View Full Version : PREDICT-A-COACH
Glenn 04-28-2013, 09:03 AM If y'all remember, I went outside the box and predicted Larry Frank before he was ever discussed.
Same story this time, not saying it's who I want, but this is who I think it will be:
Larry Drew.
Uncle Mxy 04-28-2013, 11:34 AM Joe Dumars
Glenn 04-28-2013, 11:37 AM Despite having zero coaching experience, that's actually logical. Gores could make him coach in an effort to keep his job.
Koolaid 04-28-2013, 08:36 PM I would like to see joe d as the coach. i wanna see how he would use the team he assembled. it makes sense. i doubt it would happen though.
the name i never hear of in the press is avery johnson, but i think he could be a candidate as well.
Glenn 04-28-2013, 08:57 PM I wouldn't be surprised to see Joe do something silly like bring Alvin Gentry back.
Glenn 04-29-2013, 05:33 PM McMillan suddenly back in play...
Pharaoh 05-01-2013, 07:14 AM Obradovic...
would surprise everyone and is a "swing for the fences" type of move
If he is as good as his record shows we get a quality coach, shock the nation and get a dude we can keep long term
If he fails Joe goes down with his Euro pick and 2 "legends" of the game hang their heads in shame on their way out :-)
Tahoe 05-01-2013, 01:34 PM I don't know who, whom?, but this coaching carousel has got to stop.
Pharaoh 05-02-2013, 06:14 AM IMO Nate McMillan or Avery Johnson is the safe option.
We get them to coach us for 4 years and then fire them and hire someone that can "take the next step"
OR we go for Obradovic, who could (maybe?) be a long term hire here, build a structure that's successful and give us long term success
IF I was Joe it would depend on my own job security. If his head is on the chopping block and he needs to be sure then you have to pick Nate/Avery. If he has time to wait it out Obradovic presents more "upside"
Glenn 05-02-2013, 07:14 AM Changing my predictsh to Sampson.
He's besties with Izzo, which means everything to Joe D
Timone 05-02-2013, 04:35 PM Put me down for The Czar!
Tahoe 05-08-2013, 07:38 PM I predicked...that it won't be what I want and that is a defensive minded coach. There are only so many superstars in the league that score and get calls and we dont have one. So I hope we go with a Thibedeau type coach. Still don't agree with letting Frank go. But a surprise pick for a coach might change my mind.
Uncle Mxy 05-11-2013, 11:33 PM Seemed dumb to let Frank go without a successor already lined up.
Glenn 05-29-2013, 05:43 PM The buzz around the NBA is that the two front-runners for the Pistons’ job are former NBA coach Nate McMillan and Oklahoma City assistant Mo Cheeks. However, the Pistons still could turn to Indiana assistant Brian Shaw or former Hawks coach Larry Drew.

DrRay11 05-29-2013, 10:48 PM Where's Tom Izzo?
Glenn 05-29-2013, 10:53 PM Thanks for the reminder, it's been a week or so.
Timone 05-29-2013, 10:57 PM Who do you guys have for new Pistons coach in 2015?
Uncle Mxy 05-30-2013, 07:21 AM Dick Pissworthy
BubblesTheLion 05-31-2013, 11:00 AM Use coach by expiration date printed on the label.
04/16/14
Glenn 05-31-2013, 05:38 PM Hammond just hired Drew, lol
Timone 05-31-2013, 05:59 PM My DARK HORSE CANDIDATE... are you ready for this?

Glenn 05-31-2013, 06:28 PM I think it's going to be Shaw now.
Glenn 05-31-2013, 06:29 PM Or #Izzo, of course.
Cross 06-02-2013, 07:39 AM The consensus in coaching circles is that Detroit is closing in on a choice between Cheeks, currently an assistant coach in Oklahoma City, and former Seattle and Portland head coach Nate McMillan.
There have been strong signals in recent days that Cheeks has already won the endorsement of Pistons president Joe Dumars, but the involvement of Phil Jackson in the Pistons' search as an adviser to Gores has led some to speculate that Detroit must still be waiting for Indiana's season to end to talk to Pacers associate head coach and longtime Jackson protege Brian Shaw.
Vinny 06-02-2013, 11:22 AM Bring on Shaw. We're running out of re-treads....
Uncle Mxy 06-03-2013, 08:26 AM It won't really matter anyway.

Glenn 06-06-2013, 08:26 AM @vgoodwill
On the report that 3 teams have had contact with Larry Brown, and if the 76ers and Nets are two, sources say the #Pistons aren't the 3rd
Timone 06-06-2013, 08:27 AM I would like to change my pick to PJ Carlesimo, thanks!
Glenn 06-06-2013, 02:12 PM Joe's always had a little Tarheel fetish, so I wonder if he likes Karl?
Glenn 06-06-2013, 02:14 PM Grizzlies talking to Karl already.
BubblesTheLion 06-06-2013, 02:55 PM It won't really matter anyway.

