Well, do you? It seems the illegal downloading of music has started to shift from socially acceptable plunder to social more. Where do you stand on the matter?

You're a damned fool if you pay for music. Most of the Artists make money from tours and shit. Not from album sales. Fuck buying music. Ever see how these pigs live? I dont think they're hurting

Yeah, my conscience is pretty low maintenance, and self-righteousness can get expensive.

I use torrent sites to download stuff once in a while, now that I've got all that kazaa bullshit off my cpu.

I often find that it either takes too long to find what I am looking for (it's not Top 40 type stuff, so options are fewer) or I'd rather own the original disc so I can have the artwork, sleeve, etc.

I don't mind spending $12.99 on a disc from my favorite artists, but there really isn't a whole lot of music worth spending money on these days anyways, IMO, so this is less than a problem than it used to be like when I was in college 10 years ago.

What's a torrent site? Dead serious.

Is the record industry still stealing our money?

For great not-so-popular and underground music, I have bought their CDs and albums to support them.

If I've seen them on TV/heard them on the radio, I don't owe them jack shit cause they probably have enough to live comfortably on top of making music.

That said, I owe the RIAA about $2 million with my ~35 GB of music

Try SoulSeek and MP2P is you are looking music that's hard to find. Ares is not too bad either.

Yes and no. I'm not sure of the legitimacy, but (cough) I know people (cough) that are on servers where you pay a one time fee and then get unlimited downloads after that. Not sure if it gives any money to the artists, but the fact that there was payment at one time and somewhere in the beginning the words COMPLETELY LEGAL were there as a token, seem to suit the conscience quite well.

does anyone know of a reliable and really good bitTorrent? I keep trying Azureus and it never seems to work

H1Man

BitTornado and BitComet are two of the more popular alternatives to Azureus. BT Queue is a java client, if you are looking for one.

I did use bittorrent with suprnova.org until that was forced to shut down its hosting. It is now a p2p news source. If there is a small band that I really enjoy, I will go out and buy their cd. Same goes with Movies. But its the greedy record companies that want your money. Albums are still going platinum. So people are still buying music. And the artists sure as hell arent suffering.

I would be against , copying and reselling music to make a profit for yourself. Thats what original copyright laws were made for. But now they are just trying to control everything all in the name of the rich getting richer. All this DRM crap makes me sick. My dad records live concerts on a minidisc to make them into CDs for our church. His player only allows him to copy the music once to his computer. Its the dumbest thing ever.

Right now I use Limewire when I want to grab something. If you are on a network with people on iTunes, you can get alot of stuff that way using a third party program called ourTunes.

I've spent a lot of money buying shit on vinyl over the last 10+ years. So, I feel that i have contributed to the pockets of others way more than the average consumer.

Therfor, if there's something that i'm looking for, you're damn right I DL it.

Besides, if i like it that much, i usually go buy the vinyl copy of it anyway. So, whatever.

Although, I do support the independents and will give them my money.

I meant that if i DL'd something and liked it, I would probably go out and buy the record, too. Since that is what i use when playing around town.

So wait...are you still buying stuff on vinyl for real, or are you just referring to CD's as such. I know some bands are still releasing stuff on records. Some people still like buying those for nostalgic value.

I still buy things on vinyl for real. I have a couple thousand sitting in my basement, but most of it is new stuff.

Most of the electronic music that's released gets released on vinyl, plus there's all kinds of remixes that come out that only come out on vinyl. The same goes for hip hop. There's all kinds of extra hip hop releases you can buy, like instrumental albums, that you can only get on record.

How illegal is torrenting and how likely are you to get caught?

Anthony
01-19-2006, 12:08 AM
Well, Mike has about the entire music industry from 1950-2006 downloaded on our computer, and I havent seen a damn thing yet. I would say its pretty safe.

I think you only get in trouble if you are the one sharing/distributing the music. Downloading it, while not technically legal, can't get you busted.

Same as any other P2P, the thing about torrents, is that they MAKE you share, unlike most other P2Ps where you can find a way to turn it off.

For new full albums and movies, my BT client is usually open (all the time).

Not exactly true. If they manage to catch you (on a cold day in hell), you'll be paying x amount for each copyrighted song you have as well as other things.

For any eMule/eDonkey users, Razorback2 has been taken offline by the Belgian Federal Police.

To be honest I think most music today is shit, so I wouldn't waste 12 bucks or more on a CD to get a song or two. I am not an old fart by any means at 25 and I have a very diverse taste in music so it's not like I don't try to find quality music.

I am not ethically opposed to downloaded or sharing music but I don't anymore because of virsuses and worms that manage to find their way into my system.

I think the biggest problem in the music business today is everybody can get a record deal and it one record and done, there is little staying power. Music is suffering for that. Every executive is willing to go out on a limb for the chance to sign the next big thing. A lot of the "artists" that get record deals today should remain in the local bin at Diserable Discs.

I visit a lot of album sharing blogs, they are good. also, some forums have a lot of good music upped by members. Other than that, if i want to find something i use www.allofmp3.com...one of those russian sites that claim to be legal and from what ive read, is legal. But yeah, i also have a lot of old vinyl...the price you can get on those from a music store is great and theres a store near me with a great selection, ive left there with like 20 vinyls for 15 bucks. But yeah, like anthony said, the huge majority of profit made by artists is from concerts so there not losing out if we download there album online.
