View Full Version : XBox 360, by a novice.
DennyMcLain 12-24-2005, 02:59 PM I apologize in advance in that I'm most likely the only WTFer who DOESN'T play video games.
I was at Fry's Electronics yesterday (Los Angeles area electronics superstore, much like J and R is to NY) and I stopped to watch some kids playing Call of Duty 2 on an XBox 360. I've never seen one in person, so I didn't really know what to expect. They had it hooked up to a Samsung 27" LCD TV, with a surround system.
Holeee Fucking Shit!!!
Somebody would be wise to coin the term "CGI game" or "Photoreal game", anything but "video" game. When I think of "video game", the first thing that pops into my mind is NOTHING like I saw. It was next to a PS2 playing a street racing game, hooked up to a tube TV with no sound system, and I'm certain Sony would have sued if they had known. It simply wasn't fair.
The detail was fucking amazing. Wicker baskets in the intermediate foreground (not close-up foreground) missed no detail -- they looked like real wicker baskets, right down to the sheen of the light reflecting off the top edge of the strands. The game was super smooth, not jaggy like some other games with incredible detail, and the color depth was outstanding.
I'm probably not going to buy one, but if there was one system I'd jump the ship into the depths of Trekkie and/or Star Wars Fanboy-ville for, it'd be this one.
DrRay11 12-24-2005, 04:19 PM I may get one eventually, but will wait until the price drops some. I played King Kong at Best Buy-- just awesome graphics.

DennyMcLain 12-24-2005, 04:32 PM From the above L.A. Times article:
EA produced a new edition to coincide with the release last month of the Xbox 360. Every seat at every NFL stadium is represented. So is every bulb in every video board — a few of which are burned out.
Three-dimensional head scans were taken of more than 100 players, capturing facial details that include childhood scars and razor burns. In an editing mode, it's possible to zoom in close enough to read the fine print on the warning stickers adhered to the back of the players' helmets, or to spot the shiny silver food warmers in the luxury suites.
Are you fucking kidding me????
theMUHMEshow 12-24-2005, 09:15 PM It is pretty insane...I just wish that they would get the gameplay down before they worry so much about the graphics. I am sick of seeing glitches (which there are numerous in Madden for 360) or seeing the same play work over and over in sports games. Fix that shit EA before you worry about the graphics...When you do maybe I will stop playing Warcraft and pick up a new xbox

Ha!! Beat you in one other thing besides signing up first!!
The detail on these games is fucking nuts. On NBA Live you can see fucking beads of sweat...in awesome detail. Just miraculous how cool these games have become.
Koolaid 12-26-2005, 11:34 PM here's the thing about the x-box 360, from what i understand it's pretty much no different from an x-box what so ever. unless you have a high definition television.
think about the amazing detail. to be able to read the warning on the back of a football helmet you are going to need hi def, the resolution on a typical television is not detailed enough to display 360's graphics as well.
When you go to these stores and they have the 360 on display, they display it hi-def.
In all seriousness i'm not that impressed with what i saw of a 360 console (or the new playstations for that matter). Look back at the jump between the nintendo and the super nintendo, or nintendo 64 to X-Box. This is the least technological advancement i've seen in a console.
H1Man 12-27-2005, 01:26 AM I don't think you will truly see the technological advancements in the 360 until mid to late 2006. It is very rare for game makers to fully utilize all the new features in a console when it's launched. And given the fact that MS rushed 360 onto the market, it gave game developers even less time to further work on their games.
I would wait until games like Gears of War, Jade Empire 2, Halo 3 and other projects from Rare, MS & Ubisoft to see what the 360 can really do.
In the mean time, you could play Halo 2 on Live. :D
DrRay11 12-27-2005, 10:06 AM Since I have an HDTV, I'm going to buy one within the next month or two, methinks.
DennyMcLain 12-28-2005, 03:13 AM When I was at Fry's, a woman approached the service station (they have one at every major area within the store) and asked about the 360. Of course they were out (shipment in that morning, gone by noon). He pointed to the demo, right across the aisle from the desk. She didn't see the big deal -- so the kids were watching a movie.
The guy said it wasn't a movie -- it was a video game.
Her jaw dropped.
True story.
Black Dynamite 12-28-2005, 11:05 AM i'm still cool til ps3. i have no problem working this psp gadget in my free time.
otherwise ps2 is good enough until ps3.
realistic 12-28-2005, 02:02 PM I own an old Nintendo and play RBI Baseball, Techmo Bowl, Contra, and Mike Tyson's Punchout.
I've never felt the need to upgrade.
Eh, I'm not one for console games at all.
Last consoles I got were Dreamcast and a PSOne (the small one).
I'm more of a PC gamer, shit like Half-Life 2 and the rest of the Valve games. Graphics and realism always top notch with the right hardware, and just looking at the 360 it's pretty much "Yawn, graphics so last year".
But for a console, it does look nice. My bet's on PS3 to take over for the next generation console though, with the 360 right behind and then Nintendo's next stupid thing dead last (ever since N64 Nintendo went downhill).
UncleCliffy 12-29-2005, 04:13 PM I haven't actually played an xbox 360. It looks like nice but I just can't justify spending $400 for a system and $60 for games. I'll stick to my solitare.

Are you sure you play Techmo Bowl? Or do you mean Tecmo Bowl? I hate to be the spelling police but you can't disgrace the greatest football video game of all time like that.
Also, I'm lucky enough to have a 360 and I posted my full review of it so far in the Off-Topic forum. Check it out.

Alright, I own an XBOX 360 and here's what i think.
No, there isn't a big jump from the graphics like how it was with Nintendo to Super Nintendo. But graphics can only get so good and what we are starting to see now is the level of detail that's presented.
I gotta tell you, NBA 2K6 360 looks GREAT on a regular TV. The fact that you can see the sweat glistening off the players as the game goes on and then you start to see sweat soaked jerseys on the players and what not.
That's the kind of upgrades that we are going to see. But I will also say that i popped in College Hoops 2K6 for the regular XBOX last night, and i thought those graphics were pretty sweet....until i got my 360.
The 360 is a nice piece of hardware. The contruction of it is great and XBOX Live is an awesome online service.
I am totally happy that i got a 360.
Madden, on the other hand...not so good. I own it and i have been tolerating it only because it's something different. The ball physics are off and it's very stripped down, but EA absolutely HAD to rewrite that game from the ground up and i'm gonna assume that Microsoft was really pushing them to have some games ready at launch.
Anthony 01-04-2006, 08:50 PM Yeah, I heard Madden wasnt nothing to get excited about. I'm probably not going to get one until I know i have an HDTV. Dosnt seem worth it, if you dont have it.

I don't have an HDTV and NBA 2K6 still looks sweet as hell.
I thought the graphics for College Hoops 2K6 were tight for the regular XBOX, and NBA 2K6 for the 360 blows them away. Heck, I've seen pics of CH2K6 for the 360 and those look just as sweet for the 360.
I wouldn't let not having an HDTV hold you back. seriously.
H1Man 01-05-2006, 12:42 AM They didn't make a lot of upgrades to Madden. They just kinda moved around bunch of options, added a couple new features (new play calling screen), removes a couple old features (challenges) and they shipped it out. Lamest new game release ever.

Madden is a completely different game than it is on the current gen, but it's not even close to being complete. I think MS was probably sticking the screws to EA because they knew they needed Madden to be available when the 360 launched. The game is obviously not 100%.
Regardless, NBA 2K6 on the 360 is probably the best basketball game made.
Mikey 01-05-2006, 01:08 AM Tecmo Super Bowl is still the greatest game ever made.

I've got 2K6 on the 360 and I'd have to agree. The graphics look better than watching a real game on regular TV. The gameplay is fluid too, no other basketball game is even close, the only sports game I'd put over it in the history of games would be Tecmo Super Bowl.
DennyMcLain 01-07-2006, 02:33 AM With all of this fine detail, I'm buying stock in the first company to present a line of hard porn 360 "games".
Fuck, they'll IPO at 15, and end the day at 50!!!!
I mean, can you imagine??? A photorealistic porn flick that YOU control. I'm not fucking joking, either. It would sell like mad!

The controls would have to be simplistic enough to work one handed.
In a similar move, i'd market X-Box wipes for stick controllers.
