved, but if the Pistons do make a deal, chances are one or both of these guys would be involved. One of the reasons why they're even under consideration is because they have been inconsistent on a team that thrives on consistent play.
Look at Arroyo's last game.
He made some really big shots and some nice passes against the Hornets. But he also got torched by the Hornet's ultra-quick guards, Chris Paul and Speedy Claxton. And the way he reacted after picking up his sixth foul, in a close game on the road ... you just can't do that, especially if you're a point guard.
Even with that said, Arroyo is still a guy that a lot of teams would love to have.
Why, you ask?
Because he's a great passer who loves to get his teammates involved, qualities that are rare in today's playmakers who care more about padding their points total than passing. There are a number of teams that have kept tabs on Arroyo this season. Among them are the Los Angeles Lakers, the New York Knicks, and Seattle, teams that, if they could swing a deal for Arroyo, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

WTFchris 01-12-2006, 11:15 AM I'd do it. Chucky's defense is about the same, but as Yargs pointed out he's a spot up shooter. He'd be a better fit to stretch the defenses for Delfino, Prince and RIP (whatever combination is out there). Not to mention his contract is better.
Glenn 01-12-2006, 11:17 AM What is there, about a 3 inch height difference?
Chuck is listed at 5-11 but I don't buy that, just as I don't buy that Arroyo is 6-2.
For you cap-heads, how would a deal like this help us with Ben and/or Chauncey? The luxury tax threshold?
Would a deal like this make it more likely that we would use the MLE next year?
GotCrotty? 01-12-2006, 11:29 AM Yea, I think if Joe makes this deal he will realize that he may need to approach luxery tax payroll sooner than later, so he will likely resign atkins and make another Mo evans type pickup because of our lack of a first round pick.
I think one of our starters are going to have to be moved as soon as after this season. I know we boast the best starting five in the league, but we're going to be averaging $10M per starter - and unless Davidson changes his mind about never paying the luxury tax, we simply cannot have that much invested in our starting line-up and have any sort of bench.

Davidson has never said he won't pay the tax. He has only said he wouldn't spend wastefully.

Exhibit A:
He's got a really nice jacket that is still in good shape. No need to replace it.

WTFchris 01-12-2006, 12:07 PM Without looking (which I will do after this post), I don't think we'd be in the tax range unless we extended Darko. That's assuming Ben gets 11 mil starting and Prince gets the 7-8 mil starting. The only tricky part will be when Billups needs an extension. At that point we'd probably be in the tax range since Billups would certainly have earned at least what RIP/Prince are making then.
I'll have to look at the exact numbers, but if Davidson is willing to pay tax for a year or two, Sheed's contract would probably be up anyway. It's also dependant on whether Dyess stays past his contract too.
MOLA1 01-12-2006, 12:29 PM I love Chucky.
Black Dynamite 01-12-2006, 12:29 PM i donbt care if im alone on this but.................hell no!!! :? :x ...fuck atkins and may he never be a piston again. a chucker with worse defense than arroyo who cant pass and turns the ball over too much if you ask him to run the offense.
chauncy gets a free pass of the untimely 3's. i dont need chucky flinging em up something retarded with no real ability to pass whatsoever.
Black Dynamite 01-12-2006, 12:30 PM I love Chucky.
die. :x
Black Dynamite 01-12-2006, 12:32 PM I'd do it. Chucky's defense is about the same,.
thats a lie. have you seen chuckster on defense. arroyo isnt super but by no means is he as bad as chucky

They are both bad defenders. I might even say Chucky plays better defense than Arroyo. At least he tries harder. Arroyo can't stay with anyone and he's a PG. He has no lateral quickness to stay in front of anyone. Neither is any good, face it.
the wrath of diddy 01-12-2006, 01:02 PM Arroyo is garbage in this system. We don't play a fast enough style game to utilize his skills. Shatkins would be a better fit for this jump shot happy offense. Rent Chucky for the rest of the year, let him walk, then use the MLE to get back Mike James, bitch.

chucky gets hot for one game and theres a sudden bandwagon shift.
@wtfchris...if getting more fouls called on him is playing harder defense then i'll take arroyo. otherwise chucky cant even guard arroyo as opposed to him not being able to abuse arroyo unless he takes a chucker 3 off a screen.
i dont know if this is post jon barry syndrome or what. but its sickening to see an atkins fan club. its as if nobody remembers how bad this guy sucked outside of being a "streaky" 3 point shooter. we dont need another guy chucking up 3's. i mean first people complain about how we cant keep winning if we shoot more and more jump shots like this. then they want another jump shooter on the team who cant penetrate and/or dish all that well at all.
i'd see chucky atkins assassinated before i'd tolerate the headaches he gave me in a pistons uniform again.

