I was a graduate assistant for an American history class and was conducting an exam review session. We were reviewing fur trappers, and one of them was Jedediah Smith, who was notable in part because he killed a bear in single combat. I said he was easy to remember because his story was basically that Jebidiah Springfield. That was met with blank stares. "You know, from that early episode of The Simpsons?" Stony silence, until one offers, "Yeah, I think I remember something like that." That was when I realized that I was 6-10 years older than all of these 100-level students and The Simpsons wasn't a cornerstone of their pop culture experience. That was the first time that I felt old.

This should be right in my wheelhouse.
