View Full Version : Favorite sports bars
alright guys, we all hit up the sports bars to watch Pistons/Lions/Wings games with buddies.
name a sports bar/pub that you like, description (location, website maybe), hotness of waitresses (always important :D), general atmosphere, TV situation, etc.,
i'll start it off:
C.J. Mahoneys Sports Grille (http://www.cjmahoneys.com/)
Rochester Rd between Auburn and South Blvd.
It's a relatively small restaurant. Raised bar area in the middle with large plasma TV's above (three 72", seven 42"). Booths line up the perimeter with small LCD TVs in each booth. They've got live band nights, Club Keno, WiFi internet, arcade games, and pretty waiteresses. Pretty cool place. It's smaller than places like Buffalo Wild Wings. The nice TV's everywhere make watching the game pretty enjoyable.

They've got a ton of TV's and even a VIP room where you can watch
the game with a group of friends without being in the middle of the bar.
There's no wall or door closing the bar off but it's in it's own little niche.
We watched every Monday night game there last year. It was awesome.
The talent there is decent. Sometimes you'll get the hot waitress that's
nice but not a good waitress and sometimes you'll get the decent waitress
that's super nice and does everything right. I don't think we ever got
both. The service is decent there. Not amazing but not bad by any means.
The best thing about this place is the energy. It's a fun place to be.
^^ nice, mola...
hey do the VIP rooms cost more? are there seperate TVs in there? sounds cool.
MOLA1 01-11-2006, 06:28 PM No. First come first serve. It's a sitting room.
I just call it the VIP room, but you can eat there.
It's like an extension of the bar section. It rocks!
I forgot to add that there's a nice leather couch,
2 lounge chairs and a hightop with 4 stools in there.
2 regular TV's but they're both like 36" and you can tune them to
whatever you want and have your own volume settings in there.
Taymelo 01-11-2006, 09:03 PM The ESPNZone in Manhattan is pretty sweet. The record radio shows there, and its like a Vegas sports betting room - lazy boys and big screens. Also tons of video games and sports games (basketball courts with shooting contests, etc). Fun for the whole family.

BW3's is always a solid choice for Piston's action. the newest locations will usually have great digital projectors and plasmas to watch the game. the BW3's in Ann Arbor has an obscene amount of plasma TV's. Crowds are always into the game, cheering along. Good times.
Black Dynamite 01-16-2006, 11:50 AM buffalo wild wings and espn sportszone in vegas.

I love Mahoneys!! That place is great and I read on their website they are adding a patio! Amazing!!
Places I like in no order:
CJ Mahoneys
Hoops City Grille
Hoops
Docs Sports Retreat
I FUCKING HATE Buffalo Wild Wings more than any other place to watch a game. Their big screens are the worst quality and are basically impossible to see. I prefer a crisp 40 HD than the 90 inch shitball TV's
This should be in the yet-to-be-created Detroit life/culture forum.

have you seen the new BW3's in Canton? it's got projectors that are REAL nice. but yeah....old, washed out projectors are the worst.
Mr B's in Troy has some great food, but their projectors seriously need an upgrade.
theMUHMEshow 01-16-2006, 09:43 PM Naa I have not been out to the canton one yet. I have to go to BW's alot for PA's at work. I have hit the ones in: Mt Clem, Washington, Westland, Southgate, Clinton Twp...and they all pretty much suck ass.
DetTitan 01-16-2006, 10:15 PM being not of legal age in the US, my choices are limited.
I liked Docs, because of the individual TV's. There is a place in Windsor called Dirty Jerseys. Each booth has its own TV, and their food is AMAZING. Buffalo Chicken Pizza , Steakburger Pizza, Honey Garlic Wings...mmmm.
But their game selection is sometimes limited due to blackouts. Man, I can't wait till I am 21.
Artermis 01-16-2006, 10:19 PM Yeah BW3 only place in my town for this kind of stuff.

Vinny 01-16-2006, 11:43 PM Alot of these places have great looking TV's, widescreen Plasmas and the like, but they don't spend the extra money to get the HD service. It's the dumbest thing I've ever seen. They spend a fortune on the TV's and then don't bother with the HD. They just stretch the normal picture out to fill the wider screen and it looks like crap.
You can tell during the commercials because 90% of commercials are not HD so there should be black bars on the sides of the screen.
b-diddy 01-17-2006, 11:31 PM i hate the bw3 in ann arbor.
theres no need to have 80000 tv's.
i can only be interested in 2 games, 3 tops, at a time. anything more than that is just distracting.
but im not a big sports bar guy.
UncleCliffy 01-17-2006, 11:34 PM I'm not a sports bar person either... I prefer to watch the games at home.
I agree on BW3 that they aren't that good for sports. 50 cent boneless wings on Thursday nights ROCK! They have like 50 tvs up and they all suck.
Train Wreck 01-17-2006, 11:39 PM A few of the ones have good TVs now. Canton is one.
I'd also prefer to just have people over for games as well.
Taymelo 01-17-2006, 11:48 PM I'm a big watch it at home on the 60' inch with surround sound/big woofer system.
Fuck sports bars, the only thing worse than the price to spend 3 hours there, are the crowds, smoking, and expensive alcohol costs that are so much cheaper when watching the game at home (and no drunk driving at home, either - big, underrated perk).

I went to a small crappy sports bar a few weeks back to watch the Pistons.
This particular bar has $1 beers during Wings games but not Piston games. Both games were on but we were there to watch the Pistons and had asked them to switch the game to the Pistons near the table we were at.
Yup, you guessed it, $2.50 for our beers because we weren't watching the Wings.
As a lawyer, what advice would you give me to recoup my losses?
i watched game 1 of the tigers vs yankees at a relatively new sports bar in Royal Oak called 24 Seconds (http://www.24seconds.org/).
it's a smallish bar with 12 HD TVs (42" each) around and above the bar. kinda of overkill when the same game is on every screen, but i'd imagine it'd be better when there are multiple games on. there are also two 10 foot screens w/ projectors. viewing the game is definitely not an issue here, since the bar itself is pretty small.

around the bar, there's limited seating. when we got there, it was "find your own seat". we got there pretty early, but there weren't any table with more than two seats. we ended up sitting at the bar. sitting at the bar was ok, but the TVs are perched above you, so you either need to keep your head up to watch or lean back in your seat.
they have a roof top deck, but it was closed. i heard you can watch the game up there, too. that would have been cool.
the food was typical bar food. i had a "jack daniels" burger and it wasn't that great. we also had nachos and wings. both were just average...but then again, i've come to expect that from bar food.
all in all it was a decent place. atmosphere was rowdy and the small size gave the place a kind of a quaint feel to it. they've got live music, karaoke, etc. Parker & The Man (http://www.971fm.com/pages/1832.php) is broadcasted from there on Monday nights (http://www.24seconds.org/events.htm).
note to restaurant owners: a website is great....making a myspace for your bar is probably a good idea, too. but putting the pics of the bar and videos of the bar on the myspace and NOT the original site is probably a bad idea.
bangpow 10-09-2006, 06:34 PM I actually kind of like Cheli's in Dearborn to watch games and even Bailey's in Dearborn isn't bad either.
how's the chili at Cheli's? food in general? i love chili and i was thinking about hitting up Cheli's for one of the next Tiger's game...

The food is decent. I mean, it's nothing really special, but it's not garbage or anything. Which Cheli's were you looking to go to?
