I don't really know right now. I think they have a good shot IF a lot of stuff happens. I think they need to have a deadly second line without having to break up 13 and 40. I think they need to be able to roll at least 3 lines without hesitation. See that's the part where Helm was so good. The Wings need to be able to have a third line that can hold a good shift against a top one or two line so that Babs doesn't have to overmatch on the road in the playoffs. They have to be able to control the puck the length of the ice and work the puck low. Their overall team D had to keep turnovers down. These are issues that cost them playoff games and series IMO. They have the talent and the youth I think.

The control and turnover/D part is huge. Our disagreements on Howard nothwithstanding, he can win a period and a game or two in the playoffs. But he's not going to carry them for a series. But with good play he can be enough.

I'm not sold on the Penguins. The Bruins are really good. Their team forecheck is awesome. The Wings need to have the engine running well to get by them or Chicago.

That 4th goal for example is my dream goal. The young 3rd or 4th line moving their legs, pressuring down low, getting pucks to the net and crashing like mad. That's got to be happening, goals or no, for them to have a great shot at winning.

The Howard questions are important. There's a huge difference between him having to carry a series and him having to be really solid. But he does have to be really solid. The Wings will need to take at least one road playoff game, maybe steal one. And he's going to have to be a part of that.

I would say 3rd to 5th is a good spot for them. No way can you say they're ahead of Chicago or Boston. Then there's the Penguins or Anaheim or LA maybe. But that's it right now.

The Wings have great pieces. They have old dudes but great youth. They have defensive talent and size and a lot of good two-way players. They should be worth investing the time.

The Jets have to be upset to be tied. That second goal was awesome and Howard robbed that dude. But the Jets are definitely skating and playing better.

Since really I'm just monologuing here I was thinking about my thoughts on basketball and hockey. I really like basketball but I'm far from as knowledgeable as other posters. I couldn't really offer good ideas about the Pistons frontcourt spacing or how Smith or Monroe should play on the elbow. But I find that so much of what I like in hockey I like in basketball. Awesome, aggressive team defense. Movement and passing. In hockey I love playing down low in the other teams end; in basketball I like an inside outside game. With both I like to get as many shots as close the the net as possible. I like crashing and rebounds. Just random thoughts.

So I was all ready to gush about this period until they gave up that goal. I do really like how they've come out to play.

Ugh. They can play well all they want, but they just aren't solid defensively.

The Wings have a lot of issues. They're just weak. Weak skating, weak defense, weak in front of the other teams net, weak checking....

I watch Franzen and I realize that not keeping Hossa is one of Holland's biggest and most recent failures. I know he tried but he should have said and shown that Hossa was his first and only priority and everything else be damned. It would have even been worth it to let Franzen go and give his spot to someone younger and more physical. That's with 20/20 hindsight of course.

Howard's not playing great, but he's not even close for what's wrong with the team. The turnovers they commit are horrible. You see them just standing around in their own zone looking around for whom to cover while the opposing team is skating and moving and getting good opportunities. For over half of every game they can't forecheck for shit and they suck at pressuring the other team's D.

The real truth IMO isn't that Howard isn't in a big slump. He's not not doing really well. So you mix the fact that opposing teams don't need a lot of shots because the chances they're getting are really good plus Howard's not saving the team because he's not doing so great and you get what we've been seeing.

I don't care about the goalie situation really. I care about the horrible fore and backchecking from the forwards, the sloppy turnovers from the defense and the utter lack of continuous pressure. You get that and your goalie doesn't look so bad. Ever notice how teams that are playing great always seem to have hot or at least solid goaltending? It's connected. You could put and in his prime Wah and that wouldn't change the Wing's problems right now.

On a final note, Gus being undefeated is awesome. I do hope that helps the team. But they played not great in Buffalo and he gave up monster rebounds. Buffalo however was just sucky enough to lose anyways. If having Gus in the nets gets the team moving and playing better I'm all for it. But I've watched a few of the Flyers recent games. They pressure the shit out of the puck. The Wings better be ready to skate or Gus will really have to show he can save their asses.

Shit, they actually play the Bruins tomorrow. That will be a good test for the team and Gus.

I actually got to go the game tonight (it was when I got called and asked to go that I realized they were playing the Bruins). That was by far their best game of the last 6 weeks maybe the whole regular season. It was easily Franzen's best game. He skated and got to the net and created chances and used his body. Tartar is awesome. His goal was just about moving and getting low and going to the net. His whole line was great.

