Oh man what does that mean. Don't we still have him on our cap

Glenn
12-22-2014, 12:12 PM
Has to be more to the story. Only one man can get to the bottom of this.

SVG! Yes!

I guess they use the 'stretch' provision on his remaining money owed. So they 'stretch' out the payments over 5 years. 5.5 per. Not bad.

Wojo said we were offered a couple good players for him from the Kings before the season but SVG said no. Landry and someone.

But now he was just getting offers of shitty contracts in return or teams would take him but wanted one of our 1st round picks too. Fuck that, if true.

Moving on...

So when can we get rid of Jennings

Glenn
12-22-2014, 03:22 PM
So when Monroe leaves, there should be plenty of PT for the lottery big we're going to draft.

Glenn
12-22-2014, 03:53 PM
@SBNationNBA: Josh Smith was Joe Dumars’ biggest disaster … and that’s saying something. http://t.co/OgLxkpKU1N

So we have five years of 5.5 million in dead salary cap money.

This is definitely an "It Happened."

Yeah, if I am understanding this correctly, we basically decided to operate with a $5.5M handicap vs. the rest of the league for a few years.

No more lazy half-hook-half-floaters from 14 feet clanking off the front of the rim.

Yes, this team might actually be watchable now at least.

Was reading cap going way up so doesn't seem too bad to me.

Better than taking back a bunch of shit contracts for shit players. Bite the bullet. And better than giving away a draft pick also.

Higherwarrior

as soon as he clears waivers and becomes a FA, dumars has suggested we re-sign him to a max contract.

Glenn
12-22-2014, 06:14 PM
Would have been nice to get some trash expirings for him, at least.

Cap going up doesn't make this any better. It's going up for everyone.

Whats the dif from amnesty and this 'stretch' thing? Just the number of years?

When ur previous GM signed shit to shit contracts, the cap going up makes it better.

Some teams can be competitive for a lil less dollars than others. We can still build a nucleus. We won't be competing for a title anytime soon but 5M in dead cap in 5 years prolly won't mean didley fuckin squat.

The amnesty was a one time thing that only applied to contracts signed during the last CBA. It also took the player completely off your cap. You still had to pay the player but he didn't count as part of your team salary. This stretch rule is a permanent part of the waiver system and can be done with any waived player contract. You just almost never see guys with guaranteed contracts waived. At least, not guys with real money guaranteed contracts.

There it is. I couldn't remember WTF the dif was. But you still had to pay, but it came off the cap.

Big dif.

I can't believe the carnage that Dumars inflicted on this team. The worst GM of all time.

I blame his boss/bosses. He brought us a title. That team was great, but also one of the most underachieving bunch of players.

But they should have shit canned him a long time ago. So Joe's tenure as GM would have been much better.

Tahoe

Our highest paid player next year is Totals. 45MILLION effen dollars. He isn't that good. We should 'stretch' that out.

Yes, he drops to 21M the following year, but just sayin.

Ok, funny fail.

The last two CBAs have had amnesty clauses. I suspect the next one (likely in 2016-2017 with the way NBA team valuations have spiked) will have one as well, in which case we may be using it on Smith.

Yeah it sucks..but that's Joe for you

The only thing worse than Josh Smith's 3P shooting is Josh Smith's long 2P shooting.

Tahoe

5.5m isn't much to deal with. We're just going to have to sign good contracts going forward. Every team has a shit contract or 2. Every team has someone that is overpaid by 5mil. I really don't see this as a huge deal. Obviously rather not have dead cap than have it, but in this case, it the thing to do if what we read is true.

Apparently, he's from the Latrine Peewell camp:

The Pistons cut Smith last season, but they're still on the hook to hand him a reported $5.4 million check annually through the 2019-20 season.

That's $6.9 million Smith will make this season. Apparently, it's not enough to pay the grocery bills.

"At the end of the day, you know, I do have a family," Smith said. "So it is going to be a little harder on me this year. But I'm going to push through it

Smith said that the Pistons wanted him to play the three position, which he described as "foreign" to him. He said being waived by them ended up being a "blessing in disguise."

He said he envisions his role on the team as being multifaceted.

"Just being able to contribute on both ends of the floor, being versatile, like I've always been in my career," Smith said. "Just going out there and playing in a loose offense and great defensive philosophy."

Not only did they try and make him a 3, they tried it in an age where 2s are moving to the 3 and 4s to the 5. Sometimes going the opposite direction of your competition just helps get you further behind.
