View Full Version : TV platforms
Tahoe 10-14-2016, 06:44 PM Is that the correct way to say it? Platforms?
I've asked this before but really ready to cut ties with DirectTV.
All I want to watch is live sports. NONE of these dipshit millennial shows are worth a shit, imo. I would like to watch a couple of old tv series. I'm talking 60 and 70s type shit.
So I looked at ROKU. I thought it was an either/or Roku or Netflix and then it looks like I get Netflix over my Roku tv?
Not following this shit at all. I'm old and its happy hour.
Any help would be appreciated. If not, FUCK YOU!
MikeMyers 10-16-2016, 10:51 AM Well then stay where you are. Cable is the only option with live sports.
Vinny 10-16-2016, 04:04 PM You can get League Pass, NHL package, MLB package for sure on Roku or Fire TV, etc....NFL I think is only a couple devices. Cable's a ripoff, I ditched it 5 years ago and never looked back. Once in a while the games you can't get streaming you go to the bar.
MikeMyers 10-16-2016, 06:16 PM I have Uverse, Comcast, and Wow in my neighborhood. I just jump from promotion to promotion every 2 years if the one company doesn't give me a good price. Case in point, I have Comcast on a 2 year deal. Cable TV with HBO and HD DVR with 75 Meg internet for $90. For me its not worth to ditch cable and do all this horse trading with Roku and apps and antenna etc.. They will work with you if you have competitors. No reason to pay full price.
Tahoe 10-18-2016, 02:26 PM I can get NBA season of just Pistons games online and output to TV for 119. I don't care about rest of league. DirectTV is prolly going to be 200. Its not that savings I'm after. Its paying probably 120 a month and I watch very little TV except for NBA, NFL, NCAA football, NBA. I'll buy packages for those. The wife likes old reruns. She just doesn't like the new shows. So I would 'think' the old shows would be on ROKU.
But again, I'm not clear here. I can get HULU over my Roku subscription? I'm just not following. Light bulb hasn't clicked yet. To me that's like getting Comcast over my Direct TV subscription. I don't think I'm making myself clear. But I thought most of those new platforms or whatevs, would have their own content and you purchase it from them. I'm probably way off.
Tahoe 10-18-2016, 02:27 PM And thanks to all.
I have a smart TV, I should just put my CC in when it asks, it said it wouldn't bill me, and start exploring. Maybe a hands on will help figure this out.

Roku is just a device, not any kind of actual subscription. If you subscribe to Hulu you can access it through a Roku device, a firetv, as smart tv, an apple tv, a pc, etc...Same with netflix, etc....Sometimes they have limits on how many devices can access concurrently (ie it's a couple extra bucks if you want to watch Hulu on your PC, your wife wants to watch Hulu on the smart tv, Jorge from crew 2 wants to watch Hulu on his Samsung Glaxy Note 7 and the boy wants to watch Hulu on the roku all at the same time) but I think it's only a minimal upcharge...
Tahoe 10-19-2016, 09:30 AM There it is. Thanks Vinny. SRS Roku is a device, not a subscription. Got it now.
Tahoe 10-19-2016, 10:53 PM Talked to another hombre and looking forward to this. Tired of paying tv services to pipe commercials in at me. It won't go away, but maybe I can lessen it.

2 things to note....
1. you need to make sure you have a great internet connection to whatever streaming device you end up suing which either means a really good wifi router or a direct hard-lined cat 5.
2. Google 'kodi' and figure out how to install it and you can steal everything that's not live...streaming live sports is tougher...
Tahoe 10-20-2016, 04:07 PM Thanks Vin. I have a fast connection where I'm currently living (fiber optic), but planning on making a move here shortly and the internet speeds are what concerns me. If we stay in CA, we'll at the very least move out to acreage where there isn't any cable or coax connections. But might even leave the state. Just sold a rental and another after the first of the year and then I'll sell my house too. No real ties to CA. Its just harder for me to anti back up in the CA real estate market. Its 750-1m to get anything decent. Utah is one of the cheaper places to live. 13th least expensive cost of living, while CA is 49th. So with home prices so much cheaper and less people, less cars and still close to Vegas is making look at Utah. Been there a few times and will be going back in December or right after 1st of year. Not sure about internet speeds in Utah, but I'll be checking next time I go. So that's a little wordy way of saying I'll look into it. lol
I will google kodi.

