Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason plus five regular-season games for his hit to the head of Chicago's Ben Smith earlier this week.

Brendan Smith's suspension, without pay, covers a total of eight games. He loses $23,648.65 in salary.

Under new NHL senior vice president Brendan Shanahan -- who was a former Red Wings star -- eight players have been suspended since the preseason began, for a total of 26 preseason games, 29 regular-season games and $666,186.89 in forfeited salary.

The Patriots should offer him a contract. They need dudes that can hit. LOL!!

One of my least favorite Brendan's EVAR.

Back in the day, this hit wouldn't have been mentioned, imo. Gordie would have told him to keep his head up.

I actually feel that the suspension is totally justified. The head down argument doesn't hold up here. If the defender's squares up the dude straight on, face to face, and the puck carrier's head is down when the guy checking lowers his shoulder that's one thing. That's why you teach kids to skate with their head up. But he came at him at an angle and lifted his elbow to get him from the side. It may not have been intentional but he could have pulled up IMO.

Of course he could have pulled up, but hockey, football, etc are contact sports. I saw nothing wrong with the hit.
