Michigan's Gutierrez transferring

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan's No. 2 quarterback, Matt Gutierrez, says he is leaving the Wolverines and will play for Idaho State in the fall.

Gutierrez, who has one year of college eligibility remaining, declined to say whether he was promised the starting job for the Division I-AA Bengals but said he was certain he would never supplant Chad Henne as Michigan's top quarterback.

"I feel like in my four years [at Michigan], I've done everything I could have done and was asked to do to earn an opportunity," Gutierrez told The Ann Arbor News on Saturday. "I love to play football. I'm looking forward to being able to work toward that and succeed in that way."

Gutierrez was expected to take over as the Wolverines' starter in 2004 to replace John Navarre, but a shoulder injury kept him out of the lineup. Gutierrez underwent surgery and participated in only three games in the 2005 season as Henne's backup, completing 14 of 22 passes.

Gutierrez, who played quarterback at De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif., said he didn't decide to leave the Wolverines until last week, after the team's Alamo Bowl loss to Nebraska.

Michigan will now have to decide who will become the second-stringer behind Henne.

The apparent choices are Jason Forcier, who redshirted in the 2005 season, or high school recruit David Cone, who is expected to sign a national letter of intent with the Wolverines next month.

Not sure, but I think NCAA rules say that if he didn't want to sit a year he couldn't go to another Division 1A program. Again, not sure, so if someone knows better please say so.

Most Michigan fans will not even bat an eye at this, but trust me folks, this is huge. If Chad Henne goes down, we're stuck with Jason Forcier, a 3 star QB, who's never played a down of college football. If something happens to him, we're left with David Cone, a 2 star sequoia tree, who Michigan offered for some reason. :(

I will be praying hard that Chad stays healthy.

I am glad for Gutz. He had to move down to that level to get a chance to start and have any chance at the Pros.

He is very accurate with an average arm, but abov average smarts and he is a winner. I do not believe he ever lost in HS.

yeah if henne goes down, UM Is in serious trouble.

BTW please do not let the stars fool you, he is actually 3 star some places. David Cone won a state championship in Georgia where he threw the ball 5-10 times a games, hence not a huge number of throws for coaches to look at, but Cone came to Michigans camp this summer and they were very impressed with how he through the ball and Michigan did not recruit any of the big time QBs other than Tebow very hard, because, well they have a chance to land A VERY BIG chance to land Mallett next year.

Also some other top QB are looking hard to UM. Bostick from Penn, runs Michigan's offense in high school so that when he gets an offer and comes to Michigan he will be ready. This is of course of Mallett doesnt come. Michigan only wants one QB next year and that is Mallett. If they dont get him there are a number of others that they will be in on. Mallet is supposed to be announce by the summer, which gives Michigan plenty of time to go out and recruit other studs.

Here's something Michigan fans can look forward to. Can Cone and Forcier really be any worse than Navarre was?
By the way, don't overlook the possibility of Antonio Bass getting the job if Henne goes down. Yeah, he's not a true QB like Michigan would want back there, but he has more experience at this level now and won't be overwhelmed. If he can show the coaches any kind of arm and accuracy he just might get the nod.
Of course, I really just hope Henne never gets hurt. Remember that Breaston was a high school QB too. And Jai Eugene. Hell, they probably have 15 high school QB's on the roster, just playing different positions. When Lloyd Carr is the coach, Jason Forcier would seem like the obvious answer, but I hope he at least considers some of the other options if it comes to that. I think I remember Bass saying that he would only go to a school that at least told him he had an outside chance to get some snaps at QB. He really takes a lot of pride in his ability to play the position and I'm not going to be the one that doubts him.

Jethro, as big of a UM fan as you claim to be, I seriously hope that Navarre statement was a joke. He was never a favorite of anyone while playing here, but his stats/records can't be denied. It is just assinine to compare two guys who have never seen the field to UM's all time passing leader in many categories. He still gets a bad rap for a lot of things, but like I said, it has been 3 years now since he donned the Maize and Blue, how about cutting him some slack?

BTW, no chance Bass plays QB other than on gimmick plays...

Yeah, Navarre holds a lot of records and a number of the things he gets blamed for continue to happen - so it's not just him. But come on, he has a ton of those stats because of amazing players around him and the fact that he basically started for 4 years. If Henne stays all 4 (which he will) and stays healthy (which he should) he breaks every one of those records. Navarre did some nice things and I was being a bit sarcastic, but I don't miss the throws either 5 yards in front or behind a guy who was wide open, or the 7 balls per game knocked down at the line in spite of his height.

I agreed until that last bit.

To me, Navarre's biggest problem was (and is) that he never learned to look off a receiver. He locks in from the moment the ball is snapped.
