Honest strategy question: how did that factor into Leyland's decision?

If you're at home, there's never any potential for a save situation tied in the 9th or later....doesn't mean you can't still use your closer, but you have more incentive to because you're never going to have a lead to protect anyways.....if you win it's going to be a walk-off. Many teams use their closers in non-save situations and I imagine Leyland would have considered it in the 10th/11th when the top of the order came back around. To imply that they were identical decisions though is not correct.

So Leyland's not putting in Valverde there unless we had actually created a lead in the top of the 9th or later innings. I understand now. Thanks.

It wasn't a save situation but we needed the win or at least a chance to win. It would have likely bought us an more to score a run and since we were playing a weak team the next game, you might as well use him. I'd rather lose late with a lead then just get beaten. Al was just left in to get killed. A very curious or in my opinion, stupid move by Leyland. If Valverde doesn't pitch tonight then it was really wasted.
