THIS is a Red Wings playoff thread. Sorry for ever saying yes to that Flyer bandwagon Glan.

Five or six I think. Z gone could hurt us but if Pav plays like he did against Chicago, we get one other player like Bert or Mule or Cleary to stand out and we can be consistent on D we could make this a quicker, easier series.

We're going to have to make the most of quality chances because we might not see many. If we can't, or if we give them easy goals we'll be in for a tough series with the team D they play.

Yotes are one of those lunch pail teams. Nothing easy. Like you said though de, some steppin up in Zet's absence can get the job done.

Nothing's coming easy if our D doesn't step it up. I'm talking both forwards and defensemen. We played like garbage down the stretch and you know Howard's going to give up a few poor rebounds. I agree with Ux, I want it to be Wings in 5 but I feel like it's going to go 6.

I was too tired to post but I did enjoy staying up late to watch the game. If we switch to doing this via Twitter I can do that, but I'd create a second account just for it.

I was really impressed with the Wings last night. They didn't obliterate the Coyotes but I thought it was a great all-round game from a team on the road in the playoffs.

Some things I liked: First of all we scored goals and have been taking advantage of our good chances. I like how we had goals and good games from other players not named Datsyuk or on his line. If we can roll 4 dangerous lines we are tough. We've played good D five on five and even though they pressure and gain momentum they haven't completely owned us for any long stretches in our own end. Howard may not be super strong as a playoff goalie, but at least for this series he's improved a lot in not giving up those huge rebounds he often throws back out into the slot.

What I don't like are the goals they get on their powerplay. If Phoenix can do it so often, what happens if we play San Jose or Vancouver?

Same here, and most of the shit was totally clueless too. One time, a few minutes into the conversation with a guy who was all-knowing, he asked me some specifics about offsides calls . I mean, beyond the fact that the ref drops the puck and you try to put it in the net, that's about as simple as it gets. Got to love the sweep! Here's to hoping they don't come out flat in the next series after a long layoff. It'll be great to have Hank back and hopefully Franzen at full strength. Helm is a monster, he's my favorite guy to watch at this point. He always works hard and makes things happen.

Howard hasn't been perfect but he's head and shoulders above where he was last year. The biggest thing is the rebounds, like DE said. Not worrying about where the puck's going every single time the Coyotes took a shot was a relief. Wings need to step it up a bit on the defensive end. San Jose isn't going to let them get away with some of the things they could against the future-Jets.

Is it just me, or did it seem like they started strong then faded in games 2 and 3? Much improved from the slow starts and having to battle back into things that we've seen all season, but it had me worried that they were starting a new trend. Definitely didn't see it in game 4, though.

I've got a buddy that's a huge Buffalo fan. I keep telling him it's only a matter of time before they trade Ryan Miller to the Wings for Filppula and a first round pick. Spend every Sabres game saying how great Miller's going to look in a Wings jersey next year. Is this wrong? Is he already tormented enough being a Sabres fan?

Vinny
04-24-2011, 02:47 PM
You were pretty hard on him last year, I didn't think he was perfect but he wasn't the goddamned antichrist. Most of his bad playoff goals were against all those poorly officiated power plays and 5 on 3s that kept going against us. Motherfucker. (Bitch.)

04-24-2011, 02:49 PM

DE
04-24-2011, 07:35 PM
You're taking something to an unnecessary extreme here (well jokingly in this last post). That was the issue last year. I'll stick to the same opinion I had last year when we disagreed on this issue: he did not play like a playoff goalie. He did not do anything to keep the Wings from being bounced. That said, he was not the reason they did get bounced. San Jose beat them. The Wings were too damn tired from having to play playoff hockey the entire second half of the season and then going 7 against the Coyotes. They tried to play a purely finesse game against the Sharks and couldn't get production from more than one line. They were left with chasing the Sharks, taking lots of penalties (a lot of them shitty calls but you get those a lot when you're chasing a team) and letting their second line own us. If Howard had played like a playoff caliber goalie it would have helped, but the Wings as a team got deservedly beaten by the Sharks.

I'd love to take on the Sharks again. I loved how the Wings (for spurts anyways) played hard checking hockey against the Coyotes. I'd love to see them do that to the Sharks, check them and take the game to them. With Pav playing at a huge level and seeing lots of contributions from other players, Helm the beast especially, we could roll four lines on them. We've had some much needed rest as well. AND Howard has not been giving up those rebounds and looks like he can carry them for some minutes.

All that said, I would much rather argue with a Wings fan over Howard than read lame bandwagon threads about other teams in the NHL thread.

Zekyl
04-26-2011, 06:37 AM
Can't wait to see what that Helm, Eaves, Draper line can do against the Sharks. Let's see if it was just the Coyotes poor play or if they're really clicking as well as they seem.

You're welcome to call me out on this if I'm wrong, but I feel like last year I kept saying that Howard wasn't playing terrible. He was just giving up some bad rebounds. He seems to be doing better with that this year, and that's what I think the big difference is. He's not Dominik Hasek or Martin Brodeur, but he's a solid goalie that can keep things close and always give them a chance.

The Wings may just not have the talent to beat the Sharks. This is the second year in a row. I honestly believe that there is still a chance, but if not, I think Holland will have to address some issues in the offseason.