Arroyo averages more fouls/minute so saying he'll foul more then "handchecker" is straight incorrect. You are right that Chucky can't guard Arroyo, but then again Arroyo can't guard Chucky either.
While I want our starters to shoot less 3s I'd like our bench (other than Arroyo) to get the ball with more than 3 seconds on the clock (which is the only time Arroyo gives it up). One thing Chucky will do is give the ball to other players to let them create. Now honestly, the only player that benefits is Delfino (as no other bencher can create their own, with Delfino that means slash) but the only player Arroyo benefits is Dice and even Chucky can play the pick and roll (especially if the defensive guard has to at least respect the Chucky's shot rather then let Arroyo shoot and watch his ass clank it off the shot clock) so Dice wouldn't suffer from this trade.
So is Chucky the "answer" as our back-up PG? No, but he's better than Arroyo for our team this year and clears the wasted contract that is Arroyo for next year.
Taymelo 01-12-2006, 03:05 PM Fuck Chucky.
Fuck Arroyo.
Bring back Mike James - no, he's not the second coming of a young Gary Payton, but he's not only the best backup pg in the league, but one of the top 15 starting pg's in the league (how many good starting pgs do you think there are out there?)
Black Dynamite 01-12-2006, 03:07 PM like fuck he's better. :x what oppurtunities do you think will open up? maybe for the other teams fast break when he misses a 3 or commits a turnover. all those benefits of him being on defense.
and how on earth are you guys equating atkins=arroyo on defense. that is the biggest bunch of horseshit ever. i'm telling you now, i'll see atkins bleed before i see him in a pistons jersey.

mike james is taking over in toronto. i dont think theres a chance of them letting him go now.
He'll opt out of his contract (which he can do at year's end) and sign somewhere as a starter for good money.

Careful: George W. Bush has been tapping this line ever since Uncle Cliffy signed in from Europe.
The eyes are watching, Gutz. Watching.
WTFchris 01-12-2006, 03:40 PM maybe a mod can add a poll to this to vote on who thinks Arroyo or Chucky is better here.
JickBoy34 01-12-2006, 05:11 PM Fuck Atkins...he is a whiny bitch who if he doesn't get enough PT will bring some disharmony to this team. Everyone is too worried about a guy that will play 4-8 minutes in the playoffs splitting time with Lindsey.

basically. i still remember how chucky felt a chip on his shoulder by us bringing in billups instead of putting our faith in his bitchass. then of course the bigger chip when we shipped him off. good riddens was all i could say. now die chucky die, i want no childs play sequel in motown.

not a mod, but i put a poll up on whether you want Arroyo to stay.
Darth Thanatos 01-12-2006, 11:08 PM I'll pass on Arroyo and James.
b-diddy 01-13-2006, 12:25 AM they changed the tax rules so you dont get excluded from the refund (or whatever you call it) if your over the tax.
with the pistons annually going deep into the finals, davidson would be a fool to not keep this team together as long as he could. a couple million, hell, ten million in tax is still far less than a couple rounds in the playoffs.

Atkins watch?
Don't get too excited about the recent spat of articles out of Washington that indicate the Pistons have interest in reacquiring point guard Chucky Atkins .
Atkins, in the final year of his contract and making $4.5 million, has asked Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld to trade him. His playing time continues to shrink, playing back-up to Gilbert Arenas . He has recently returned to Orlando, Fla., to be with his wife, Monica , who has given birth to a son, Joel .
Grunfeld is trying to accommodate Atkins' request and has called several teams, including the Pistons. The Pistons, though, have not made an offer.
More likely destinations for Atkins are New York, where he would be reunited with coach Larry Brown and probably start to allow Stephon Marbury to move to shooting guard, or Memphis. The Grizzlies need a replacement for Damon Stoudamire , who is idle because of a knee injury.
As much he enjoyed his time in Detroit, Atkins wants to start, and he knows he wouldn't start for the Pistons.
Pistons vice president of basketball John Hammond said on Tuesday that the Pistons were not seeking any trades at this particular time.
http://www.nypost.com/sports/60302.htm
Confirming a Washington report, the Grizzlies indeed are trying to acquire Chucky Atkins from the Wizards with a $4.4M trade exception. Contrary to that same report, the Knicks have expressed no desire to obtain the deadly long-distance shooter. Sources say the Grizzlies also are pressing the Celtics for Mark Blount. Boston wants Lorenzen Wright's expiring contract, not Brian Cardinal's four-year, $26.5 obligation past this season.
