MEANWHILE, IN DETROIT

The Pistons are putting together one of the greatest seasons in NBA history. They're 26-5, a start that ranks among the best. When the Bulls won 72, they were 28-3 at this point. The Pistons are not likely to win 70 games, but they could get close.

Yet the Pistons have been more invisible than any great team. They haven't had a player win a player-of-the week award and don't have one player in line to start the All-Star Game. In the voting, Ben Wallace is second at center, Rasheed Wallace third at forward and Chauncey Billups fifth at guard. It's also possible every starter could be named to the All-Star team.

Said Raptors coach Sam Mitchell, "How do you leave Tayshaun (Prince) out, Ben, Chauncey and Rip (Hamilton)? Really, how do you? And then, you can make a case for Rasheed for what he does offensively and defensively."

Flip Saunders, in his first season with the team, is almost assured to coach the East All-Stars with the Pistons so far ahead in the conference.
The Pistons and their fans remain, perhaps justifiably, paranoid about the perceived lack of respect and recognition. They note their group, unselfish and hard-working and without any thugs, is what the NBA says it wants to promote. The team that most resembles the Pistons is the Spurs. The two almost certainly are headed for a repeat matchup in the NBA Finals. Last season's produced the lowest TV ratings and fan and media interest in years.

It's the paradox the NBA faces with a team like Detroit racing to historic highs at a time the league's top markets are in rebuilding modes. For the first time, this season could produce no playoff teams from the five biggest basketball markets and biggest winners. The Bulls, 76ers, Celtics, Lakers and Knicks all are struggling.

All of the starters for the East deserve to play in the game. That's the important thing. I'm almost think it's better to be voted in as a reserve, because you're getting the respect of the coaches you play.

That said, Chauncey's a lock. So's Ben. Rip, though, may be a different story.

I can't imagine Arenas won't make it. And the East needs another big man, who I think will be Chris Bosh. So, basically, you've got Carter, Rip, Redd, Pierce, and Kidd fighting for 3 spots. 2 of them are going to be snubbed big time.

Right now, I'm going with Carter, Rip, and Pierce. Right now.

Is it 15 on the all-star team?

PG: Iverson Billups Arenas
SG: Wade Hamilton/Redd I like Hamilton but Redd is playing well and maybe even Vince
SF: LeBron Pierce
PF: Jermaine Bosh Jamison
C: Ben Shaq

No order, just my guess and opinion.

In years past there were always a number of other guys that it was hard to justify leaving off the team to put Billups or Rip on. I don't see that anymore. Baron Davis used to be one of those guys, but he's not in the East anymore. Kidd was, but he's fallen from his throne a bit. People made a case for Marbury, but I don't want to hear even a little of that. Billups deserves respect before anyone in Chicago. I've completely forgotten Steve Francis exists, and that must mean something about him and his team. Brevin Knight has been absolutely impressive, but Billups has been better. No good arguments against Billups. Hamilton has more competition - though a lot of it depends on what position guys who play SG/SF are considered as.

The only Piston players who deserve spots are Billups and Ben. Maybe Rip, be he's waaaaaaaaaaay too one-dimensional.

And they value defense waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much in all-star games to send Rip.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Exactly what i was thinking.

Shit, Rip's a better defender than Vince Carter easily.

I've actually become damn impressed with Rip's defense the past two years. He's gotten so much better at D than I thought he could be.