I think there are coaching tiers.
(T1)At the bottom , you have coaches that haven't the slightest idea what they are doing regardless of talent.
*see Mike Brown, VDN, (ps, how the fuck did this guy get rehired by the Cavs, I would be livid)
(T2)The lower tier, you have coaches who are competent enough to be competitive, but ultimately losers.
*see Lawrence Frank, Terry Stotts, Flip Saunders
(T3)Mid tier, you have coaches that get exactly what you expect from the roster. They add no value but they don't take anything away either.
*see the Van Gundy's, Rick Carsile, Mike Woodson, Pringles, Erik Spoelstra
(T4)Upper Crust, Guys who outperform the expectations of your roster.
*see Tom Thibodeau , Doc Rivers, Mark Jackson, Rick Adelman, LB, George Karl
(T5)The Hall of Famers. Guys who maximize the potential of a roster by design, cohesion, or teaching.
*see Phil Jackson, Greg Popavich, Jerry Sloan.
So the way I look at it is this.
If you have a bottom 14 team. A T5 Coach can probably get you in the playoffs and a 7 game first round(50/50)
A T4 will get you swept in round 1
A T3 will just miss the playoffs
A T4 is in the lottery
A T5 is picking top 3.
If you have a 16-8 team A T5 coach will get you swept in the finals
A T4 is going to the conference finals
A T3 first round 7 game series (50/50) renewed
A T4 swept out of the first round and shitcanned.
A T5 misses playoffs and gets shitcanned.
If you have a top 8 team A T5 coach will get you a ring
A T4 will get you to the conference finals
A T3 gets you game 7 (50/50) of round 2
A T4 loses a 7 game series in round one. Shitcanned
A T5 gets swept out of the playoffs. Shitcanned
If you have a top 4 team A T5 is getting you a ring
A T4 is losing to the T5
A T3 lost to them both in the conference final
A T2 got upset in round 2 Shitcanned.
A T1 loses a 7 game series in round 1. Shitcanned.
If you are Mike Brown, you got pictures of owners fucking little boys and keep getting paychecks.
Glenn 06-06-2013, 04:23 PM Wow, nice.
mercury 06-06-2013, 11:04 PM According to Goodwill & Yahoo it will be Mo Cheeks.... welcome to retread city
Uncle Mxy 06-06-2013, 11:44 PM I'd count Flip as mid-tier.
I'd have LB in T5. If I have a good team playing against a more talented team I know I would rather have LB as my coach than Phil Jackson. LB got way more out of way more teams than the Zen Asshole. I mean Zen should be T5 of course, no doubt, but other than the no-MJ years with the Bulls he's really been great at one thing: making sure championship talent wins championships. That's not easy to do and Zen's the best at it. But there are tons of areas I think LB is better than Jackson. And, plus, LB fucking smoked him in 2004.
I would also argue that should the Heat win the 'ship this year that Spoelstra be considered T4. That would give him 3 consecutive finals with 2 championships. You couldn't use the Lebron argument because Spoelstra would then be showing Phil Jackson like abilities to make sure that a championship level team wins championships.
Timone 06-07-2013, 02:42 PM I'm torn on Pringles. I don't think he's a complete retard or loser, but Tier 3 might be a tier too high.
MikeMyers 06-07-2013, 10:19 PM So what Tier is Mo Cheeks in
Cross 06-08-2013, 05:58 AM Mark Jackson is in the same cateogry as Tom Thibs and Doc Rivers? He's had 2 years of coaching experience, his first year was a huge fail although it was the lockout year and he had multiple injuries. And I hear all he really does is give motivational speeches during his timeouts while assistant coach Mike Malone was the real coach with all the x's and o's.
Uncle Mxy 06-08-2013, 07:03 AM Prick Carlisle is T4.
Cross 06-08-2013, 12:05 PM Some idiot that works for the free press..
Ellis writes: "The Pistons were seeking a positive influence on the bench, and Cheeks fits the bill. ... Much has been made of Cheeks’ influence on All-Star Russell Westbrook. He has been a calming influence on Westbrook, who has a combustible personality. It could rub off on third-year guard Brandon Knight. But think about Charlie Villanueva. Previous coaches have harped on Villanueva’s weaknesses -- namely his rebounding and defense. Cheeks’ personality will focus on Villanueva’s strengths -- shooting and scoring."
First of all Knight is not even comparable Westbrooks talent level..does Knight even have an ego or "combustible personsality?" And Charlie V?! He is such an insignificant piece to our roster. I have no idea how his name even came up.
Glenn 06-08-2013, 03:59 PM If Charlie V isn't amnestied I might quit.
Glenn 06-10-2013, 10:50 AM So what Tier is Mo Cheeks in
"Have us all in" Tiers
LOL!!
Glenn 06-10-2013, 10:59 AM I would have rather kept Frank.
:emo kid:
