Through his incredible analytical skills, he has now calculated the Pistons to have the best offense in the league.
And the Suns as the best defense in the league.
Darth Thanatos 01-10-2006, 10:44 PM Who?
Mikey 01-10-2006, 10:48 PM I can't believe people actually buy into this shit. It amazes me how this guy has managed to brainwash hundreds of thousands of morons into believing that his stats mean anything.
It's mathematics, not basketball.
I don't follow what he says like it is the gospel, he has an agenda just like every other writer but atleast he is willing to be different.
It gets old seeing recycled opinions jump from media form to media form. Like the whole C.B for MVP talk started with one writer and everyone jumped on like it was their own opinion.
I think a lot of JH's stuff is crap but since it is different I cut him some slack.

b-diddy 01-11-2006, 12:09 AM actually, theres very little math about it.
instead of basing his averages by the game, he did it by the hundred possessions.
i thought his stats were very telling.
Black Dynamite 01-11-2006, 12:13 AM they fluctuate to much and cant really judge the whole league. but his ideas are nothing more than different. not really all that good.
-NoQuarter- 01-11-2006, 12:14 AM Hollinger is also the guy who ranked Memo as the 2nd best center in the league and Ben as the 12th or so at the begining of the year with his "ratings".
zeebneeb 01-11-2006, 12:16 AM Hollinger is also the guy who ranked Memo as the 2nd best center in the league and Ben as the 12th or so at the begining of the year with his "ratings".
I agree he is a moron. His calculator grossly underrates Memo.
H1Man 01-11-2006, 03:47 AM Assume for a second that there is nothing wrong with his rating. The thing that most suprises me is this:
Phoenix, a team known for offense, is #1 in defense.
Detroit, a team known for defense, is #1 in offense.
MoTown 01-11-2006, 09:23 AM Hollinger is nothing more than a nerdy math major who was hired by ESPN to do something different. He really does not understand the game of basketball. If he did, he wouldn't make comments like "stats don't lie." He's not a moron, he's a giant nerd. Plain and simple.
Coming up with a teams offense and defense by simply taking the possesions per game is just plain silly. There are so many more intangibles than that. Offensive rebounding, turnovers created by the DEFENSE, fouls based on slashing, etc. are all things that he fails to take into account. How much of the Pistons great offense comes directly from the defense?
Basically, he is creating a watered down version of shooting percentage here. He is just being a nerd like he has done all of his life. It's ESPN that's stupid by keeping him on the payroll.
b-diddy 01-11-2006, 12:39 PM he's not rating offense/defense, he's rating offense/defense efficiency.
so detroit doesnt have the best offense, but they do score the most points per possession.
phoenix doesnt have the 2nd best defense, its that teams dont score efficiently against them. i'd be interested to see where they ranked last year.
how do you guys feel about pts/shot? waist of time too?
Varsity 01-11-2006, 04:10 PM http://home.comcast.net/~wrathofdiddy/JH.jpg
LMAO. That's hilarious.
Hollinger really does look at the stats and efficiencies too much, but like Jethro was saying, I do like that fact that he's willing to go out there and say things that no one else was saying at the time. Last year, I remember he was the first to say that the Piston's bench would cost them a championship, while no one really paid him any mind. As we all know now, he was right. In this article, while I'm not buying that Phoenix wins because of defense, the fact that opponents shoot poorly says they are doing something right. Teams shot lights on them last year.

Taymelo 01-11-2006, 08:56 PM First, let the record reflect that Diddy stole that shit from me.
Second, I can't believe I'm sticking up for Hollinger even a tiny bit... but all he really is doing is showing another angle in which to look at the teams. I don't think he's saying that his numbers tell the whole story, just that its another way to look at the teams and how they stack up.
-NoQuarter- 01-11-2006, 09:29 PM For those even slightly defending Hollinger, I repeat:
Hollinger is also the guy who ranked Memo as the 2nd best center in the league and Ben as the 12th or so at the begining of the year with his "ratings".

Just because one of his equations are dumb, doesn't mean all his other ones are.

Just because one of his equations are dumb, doesn't mean all his other ones are.
but it does mean that they are all inconsistent to an obvious and sometimes wild extent. so in the long run yes all his equations are out of whack because they all are inconsistent to an extreme level at times.
b-diddy 01-12-2006, 05:35 PM if you want to talk about morons, talk about sharrod barkley.
he said on the radio today that the pistons would probably take a 2007 first round draft pick for darko, because they could use that pick on a guy like greg oden. keep in mind that he had just said that we wont get a top pick for darko, and would be happy with a late lottery.
theres no way in hell joe parleys (sp?) darko into greg oden.
Black Dynamite 09-14-2009, 07:10 PM Who?
Hollinger's come a long way. From nobody to king cunt.
