View Full Version : Any custom themes or styles?
bangpow 01-04-2006, 04:55 PM Hey guys, I am new here and all, but i figured i would give you guys a couple suggestions for the site.
I think you should really get a new them for it, the default SubSilver is the main PHPBB default and there's all kind of themes availage and sites like phpbbhacks.com and others. Plus, they are super easy to install. Don't go and pay for a "commercial" theme, though. It's not worth it. That site also has all kinds of hacks that you can install on here, too.
Also, you should try and make some custom "new post" etc. icons, too. It adds a lot to a site when you take the time to come up with a cool little logo or something for those. Plus, you use the same procedure of installing them on your site as you did with your custom logo at the top. Just name it what the default one is named on the server.
One last thing, as you guys expand, look into portal type software like PHPNuke or something. It's really good if you plan on writing articles and what not.
My site, featured in my sig blow, is utillizeing PHPNuke, but i have done some graphic mods to it. Also, I did add the custom icons in the forums too.
I'm not trying to tell you guys what to do or anything, I am just trying to pass along some of the things that i've learned since i started my site about 18 months ago.
Glenn 01-04-2006, 04:57 PM Thanks bang, those are great suggestions.
No worries, all constructive criticism/feedback is welcome. I happen to agree with you as well - at least the first two ideas, I don't know what you are talking about in the tertiary.
Can the custom "new thread" icons be different for each board?? Maybe something as simple as the old Piston logo for old posts and the new Piston "P" logo for new posts...
The details show you care.

phpnuke is software that's written in PHP that kind of "wraps" around your forums. Basically, you can have a front page of your site with all kinds of custom "modules" and "blocks" with different content in them and what not. What it also does is make it so your "staff" can have a few writers for it and they will be able to post articles themselves without have to send it to a webmaster to have them put it up. It automatically goes to the front page if you want it to.
there's all kinds of things you can do with it, but you gotta watch out and keep the software updated, because as with any php type sites, there can be holes in the security.
DrRay11 01-04-2006, 05:06 PM I think perhaps the Syndicate has similar plans of expansion. Ever need an article writer, fellas, let me know. Creative writing may be something I get into for a career.
MOLA1 01-04-2006, 06:09 PM Thanks for the suggestions man! I'm working on changing the looks of this place.
I just haven't gotten around to it. I have a busy ass job.
E-ray...we'll need you to help out. We want to have some writers contribute all the time and room for more posters to jump in as they wish.

No problem. Like I said, those are some of things i do when i first use a new theme or template, I customize.
Shoot, I've changed the total look and design of my layout a good 4 times in the last 18 months and now i'm working on creating custom blocks for my site to add more graphics and what not.
MOLA1 01-04-2006, 07:15 PM I totally appreciate your suggestions! I might need help doing this...lol.

Isnt it nice to actually have a site that LISTENS to what the users think could help? Wow, is that refreshing. Again reason #192980898362379 why I call this place home sweet home!

I'm not getting into that. Besides, it's not why i'm here. I like all the places i visit for their own reasons.
MOLA1 01-04-2006, 08:07 PM Fuck that! You love this place!!!

I like this website. Now, if you guys get rid of the SubsSilver template, you'll be in business.

We will love it even more.
Or you can make your own theme.
An upcoming game I've been looking for just customized their forums. Very clean looking, and subtle.

MOLA1 01-09-2006, 08:06 AM That's what we were planning on. If we go too crazy with the look and go like black with red text, then cats probably can't go on the site from work. It'll look obvious that they're on a non-work related site. The idea's to keep it clean, but creative. We've got some good ideas.
Since I am the new technical advisor, may I suggest that you have a few different "skins" to choose from. that way the working stiffs can choose a vanilla "official" looking "skin" whereas the rest of us can have a kickass looking version...
I used technical terms like "skins" to show I know what I am talking about as the resident technical advisor.
WTFchris 01-09-2006, 11:35 AM All I know is the structure of this is perfect. If the colors are to be changed (or the look and feel) by all means. But the structure should not be messed with.

Whatever he is talking about, I probably agree with.

New themes or "skins" have nothing to do with the physical structure of the forums, only the color scheme of it.
