I just bought one. A company I used to do some work for bought a bunch and didn't need them. $120 new. I tried to get a couple more but no dice. So I don't even know shit about them. Anyone have any info?

Its not a phone but you can do facetime, skype or some shit like that? I don't have it in my hands yet, but noticed on a photo that it has a 'messaging' icon for texting like my iphone, so how does it indentify you for texting if there isn't a number associated with it?

I'm thinking MGM must have wifi so I might let my girl use it when in Vegas so she can find whatever the hell it is she might be looking for.

But a purchase price of 120, would you do it? or just throw the fucking thing in the garbage?

I'll hang up and listen.

No. You can only send/receive to/from Apple
devices as they use iMessage and your connected email address(es) to accomplish
this. The iPad mini does not know your cell phone's number- it just knows your
Me/iCloud account.

Also
note that, physical limitations aside, even with a sim and a "phone number" for
your iPad mini, you can not send/receive texts/calls because you would
only have a data plan through your wireless carrier.

There is an app called Talkatone in the App Store. This basically is Google
Voice, and it enables you to make free calls and texts using your
wifi.

The app will walk you through setting this up, it's very easy. I
have the ipad3 with wifi, and with my cable service at home, I can connect to my
private network that's secure. You can get a new Google Voice phone number to
use, or you can use your current cell number. Under the settings in Talkatone,
you can have incoming calls and/or texts ring all of your devices, such as your
computer, cell, ipad, etc.

This Talkatone app is great, and you can text
anyone free with it, unlike using the iPad's messaging, because you can only
text people who have iMessage.

I have a prepaid cell phone with
TMobile, $50.00/month. I get a free wifi hotspot on this, so when I am away
from the house, I turn this feature on, and my ipad uses my cellular data to
connect and use as a phone. The TMobile hotspot allows you to connect up to 8
devices to share your data connection with. At home, I turn the hotspot off on
the cell phone, and use my wifi only to make and receive calls.

It has
been flawless so far, and I encourage you to look into it!

Bought one for my wife for her birthday. Got a helluva deal, but still almost triple what you just paid. Buy as many of those sumbitches at that price as they will let you.

Thanks Mr DanZ.

Just started setting it up 15 mins ago. Haven't sync'd to my music library yet, but expect to here shortly. The screen seems to be big enuf. I don't think I'd want that extra weight or size of the screen size, if you know what I mean. The mini's screen seems to be plenty big without it being huge to handle.

^ I'm sure I just opened myself up for all sorts of 'size' jokes, but lets keep the 2nd grade humor to a minimum. Nah...fuck that.

I'd buy an oversized iPod Touch for $120.
