View Full Version : Attendance for the 4 major sports

I posted this on UC's site, so I am moving this here:

I took the attendance of every team in the 4 major sports and lumped them by the Metro area they reside in. Then I calculated the total average attendance in the leagues and the % of that total that each city provides. I then added up the total % in all 4 sports to get the % of all fan attendance in the country that each city provides. I also divided that number by the # of teams in that city to get the % of fans/team. As you can see, Detroit is 5th in total %, but first in the group of cities with only 4 major sports teams.

Where's your Player Efficiency Rating? You should have changed your name from WTFChris to Mini-Hollinger.

Just kidding, Chris. That's good stuff, even though I'm not sure how LA could lead anything with their fans.

I should take you to the terrordome for that hollinger remark. lol

I'm going to sort the numbers a little differently too when I get time so you can see the breakdown of %/team for the categories.

I think the LA/SD grouping is way unfair.

Can't you separate them into the 3 metro areas, SD, LA and Anaheim?

Not suprising considering the Lions, Pistons, and Wings sell out every game. Now if we ever got the Tigers on the right page.

So Detroit is basically in the top 3 for cities with only 1 team for each sport...

If the Tigers field a competitive team on the field, I think their attendance will go up.

Yeah, the Pistons and Wings could add 5,000 seats to their stadiums/arenas and still sell the places out. This town would go nuts if the Lions could get back to the 10-win level (that's in one season, not 3). Like H1 said, Comerica is really the only place with empty seats. Even if the club was winning, I don't think they'll ever sell that place out completely. It's simply too hard to do for 81 games. Some places manage, but they're generally much bigger markets. We could increase it by several thousand per game though. What does it hold, about 40,000? So there's 15,000 empty seats per game. A team that wins 85-90+ games would cut that 15,000 in half.

Chris can you post the salary info for the Pistons?

what info? I no longer have access to the realgm ones. I have to go by hoopshype like everyone else. or are you talking about something else?

Here is it sorted by the per team category. This ignores how many teams are in the city and bases it only on the attendance % within that sport by teams in the city. As you can see Detroit is 4th if you ignore the 1 team cities (mostly just hockey cities), but still a solid top 10 if you include them.

BTW, I thought of a great way to improve this. I could also tally the win % of those teams and get that into the equation. Then you could see the % of fans per win% too. Only trouble is that would take me a long time to get those because I think you'd have to get the win% of the last 5 years maybe for it to be a decent stat. Otherwise you can get anomilies (like the packers flopping this year but being a winning team the last 5-10 years).

I'll work on it when I have time I guess. But I think it would make a more useful than it is now. That way you could see if the fans turn out despite bad teams to support or vice versa.

Chris - the salary table you posted a long time ago.

Was that posted here or on another WTF clone?

Can't remember right now.

I think it was from hoopshype though and their numbers aren't 100% accurate (or so I've been told)

No, I did have access to a better list when I wrote this article for realGM:

But my login expired (and before I quit as mod too).