MikeMyers 10-29-2016, 05:43 PM This sounds nuts
http://www.outkickthecoverage.com/espn-loses-621-000-subscribers-worst-month-in-company-history-102916
ESPN is paying $7.3 bil a year in sports rights and is losing millions of subscribers a year. They are paying the NFL $1.9 billion a year for MNF which is $119 mil a game. That's fucking nuts.
Timone 10-29-2016, 06:08 PM Nuts!

MikeMyers 10-30-2016, 09:29 AM Those don't look roasted to me
MikeMyers 12-05-2016, 10:11 PM Guys been using DirectvNOW for the last 2 days. 100 channels for $35 a month or you can get the deal I did: prepay $105 for 3 months of service and get a free apple tv 4. This is not bad. Only issue is I need to get an antenna as the only local channel I get is Fox. Plan is to split the service with someone else since they allow 2 different streams at different locations (Already tested it). 17.50 a month for cable sounds good to me. Picture is HD. HBO is $5 a month. About to cut the cord you guys.
I've been doing Sling TV (Blue = $25) during this basketball season (essentially just care about TNT and Fox Sports Detroit, doesn't have ESPNs). Tried out Orange ($20, ESPN, no TNT or Fox) just prior to the season opener to watch some extra college football. Getting both Orange and Blue would be $40 and I just don't care about ESPN enough for that extra $15. Does the $35 DirectTVNow have the local Fox Sports Detroit channels? I see it has ESPN. Though I think I'm good at $25 plus Netflix and Prime (if you want to count that cost).
Mohu Leaf is a solid indoor HD antenna that has been good enough for long enough to inspire a lot of cheaper copies now. The others of that style might be solid as well and cheaper.
Vinny 12-06-2016, 11:00 AM Yeah, this is intriguing. I tried Sling TV when it first came out and hated it, was super choppy streaming wise. It also had no option for the local fox sports...
MM do you have a link to the apple tv promo? (nvm, found it...)
Here's a link to the free apple tv thing:
https://directvnow.com/appletv#slide1
They also have a free firestick for one month prepay I believe.
There are definitely some hiccups with Sling. None have cost me anything vital in what I've been watching so far. Also, some short bursts of low resolution video (like a play or two long).
I've done league pass in the past but then you lose the national games and have to use a proxy for the local team which is certainly doable but is also an annoying wrinkle when I just want to flip the game on in the first place (and using a proxy for everything creates it's own issues).
MikeMyers 12-06-2016, 09:43 PM So the $35 package has FSD but not the plus at this moment. The $35 is regularly $60 but if you get on board now as an early subscriber, you will be grandfathered at $35. The Pistons game ran smooth tonight and the picture is just as good if not better than Comcast. The service is brand new and it does have its hiccups but I'm willing to deal with it to save the money.

Problem for me is I wouldn't get Pistons I'd get Bulls....and I'm coming off not having cable anyways, mostly using the Kodi.....so it'd mostly be just for ESPN games, the Pistons/Tigers vs Bulls/Sox games, etc...I'm on the fence.
MikeMyers 12-06-2016, 10:18 PM I'm not sure if its by billing zip code or IP for local channels.

I think it's probably IP...so it would be kind of useful since without cable tonight I had to watch a crappy feed instead of League Pass...
Mostly though I'm afraid I'd just zombie it up too much clicking through channels. Already watch too much TV...
MikeMyers 12-07-2016, 07:08 PM I have cable out of convenience. I tried Kodi last year but some of that stuff is frustrating. I'd rather pay something and it be easy to watch and high quality than mess with Kodi.

that's what I thought until I loaded Exodus to Kodi. Smooth sailing.
MikeMyers 12-10-2016, 05:29 PM Did the unthinkable. Cancelled Comcast today. Have WOW for internet and directvnow. Went from 120 a month to 58.
Vinny 12-10-2016, 08:20 PM I still remember the day I cancelled Comcast. Felt so great!
(I actually am back to comcast just for internet now but it's only $29 and I have my own router....)
Timone 12-10-2016, 11:04 PM HATE Concast
