Speaking as someone who's been involved with buying healthcare insurance for others for a long time...

AFAICT, Obamacare did very little to *prevent* insurers from offering whatever the fuck low end plans they want.
(The high end is a different story, but that's bypassed with "supplemental" insurance atop the <$10k plans to dodge the "cadllac tax")

Obamacare simply didn't allow plans to be grandfathered where the insurer was going to fuck with the price/structure of the plan. An insurer can't call this year's plan the same plan as last year when it costs 30% more and covers less, at least not for grandfathering purposes.

Insurers decided to jack up rates before it became harder for them to do so, and blame Obamacare. The same shit happened with other industries where cost regulations happened.

We need a single payer system bad. Health care has been so fucked up the last 40 years with premiums and medications going through the roof. Also, fuck employers that pay employees minimum wage and don't offer health care. They are the fucking worst. Basically slavery.

Actually, it would be worse if the employer offered the health care, the employees would have to accept it, which they probably can't afford. 9.5% annual is a lot of money for the dirt poor. At least by not offering it they can be eligible for medicaid (where applicable, which is fucking retarded that any state would refuse it) or heavily subsidized plans on the exchange they can afford.

And this is the endgame. In 2015 Employer Shared Responsibility Payment goes into effect. https://www.healthcare.gov/what-is-the-employer-shared-responsibility-payment/
This forces everyone(50+) to start offering affordable health care to employees. Or pay a fine.
This is essentially going to force big business to lobby for a single payer health system now that we are never going back to the way things were.

That is the end game pretty much all the way around, all of this is just a slow process of moving to single payer nationally. Republicans had to be dragged along into this shitty system so we could get the real solution. If everyone would have been a lot less of a dumbass in the first place we could have just skipped all the nonsense in the first place, had a single payer system, and everyone would be just peaches.

PS, congratulations to Vermont for realizing this before anyone else and saying lets just fucking do our own single payer http://www.policymic.com/articles/70549/vermont-wants-to-be-the-first-state-with-universal-health-care
As more states do this, and it continues to work (it will) everyone will realize the cost benefit of doing it nationally.

Such a travesty it has to be done this way because we let ignorant hilljacks dominate half the politics in this country.

You already pay $50 for a burger when you have to subsidize slave corporations because their employees need medicaid and food stamps because they get paid fucking shit for a wage. Shits worse than slavery. At least the slave master would take you to the doctor.

Premiums have been going up 10% a year since 1995. Go eat a burger.

Our plans at work have gone up 20%+ annually (cost to the employee) every one of the last 5 years, even with our HR dept shopping them every year. My employer even started paying a larger share to help offset the increases to employees.

And that's not a 20%+ increase on the same plans, deductibles have risen, too.

Yes. I used to have to buy our plans. Annual increases have been insane for 10 years. Exact same story, I had to cut back our benefits repeatedly just to keep it to ONLY a 10 % increase.

I really liked this post.

There was so little about the process or the result that I felt good about, but all I cared was that something got done and hope that it would be the first step to a real single player system.
