To me, the biggest deal is that the park where the protests happened was properly owned and privately donated to the city to host the Lee statue. It was named Lee Park, even. Keep in mind the most of these statues are a 20th century innovation, mostly Jim Crow-era shit. In many cases, they were built on state property. In some cases, that property was seized from where blacks lived. quite deliberately. The whole point was to let blacks know who was in charge.

Not all the statues are like that. As near as anyone can figure, the statue of Robert E. Lee at Charlottesville seems to be more about romanticism for the Confederate past. The donator wasn't known to be particularly racist -- hell, he donated a park named after Booker T. Washington, too. Lee is a complex figure in history -- hell, we put him on stamps and shit.

Not sure it matters, but that's the truth of it.
