This team is incredibly close to being 6-1, but due to lack of clutch play on basic special teams plays and questionable time management/decision making by our coaching staff, we're 4-3 and will have to try for a wild card spot, as the Rodgers-led Packers are undoubtedly still the best team in the division.

The Lions, IMO, have enough talent to make and compete in the playoffs this year. Houston has to rebound from his terrible game this week. The Cowboys aren't going to be an easy win, by any stretch, but I think the Lions should take this one at home.

So I went to the game. It was so old school for me. My dad basically sold his tickets to my uncle and the guy my dad always shared the tickets with (back even in the Tiger Stadium days) sold his to his son. So now those two spit the 4 tickets for the most part. Only today was like old times, it was my dad and I and the friend and his son. We even started reminiscing a lot 'cause today was alumni day. By the way, Mel Farr and Lem Barney sang backup vocals on Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On (one of my all-time favorite songs ever). They showed that on the scoreboards today.

And then we started talking about a game I went to in fourth grade, when the Lions beat the Cowboys on a last second Eddie Murray field goal with 12 men on the field.

See, for those of you who ever went to games at the Silverdome, leaving early never really mattered. The traffic and exits sucked ass and unless you left at the start of the 4th (which sure did happen) you might as well stay because you were stuck in traffic no matter what. Another great reason for the move back to downtown. At some point my dad and his friend just decided they'd always stay, there was no reason not to.

So when Dallas went up and half the stadium left, just like old times, we stayed. Wow.

Tahoe, I think your coaching points about Stafford might be on to be honest. I think the Lions have decent or mediocre coaches in Shorts and Linehan. But they aren't great. Linehan can call some stupid stuff at stupid times and he can be late at adjusting. The sweep when they're at the 4 on 1st down and losing was just plain stupid.

But Stafford's the real deal. Only one of his interceptions was his fault, though it was fucking bad both for the interception itself (only looked one way and never should have thrown that ball) and the score.

But the dude's got balls. I don't know if TV picked it up but he was the only one back on that interception (another reason it was so, so bad) and he took off and chased that Cowboy down the field. He didn't get the tackle but his chase stopped a pick 6.

But he also had at least 4 really bad drops and the other interception was all Calvin. Add to that the Bush fumble.

And then he and Shorts get incredible props for balls today. Shorts decides to give the field goal and take the 40 seconds. That means he knows it's now TD or bust and he's now put it all on Stafford's shoulders. And the dude fucking delivered. His touchdown was smart and ballsy at the same time. The field was pure chaos at that moment. Half the guys on the field on both sides had thought the previous play was a TD. Reiff, he's 71 right, was even dancing off the field while Shorts and everyone on the sidelines are yelling at him that he's got to get back. Which, on a side note, was funny to see him run full sprint the 40 yards back to the line. Everything was crazy and Stafford saw that and took a gamble that he could get in. Which he did twice since after his dive he then went untouched into the end zone to celebrate.

I don't think Shorts can take this team to the Super Bowl. The D played great but gave up a few big plays at the wrong time. Those turnovers were huge. The Lions should have been up by over 20 at the half (and how many times has that happened this year). The kickoffs were scary. The offense can rack up yards but lacks that something to control a whole game. The defense can shut down the other team but just not do enough at the right times. That to me seems more like coaching than talent.

But for today, Ain't No Party Like a Detroit Party. Hell, I was singing the damned fight song at the top of my lungs and I grew up hating it (though the guy who does it now is 1000000x better than the dude when I was a kid). One of the most memorable games I've seen and it was especially nice to see bandwagon Dallas fans take it up the ass.

Tahoe brings up such an important point with this team. I wouldn't say it's just the stats themselves but the fact that the Lions dominate for parts of games and can move the ball a ton and get tons of stops. And yet, they have so many problems getting it done when it counts and just dominating for an entire game.

I think this is on both sides of the ball. And I think it's coaching. I hate robbing this from the Bill fucking Simmons but the Patriots are the exact opposite of the Lions. They can suck it up and still just do enough and do it right to win. The Lions only have done this once that I can remember, that game in Tampa two years ago (was it two years ago). In basketball the Spurs do this and the Larry Brown Pistons had games like that too (that game 7 in Miami even though it should never have gone 7 in the first place).

Stafford though is the real deal I think. And he's so fucking young too. He's still a couple of years away from what are usually the prime years of a QB. There's still upside and you can see he's learning too. Other than today's glaring example I don't think he forces the ball as much. I'm not against his sidearm if he's strategic with it at the right time. I think he's cut down on the sidearm throws. He steps up in the pocket more than he did last year and two years ago.

That front 4 is the real deal. They may not have gotten a sack but they collapsed that pocket on a ton of plays and got to Romo. Fairley got in two crushing hits. Like Romo was the last guy off the field type hits. But the CBs are weak and I think there's something about them giving up those horrible big plays.

I'm not against trying to get another good OL piece or two, they could use it. But the OL's looking pretty good. They give Stafford decent protection for most of the game. I think they're a part of the success of the running game. I also think that with Reggie, Bell and Calvin they've got some nice pieces for the running game. I use Calvin because if the D wants to commit or cheat to him the Lions have a better chance of running IMO. You could see the Cowboys having problems with that. How they would try to cheat with their linebacker and safetys affected the plays the Lions ran. At the same time, Calvin had holes because they had to play the run, and not just if Reggie was in the backfield (love what Bell brings so much).

And sometimes fuck the D, Megatron will just fuck them up triple teamed.

I couldn't agree more with you on Bell. I really think Bell's success has been tied to Reggie's. I mean I think he's doing great. But it's also a part of the fact that what Reggie has brought (mixed with Calvin) has allowed his game to be even more successful. But if the Lions didn't have Reggie or similar he would be floundering if he were the feature back. In fact we saw that when Reggie was out.

I do like the OL but I think you're 100% right about depth there and at RB. I always remember what Peter King would write every week when he was ballwashing the Pats (deservedly or not). That the 42nd guy on their roster is better than almost everyone's 31st and that's huge in the NFL. I don't think the Lions are deep after 22 or 25 most likely. I don't think Shorts and crew can make it to the SB, and I'm hope I'm wrong, but Mayhew has to prove he can get that over 30 player depth like the Pats, Packers or Steelers have had in their days to show he can get to the next level as GM.

See, I don't get everyone jumping on Joique's nuts this year. i love him, don't get me wrong but I thought he played better last year, and hasn't been great in short-yardage this year...gets stuffed a lot (that's on the oline too...). I haven't seen him be the 'tank' that everyone keeps acting like he is.

I didn't dislike him last year. He seems to be getting it done on first down this year. Better Oline? Maybe. I don't like the plays Whinehan calls for him but still like the result more often than not. I wish he would run him stright up the gut. A gap or whatever they fuckin call it.
