It's been pretty reliable so far; I had some connection issues early on in my new building but apparently that was just connection issues in the building in my tier. Been pretty solid of late, no real complaints - no contract is nice.

DrRay11

No, but I think Scott Linehan is more to blame at this point for our offense's shortcomings. STATSford has a cannon, yet we run all this dink and dime shit constantly.

On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate Gym as an NFL head coach?

DrRay11
09-16-2013, 08:10 PM
Right now, I'd say somewhere between a 5 and 6 out of 10. That being said, unless he gets much better quickly, he'll hold the team back. His strengths are in his philosophies, statistics, and logical approach to each game.

However, he doesn't take it far enough. He needs to strengthen the team's discipline and have better backup options ready to bust out when his first game plan doesn't work. He needs better time management skills as well. The mismanagement of the last 53 seconds of the first half this week was brutal - that is where you need to try and go for the throat. Strengthen those three issues, and IMO you have an 8.5 out of 10 or some such, with the last missing points coming from lack of innovation, less-than-perfect player development, etc.

Sadly, he's looking awfully stubborn with his inability to recognize the fact that discipline is an issue, so I'm not sure about his ability to go further. Regarding the time management and lack of innovation, that is probably more Linehan - it would be interesting to see what Jim could do with another OC. I'm not whether he delegated the decision whether to settle with the lead or go for the throat at the half.

All in all, quite a bit of potential as a young coach, but needs to swallow his pride on a few key issues.

Solid. I'm still wrong, but I think I learned something from that post.

Lions...relevant next year? I don't think they will be, but this thread ain't about me.

DrRay11

It depends how they attack the offseason. A lot of the talent sticks around, we'll have nice draft picks to add to that and possibly one medium name FA.

Really, it depends on the new offense and whether the new coaching staff is successful in bringing Stafford to his potential. Time will tell. If that happens, we'll compete for the Norse and possibly more.

Tahoe
01-10-2014, 03:26 AM
Where do you rank Stafford amongst current QBs in the league?

DrRay11
01-10-2014, 09:48 AM
Let's put them in tiers. It's hard to rank between tiers because of different situations and teams.

First tier:
Rodgers
Brees
Manning
Brady

Next tier (near-elite performance):
Andrew Luck
Russell Wilson
Cam Newton
Philip Rivers (one or two bad seasons among a bunch of very good ones)
Eli Manning (super bowls)
Ben Roethlisberger (super bowls)
Joe Flacco (super bowls)

Next tier (promising talent, but jury is out):
Matthew Stafford
Tony Romo
Colin Kaepernick
Ryan Tannehill
Matt Ryan
RGIII

Too soon to tell / game managers:
Geno Smith
Nick Foles
EJ Manuel
Mike Glennon
Andy Dalton
Alex Smith

Probably crap:
Jake Locker / Ryan Fitzpatrick
Sam Bradford
Carson Palmer
Case Keenum
Matt McGloin

Scum:
Christian Ponder / Matt Cassel
Brandon Weeden / Jason Campbell
Chad Henne / Blaine Gabbert
Terrelle Pryor

So, somewhere between 12th - 17th right now.

What do you think of Quinn's depth moves?

DrRay11
03-31-2016, 08:23 AM
What do you think of Quinn's depth moves?

I like it, but need to see the full offseason (plus draft) to judge. Glad he just picked up Geoff Schwartz for o-line depth - need to get past the days where one injury kills the team, and he's steering the team in that direction. Couple that with better drafting and I think we'll be in for a power shift in the NFCN as the Bears, Lions, and Vikings all could potentially sit atop the stubborn Packers if Rodgers ever regresses (please!)

Look at Miami's high priced FA signings - they typically don't work out or only for a short period of time. I am good with Quinn's moves so far as they recognize the importance of special teams and depth - no more Corey Fuller holding downfield on ST! The WR corps is fine and is already arguably deeper than last year. It might take a couple of years to build via BPA through the draft but I think the approach is good.

How do you feel about it?

DE
03-31-2016, 01:02 PM
I'm not very good at figuring out the quality of talent and where the needs and holes are., but I've been thinking at least about his direction strategically.

I think just saying he's using the Patriot blueprint is easy but often, like Scott Pioli, you see that the Patriot protogees actually don't. But it seems to me that he's infusing the Lions with three of the big Patriot traits: 1. Depth, depth depth. Even though the dude has Belichick butt around the lips, Peter King once made a great point about the Pats depth by saying that their 42nd guy is better than your 28th and that's vital. That one always stuck with me (probably have mentioned here a few times at least). 2. Financial flexibility. He doesn't seem to be willing to over invest in a player. I want to say over invest because sometimes you do have to pay up a bit more, it's just the situation. 3. No overly emotional ties to players. In channelling my inner Drew Sharp (and if this post absolutely sucks that's why) I really think some Lions fans will get a "be careful what you wish for" scenario when Quinn pulls a Bill Walsh and gets rid of a beloved veteran one year too early rather than keep him around years to late (something the Lions had mastered).

I like the framework and direction but it really does come down to if he can spot that kind of talent doesn't it? Especially in mid to late rounds, right? If he and Caldwell mesh on talent they could have actual depth. And, honestly, I like that he kept Caldwell. It's cliche but I do think Caldwell has proven to be a good Monday to Saturday coach. The Lions have to develop talent and create depth to even be a contender. They're not really at a point where game day coaching blunders can cost them anything yet IMO.
