this is the worst case scenario obviously. I was for some reason optimistic that we could sneak into the top 3 and even steal the #1. but of course the odds wouldn't allow that, would they? no- instead they let a team with an even WORSE chance at the #1, Cleveland, win the #1 again. 3rd time in 4 years. I'm not into conspiracy theories but......

anyway even if we only ended up with #8, I'd feel pretty good. there are some awesome players in this class and even at #8 we could land a guy who could really push our franchise forward. hell even stauskus is IMO a guy who could be agreat pickup especially as we build around Drummond.

getting the #1 would have changed the fortune of this franchise for the next 10 year +. instead we of course struck out and end up with NOTHING.

I'm generally an optimistic person but this was our chance. now with the way this team is constructed, we will be doomed to mediocrity until we are consistently terrible enough to get top level talent. hate to say that but it's true. we can add a nice FA and hope to make a good trade. but the reality is in today's nba you need an elite superstar and generally that player needs to be a wing. so even if Drummond becomes shaq, we need an elite SF or SG and we can't acquire one if we're drafting in the teens or early 20s every year.

I fully expect us to make the playoffs and maybe even make a nice FA signing that will help us make some noise. some internal growth by our current players would help a ton. but without an elite perimeter player- like an Andrew wiggins type talent!- then we'll only ever be good enough to make the playoffs and lose in round 2. if we're lucky.

get ready for 10 years of mediocrity since we have too much talent to strip the team down and get a top lotto pick but we don't have enough talent to truly compete. this was as sad a day in recent pistons history, given how the franchise went from the possibility to elevating to an eventual top tier team, to now being doomed to mediocrity.

I'm not salty about this because the Pistons were going to suck no matter who they picked and they were going to lose a pick no matter what in the next draft.

Get ready for the fire sale.

I'm trying to think positively -- perhaps the Cavs can screw up #1 two years in a row.

well IMO that logic doesn't make sense because this year's draft looks MUCH better than next year's prospects. plus, I feel pretty confident that with van gundy at the helm, we'll improve enogh to make the playoffs next year. so we'll be good enough to make the playoffs and therefore not bad enough to blow up the team or get a good draft pick. that is why I say that we're likely to be stuck in mediocrity for a LONG time.

damn the knicks for taking cleanthony early. totally wanted that kid. I would actually take G-rob. developing shooter and great athlete. he'll be a much better pro on the right team.

still dreaming that we can trade for stauskas somehow but I guess that ship has sailed. that kid is awesome and would fit in so well in Detroit.

1st round talent? BUT IS THAT TOP 8 TALENT???

MikeMyers
06-26-2014, 11:18 PM
If you're first rd talent then you get picked in the first round. He's second round talent.

Higherwarrior
06-26-2014, 11:18 PM
if he hadn't been injured you would've asked that question 20 picks ago. he's a player.

plus, did you see his moustache? that alone tells me this kid is a baller.

Higherwarrior
06-26-2014, 11:19 PM
If you're first rd talent then you get picked in the first round. He's second round talent.

not in a really deep draft and when you're injured. happens all the time- if someone else is healthy and is a comparable talent, they'll take the healthy guy obviously. if he wasn't injured, he goes in the first for sure.

Timone
06-26-2014, 11:20 PM

"This is a great pick for the Pistons. Dinwiddie would've been a first-round pick if he hadn't blown out his ACL. He's a big guard who can play both the 1 and the 2. He's not a great athlete, but he's very crafty and has a high basketball IQ. The Pistons could use a player like this in their backcourt. He's the anti-Brandon Jennings."

the 'anti-Brandon jennings'? already love this kid.

Higherwarrior
06-27-2014, 06:03 AM
If you're first rd talent then you get picked in the first round. He's second round talent.

kind of a ridiculous statement considering the list of allstars and undervalued players who have slid into the 2nd round. is this another one of them? I'm not saying that but just pointing out how silly your statement is. there are plenty of examples which would prove your statement wrong.

Vinny
06-27-2014, 09:02 PM
I get what you're saying but you can't use exceptions to prove rules. MM's point is pretty incontrovertible....if he were a first round talent by very definition he would have been taken in the first round.

Higherwarrior
06-28-2014, 03:41 PM
it's not a rule. if it were a rule, every single guy with 1st round talent would be taken in the first round. not to mention, every guy taken in the 1st round would actually be a 1st round talent! would you agree lots of guys taken in the 1st round eventually prove to have been huge mistakes in evaluation? of course they were.

and I was not trying to prove a rule I was simply pointing out that there are exceptions to that statement....and that Dinwiddie is clearly one of them. every source I've heard and read have said he's a 1st round talent who went in round 2 because of his injury and the depth of this draft. to say otherwise is to ignore the reality of his situation. will he end up being a good player? time will tell. but all evaluations at this point are that he is a 1st round talent. I've seen some sources even suggest he was a fringe lottery player.

Higherwarrior
06-28-2014, 03:43 PM
I get what you're saying but you can't use exceptions to prove rules. MM's point is pretty incontrovertible....if he were a first round talent by very definition he would have been taken in the first round.

no. by every definition if he were a 1st round draft pick, he would've been taken in the 1st round. you can disagree if you like, but saying he is a 1st round talent does not mean that he would have necessarily been taken in the 1st round. that's not necessarily the case.

Vinny
06-28-2014, 04:14 PM
Guys with top-top talent get taken in the first regardless of the black marks, be them injuries, character questions, etc. He didn't have the talent for that injury to be ignored. This isn't that complicated.

That's not to say that he can't play like a first-rounder but as is, he did not have first round talent, he had second round talent.

Uncle Mxy
06-28-2014, 09:17 PM
