Gateway options?

I have Clear but they are shutting down in my area. Contacted local phone/internet/tv provider but they want 2 year contract and I'm moving within 6 months...ish. There is a cancelation fee.

So is there just some plug in usb type gateway devices that any of you are aware of? Something I could take with me so I wouldn't have to pay cancel fee.

thx

I think the USB device you are referencing is a mobile broadband plan with a USB stick that lets your 'puter connect to it. That's a real option for your situation. Most major cellular networks sell plans and sticks.

Do you know where you are moving? If so, you could go with a national ISP and they should be able to move the account with you (just let them know when you sign up). You could do a DSL provider that wouldn't require an install (assuming you have a phone line run to the house already (just the line hardware, you wouldn't need the phone service) and so shouldn't require a contract.

Thank you Fool. I have some questions in a minute.

I think I have 4 cell phones. 2 smart phones. A little LG tablet. I think its a tablet. Its like my older IPad. The LG is connected to the net at all times. Even driving through Nevada on the way to Vegas.

That's all through AT&T. So you think ATT might have something? I should contact them?

I am moving to a rural area. I would not get a landline phone ever again. Haven't had one for quite a while and won't go back.

So I'm not sure what the hell.

ATT does both DSL and mobile broadband. They will have something that would work for you (assuming you are fine with the price). You don't need a landline in your new home, it would just be for your current place to have DSL service w/o a contract (so you can dump it when you leave). And it wouldn't actually be phone service, that's just the medium DSL uses for the final bit of distance (from the box on the utility pole to your house). The number of devices matters a lot less than the number of people who will be using the service at one time as both DSL and mobile broadband are less bandwidth (a.k.a speed though that's a bit of a misnomer) than a typical cable broadband service.

Your tablet has a data plan if it's always connected to the internet. The mobile broadband would be similar just for whatever device hooks up to the service you get (through the usb stick or a wi-fi hotspot device, etc.). It's much more expensive per Gigabyte than a cable broadband plan though. Just FYI. Crew 2 might have to buy their own lunches for a while.

Thanks. I just went to ATT's site and one of those little "Do you want to Chat" things popped up, so I did and it was helpful. Just like you said, mobile hotspot is additional 20 a month plus data. 5g is roughly 50 on top of that. 15gb goes way up to 200 and 50g is 450 or something.

I need to contact current provider to see what our data usage is? I have no idea. I check on my puter and it adds it up. I think its 6g, but I don't know when it started adding. So no help.

The little hotspot thing can go anywhere so with that, I could take laptop anywhere there's coverage. Not that its needed. That's what my iPhone 6plus is for or tablet.

pain in the ass that my provider is going out of business or whatevs. But I learned something.

Thanks again Fool.

I couldn't live in an area without some kind of cable internet. Internet is more important than clean water.

Update...ntagas.

I ended up checking my data usage and it was about 40g a month. Holy shit. Not gonna pay for that though mobile broadband. So I went with a cable provider. I have a house behind this house and it had coax already run to it. So I just ran a temporary 100ft cable to front house and shazam!

Its fast. Its cheap. Thanks again.