It was really interesting. Babcock started with Helm centering Abs and Alfredsson. Boston started their best line with Bergeron and Marchand and Chara out there on D. But the Wings were all over them right from that first shift and they never stopped. They never let Boston get their forecheck going and they pressured the Bruins everywhere all game. Amazing fun.

The only thing that pissed me off, other than they didn't get the shutout, was everyone leaving early. Sure the Wings had 6 and the game was over. But the team finally gave a great game at home, fucking stay and give it up to them at the end.

On a side note, while the stadium wasn't full at all, I swear tonight had a much better energy than most of the games I've seen at the Joe. I guess being so close to vacation the regulars we're gone and replaced by a younger crowd ready to party. Other than the one fight that broke out (a bunch of twenty year olds drinking at a hockey game, not a surprise or a big deal really), it was a much more fun crowd IMO. It felt more like going to my school's hockey games in college.

Another random memory you don't care about: One of the loudest, maybe the loudest, game I ever saw at the Palace was Game 5 of the 1990 Finals. The Pistons put the game on the screens there and charged something cheap for tickets, like five or ten bucks. The stadium was packed and the crowd's age had to average 18 or 20. It was an amazing party. You'd have thought the roof would blow off when VJ hit that shot.

Howard is nowhere near back to being tops. I loved that 24/7 show on the Wings and Leafs even though I'd have wished for much more inside stuff. But you saw two great points out of Babcock that show. One point is that the Wings now need great goal-tending more than ever. Before they needed solid goal-tending. Now, because they score less (according to Babcock) and they are not as strong defensively as a team (according to me) they need much more out of their goalie. Howard can and needs to be that guy.

The second goal was all his fault. Fucking Pavelski (who owns the Wings so often) was on his normal side and at a horrible angle to get that in on the short side. Howard's been soft on his angles and especially bad at seeing the puck this year. The other 3 goals though had to do with the Sharks just being that much better. Elliot showed the best stat of all, three of those goals came from San Jose's 1 line scoring on the Wings 1 line. Z was as absent from the game as Datsyuk.

It's what you and I talked about before. Howard will have to not only be good but be great to cover up the mistakes this team is going to make defensively. I like Gus, he's aggressive and when he's on he sees the puck like it's going in slow motion. But unless Gus finds an even higher level that I haven't seen, Howard's still the guy who's shown the ability to carry the Wings.

Not to knock Smith but it did occur to me that the Wings are one quality player away from a really good D. Kronwall, Ericsson and Dekeyser are really good. The rest are good. One more top D would give the Wings two really top pairings and good third.

Smith has two horrible habits that might kill his future if he can't squash them: he gets caught too often pinching at the wrong time (this is actually something you see him get bitched out for by Babcock on HBO. His thing about vets is only half true. And that's the key to his pull (I think Whitlock's got a lot of this too), he speaks about something that had a bit of truth and paints an entire canvass with it. The Wings should never have signed Sammie or Tootoo and they shouldn't have signed Franzen to that contract years ago. The best way to see youth is to give them a consistent shot at playing.

However Bert does a lot on the ice that doesn't get talked about. He keeps pressure alive. He makes some nice passes. He get puck to the net and gets to the net. His scoring has all but died. And he's not been really good lately. But his contract wasn't that bad.

Cleary can't score to save his life. And for some reason he's making some obviously bad plays. But he was a steal for a one year contract on the fourth line.

Howard this year has been all right, sometimes not even that, and he's not been that goaltender that's held them in games. Really neither has Gus, who's played well for a backup.

Now count the goaltenders that are playing just out of this world and keeping their teams in games and up or close in the standings. Miller of course. Quick for sure (and notice they're both on Team USA which should be interesting). Lunquist they say has been damn good. Rask has been solid but not overpowering. Crawford is not great. Neither of the Blue's goalies are anything amazing. Fleury is either decent or overrated. The fact is that there aren't that many stellar goalies; there are a good number of really good ones and sometimes they go through some great moments.

Take the last ten Stanley Cup winners. I would argue that really two of them, at most three, had goaltending being one of the absolute reasons for the win, LA with Quick, and Bruins with Thomas. Fluery can have great weeks and he can be soft as hell. Giggy destroyed the Wings that year Babcock beat them with the Ducks but I think Carlyse's style gave the Ducks that Stanley Cup. Brodeur is Brodeur of course so you can argue that I should have three of the last then, and you could be right. With Chicago's two wins you had Niemi who was solid that year and Crawford who was just good enough. Ozzie was awesome the year that Wings won but it was that amazing team play that won the cup. The following year you couldn't blame Ozzie for the lost and I will go to my grave believing that the Penguins won that cup because of the play of their defensemen.
