View Full Version : January 10 roster deadline/10-day contracts
Glenn 01-05-2006, 09:26 AM Contracts on the books become guaranteed after today, so like we saw with Mateen, there will probably be some cuts today.
Also, teams can start signing guys to 10 day contracts today.
WTFchris 01-05-2006, 09:42 AM Also, teams can start signing guys to 10 day contracts today.
I'll make sure and stay by my phone then.
Glenn 01-05-2006, 09:43 AM I'm having a brain fart, who has the guaranteed contract, Acker or Amir?
WTFchris 01-05-2006, 09:58 AM John Hammond: We could be forced to make a decision. We don't have 16 on guranteed contact. Alex Acker is on a non-guaranteed contract, so we only have 15 with guaranteed contracts. As we said here today, on October 6, our plan is to keep Acker, so we could be forced to make a decision with someone on our roster. But we are a couple of weeks away from having to do that.
BTW, he is referring to the decision to cut Dupree. I can only assume Amir is guarenteed or he would have said so.
Glenn 01-05-2006, 10:11 AM So Acker could be gone today, theorhetically.
That would seem to add more relevance to JS' thread.
theMUHMEshow 01-05-2006, 10:25 AM I would like to see them keep Acker. I love Acker...Hope he gets to stay with the Pistons
Glenn 01-05-2006, 03:53 PM A "nevermind" might be in order for this thread.
No action as of yet.
Glenn 01-05-2006, 03:57 PM Whoa not so fast...
The Hawks just cut John Thomas and the Suns cut Jared Reiner.
The Bulls also signed forward Randy Holcombe.
Big doin's.
WTFchris 01-05-2006, 04:59 PM wow, that's breaking news.

I don't think Ackers continued presence on our roster means anything other than he's going to get paid for the season. He's making rookie minimum fer cryin out loud, Davidson would let Joe cut him in a second if we needed the roster spot any time from here on out.
Heck put an Acker Tax on all the beer - one penny more - if needed.
PistonsNation 01-05-2006, 06:47 PM I think John Lucas Jr. was also cut.
Cross 01-05-2006, 07:16 PM So was Aaron Miles of the Warrios and big name Samaki Walker
Glenn 01-06-2006, 08:45 AM some of these have been posted already, but here's a complete list
Atlanta Hawks Waived center John Thomas.
Chicago Bulls Signed forward Randy Holcombe to a 10-day contract.
Cleveland Cavaliers Waived center Zendon Hamilton.
Golden State Warriors Waived guard Aaron Miles.
Indiana Pacers Waived center Samaki Walker.
Phoenix Suns Waived center Jared Reiner.
New Orleans/Oklahoma City waives Sean Banks.

giffman 01-06-2006, 11:50 AM From Tuesday's Detroit Free Press interview with Alex Acker:
I haven't really thought about Jan. 10. I haven't been told anything, basically. I hope (they don't waive me). I can't say if they would or not, but I'm praying they don't. I feel I've improved a lot. And basically just playing with these guys, three-on-three, that helps a lot. I'm getting my confidence back from that. The rookies are on one team. Two days ago, we won one game out of five, so that was kind of horrible. (Monday), we won two. So we're improving. We're getting our butts kicked, but we're still learning.
Glenn 01-06-2006, 11:52 AM I think he's got a guaranteed contract now.
If I understand correctly, players had to be waived by the end of the day yesterday in order to clear waivers before the contracts become guaranteed on the 10th.
So if that is true, if he wasn't waived, then he can go out and start spending that money now.

Well, sort of. I think on January 10th his contract becomes 100 percent guaranteed. I think until then it might be 80 percent guaranteed. At least that is what I gather from the following:
90. Are contracts always guaranteed?
Not necessarily. There are a few specific types of contracts that must be guaranteed. All other guarantees are a matter of individual negotiation between the player and team when the contract is signed. Only a player's base salary can be guaranteed -- not bonuses or incentives. The percentage of base salary that is guaranteed cannot increase from one year to the next (e.g., if 50% of a player's salary is guaranteed one season, then no more than 50% of the player's salary can be guaranteed in any subsequent season of the contract).
There are actually several types of guarantees: lack of skill, death (insured or non-insured), injury/illness (insured or non-insured), mental disability (insured or non-insured), and non-insured basketball-related injury. So, for example, a contract might be fully guaranteed for any injury or illness, but not for lack of skill. Some guarantees are for a partial amount of the player's salary, and the amount can change on specified dates. For example, $2 million of Vlade Divac's $5.94 million 2005-06 salary with the Lakers was guaranteed through September 30, 2005. Had he remained on the Lakers' roster after that date, his entire salary would have become guaranteed. Since he was waived prior to that date, he was only owed $2 million.
The required guarantees are as follows:
For sign-and-trade contracts, the first season must be protected for lack of skill.
For rookie "scale" contracts, all seasons must be protected for skill and non-insured injury/illness for at least 80% of the rookie scale amount.
In addition, on January 10 the base salary in all contracts becomes guaranteed for the remainder of that season (except for one case -- see question 59). Also, if a player is waived prior to January 10 but is injured as a direct result of playing basketball with his team, then his salary is guaranteed until he is ready to play again or until the end of the season, whichever comes first.

Dude, Isiah called me and everyone on my block too dangling 40 million dollar, 10-day contracts.
We're all holding out for a chance at the ring.
Pharaoh 01-06-2006, 09:57 PM I called Joe but I told him I'd only fly over if he traded Darko.
Next thing I know Joe is on the radio telling the world that Darko is available.
I guess I better go get my ticket

He's poll ratings are still in the shitter, Iraq is still a quagmire, Abramoff is going to name names and he's admitted to an impeachable offence...
Glenn 01-09-2006, 10:53 AM Cut the check
Alex Acker can breathe easier. Actually, he has been breathing easy since 6 Thursday night. That's when his contract became guaranteed for the rest of the season.
"It's a true blessing," Acker said. "I kind of had a good feeling about it. They never hassled me or told me I had to step up my game or nothing like that. They never brought it to my attention."
Acker, a rookie guard who has yet to be activated this season, will get the full $398,076 this season. He was the only player on the roster without a guaranteed contract.
The actual deadline for guaranteeing contracts is Tuesday. But league rules stipulate that players had to be placed on waivers two business days before that deadline. Obviously, Acker was never placed on waivers.
