I had the pleasure of being tutored by Willie Stargell along with Orlando Cepeda & Tony Perez (all hall of famers) in Puerto Rico (jr. baseball camp) ... i was the bat boy for the San Juan Stars (MLB Winter League team)... Willie was down to earth... hard to explain but he was so respected by the team... a clubhouse leader...I remember him bringing in doughnuts (made sure we were taken care of)... always settling young players down... like a father... I'm not gonna ramble on... but you could not come up with a cooler more respected man than Willie.

That is fucking amazing. So cool. I've always respected Willie as well, dating myself but his HOF class was one of the first I remember getting voted in, actually THE first. I went right out and bought whatever baseball cards I could find of his (81 fleer maybe??), I thought it was so amazing.

atleast we didnt get swept. this season as been pretty frustrating, but as long as the starters play like this i wont worry.

our starters have the 4th best era in the AL. funny, considering how the year started.

i love boesch and avila, but i dont feel confident in them carrying this team to the playoffs. when mags comes off the dl (guillen's coming back too, lol) i'd like to see what he can do. if its more of the same, they need to find another bat.

as for letting porch get the CG, dont blame leyland at all. theres one guy in the pen i trust, and thats valverde. cant mess around in a 2 run game where we need a win. if it were the 7th and his pitch count were close, i'd have let him go again, just because i wouldve trusted him more than benoit or alb or whoever else. but gotta give it to the closer there.

Actually I really can't fault Leyland on his call. On one hand Porcello was pitching very well, had a low pitch count, and it would have boosted his confidence to finish out the game. One the other hand, Valverde is our closer and that is his job. We needed the win and Leyland made the call. Now Leyland saying that it was a no brainer was pretty arrogant of him and mad him look like an a$$. I bet that if you polled every major league manager on what they would have done, it would be much closer to 50-50 than 100-0.

Z you're right about two things. First of all it's a huge choke. With 8 minutes to go in the second extra time and a 1 goal lead, you hold the ball. You maintain possession. The US could have easily killed the game. They had the ball more than enough there. Hold onto the fucking thing.

And I am not impressed at all with Hope Solo. She's one of those goalies who can make that huge athletic saved but doesn't do the basic stuff right, and that always leads to goals. I believe she's responsible for all three goals the last two games (either the goals themselves or the play that lead to the corner where the teams scored). She never knows when to get off her back line for passes, crosses or corners.
