No idea that's where "grandfather clause" came from. Knew about this letter though (and in general about the FBI's attempts to thwart Dr. King). Not sure how to read the fact that they couldn't be troubled to retype the letter to fix the typos.

Right, but then is it racist that they think the black person they were pretending would be poor at spelling (or too lazy to retype) or not racist because they thought s/he would see the typos and correct them?

Maybe both?

I'm guessing the goal was to make the letter look unpolished, like a regular person wrote it, not a government agency.
