It's hard not to get that "end of days" vibe.

I've burned all of my PTO this past week and a half, but I work at a hospital and can't stay away forever. I've been shaking every day and it's currently noon and I've been up since yesterday. I think I'm going to cry for a bit after finally logging off. If I could stand the taste of alcohol I would have drank myself to death by now. Other than that, doing okay. Hope my parents don't die.

A couple friends of mine are working at hospitals and dealing with COVID-19. They've both told me that the hardest part is, so often, they can do nothing. Until the tests come back, the suffering patients in medical limbo. You cant' actually treat until you have a diagnosis, but you have to otherwise care for them as if they had a positive diagnosis.

Two weeks ago, another friend's close co-worker had a FALSE POSITIVE COVID-19 test, with the scarcity of tests meaning it took awhile to get COVID-19 mostly ruled out. Due to this, he burned a day at Beaumont to get tested. Fortunately, he's negative, but now he's withdrawn and freaked and I can't just go over and try and cheer him up.

Where I work can't decide whether to pretend to be business as usual, or not. Every deadline, promise, and projection that's weeks out is bullshit. I had to tell someone that no, people won't bet going into COVID-19 evacuated facilities just because they're really curious about something minor. At least the big boss has some empathy.

Gonna be working from home! Thankfully I don't do any patient care, so there's no need for me to be physically present at the hospital. Things are looking up for my fam's health. Hope everyone here is able to stay safe.

One of my best friends just got moved from his cushy gig as a Post-Op nurse for ortho surgeries to a night nurse in the ICU.

An acquaintance, in hospitals and the medical system for other dire reasons since Christmas, died from COVID-19.
He might not have survived what he was dealing with in any event, but the COVID-19 is what ultimately did him in.
He likely wouldn't have contracted it if he weren't in a hospital setting, but you never _know_ with such things.

I had a vaccinated uncle die from COVID-19. He didn't even know he had it. He was just found in bed dead. Given the meds out in the bathroom, he likely thought he had a cold. But, the medical examiner backtracked it to COVID-19 and lack of oxygen. He was quite healthy, apart from shitty hearing (occupational hazard). Today is day 9 for my son. Still had a 102 temp when he went to bed last night. I wake up every day hoping nobody else in the house has it.

I've been formally diagnosed with some "long COVID-19" effects. It's relatively mild congestive crap at this point, after some proper treatment. But apparently, it's quite real and not just my getting prematurely old and falling apart watching the Pistons lose so damn much, which seemed like a reasonable hypothesis at the time. Finding a doctor who saw "my having COVID-19" and "my suddenly snoring and needing a CPAP after" as related (well DUH!) has helped.

My "just don't go out in public ever again" strategy has been working so far.

The weird thing was that my COVID-19 symptoms weren't bad. I honestly thought I had a cold until I tested positive. No fever, no loss of smell, no obvious fatigue, no COVID toe or belly button or any of that crap. I just had lingering crud that would not go away, which was misdiagnosed as bronchitis/pneumonia, then down a stupid path that led me to "get a second opinion from someone who annoys me less".