That said I have missed that Stanley Cup winning team every year since. Not because of the winning or losing, That team NEVER took a shift off, Never stopped skating. No team could move an inch. You don't see that anymore. Maybe for spurts but that's it. And, honestly, that's what it takes to beat the Sharks and win the Cup.

UxKa

Yeah that team was badass. Not the most talented from top to bottom, but they pressured like all hell all game. Kind of like the Sharks are doing to us O_o

Also... Abdelkader is killing me out there. Seems like the worst 2 games he's played this season have been against the Sharks. Dumb penalties, falling down, etc. I know there's a lot more blame to go around, but he's kind of stuck out to me.

Actually this series shows you exactly how wrong you were last year. What's the ONLY thing that has changed between the two series? Howard's playing better. Nothing else has changed. You could say that every other condition in this scenario is the same as last year. So if you change one variable (Howard's goaltending) and still get the same result, that means the variable did not affect the overall result. In other words, the Sharks have beaten the Wings BOTH years.

Fool
05-06-2011, 01:59 PM
That's naive.

DE
05-06-2011, 03:11 PM
On my part?

Here's what I think. Both years the Red Wings have been beaten cleanly by San Jose. How do I mean that? The Wings have had to work harder to dominate and have had to work harder to get goals. The Wings have not been able to control games (except for game 4 last year). They have dominated stretches but have never been able to build good leads (2+ goals) in those stretches. The Wings can put out Pavel and Hank and my dead grandmother and can dominate for that shift. Other than that players are on/off, hot/cold at best. I think the Wings were better in game 3 than games 1 and 2. However the Sharks played well enough to win those games. And they've won them. I think Sharks have dominated the play for two years in a row and that's why goaltending is not an issue at all for either of those two years.

I think the Sharks are the better team and that Wings need to realize that they are the underdogs. They don't. They haven't. The Wings may have better depth form lines 1 to 4, but the Sharks has gotten more production from their second and third lines. The Wings when they hit and play tight can win. If they let the Sharks skate freely they lose. The Sharks have skated freely too much in this series and therefore have won.

Honestly I don't think that's naive at all. I think for two years now I've been very honest in saying that maybe we need to re-evaluate the make-up of this team and see if we're missing a chip or two to be competitive again. I think losing Game 7 in the Joe in 2009 was a big indicator (in hindsight). We got beat in games 6 and 7 of that series and have not won a key series or a pivotal game against a top team since.

I also think I'm rambling.

So if you change one variable (Howard's goaltending) and still get the same result, that means the variable did not affect the overall result. In other words, the Sharks have beaten the Wings BOTH years.

I'll reply to this nonsense, complete nonsense, later.

I felt bad penalties were the problem last year in the playoffs. The Sharks had several 5-3's where they scored and took all of the momentum away.

See, I don't disagree with you here. Not at all. However I believe that the penalties were caused because the Wings weren't moving their feet enough and closing up space with their bodies. When you chase and lean out with your stick, you have a better chance at getting a penalty. When you're late getting to your man you have a better chance at getting a penalty. That's what happened last year IMO.

You always see it in hockey (most of the time anyway). The team that's moving it's feet more will be the one getting more PP's.

Last year, it was Howie's fault. This year. We're getting beat.

Dood... last year we got beat, and Howard wasn't playing as well as this year. Last year the team played like shit, or the Sharks played great, whatever. Face up to it man.

Nice to get the win tonight, but I'm not holding my breath.

Howards played better this year, but the Sharks outplayed us. Howie gave it to them last year.

He was laying out one save. This year he is staying up way better and getting in position for the next shot.

Own up to it and quit arguing.

The first two periods the Sharks would have the puck in their own zone and one pass later they had 2 guys flying past our blue line and shooting it on Howard. The Wings closed that down the third period, got on them and made it hard for them to coast through the neutral zone and in the middle of the Wings zone.

Can't believe how bad the Wings looked in the first 2, but wow that 3rd was awesome!

You know, you take out the order of the W/Ls in this series which is what makes it seem impossible... and really now it's just 3-2, as close as a series can be. We're on the wrong end of it, and sure we could packing after the next game, but I've lost the doom & gloom feeling now. Especially after how the Joe was rockin that last game, game 6 should be great.

Babcock so needs to sit Franzen and bring in Modano. Franzen is really hurt and hasn't done much at all. Modano, although old, is a proven 500 goal scorer who has historically been a very good playoff player. Add to that the fact that he is chomping at the bit to play, is well rested, and realizes that this may be his last game, should get us a good performance out of him. He can't be worse than a one legged Frazen right now and has a lot more upside.

What an awesome game. Uxka's right, a tight game like that is so much fun to watch.

I loved how the Wings played. Of course they got way more shots on goal but they got back to awesome Red Wing hockey. They played incredible team D, fore-checking the Sharks D, standing guys up in the neutral zone, back-checking hard...Our blue liners were awesome. And we cycled the puck down low a lot too.

Cleary looked like he was back in 08, Kronwall was all around brilliant, Flip was amazing. Datsyuk is the best player in the NHL and it's just as awesome to see other players step up.

And I loved to see/hear the Joe like that.

I intentionally avoided trolling this thread yesterday, that appears to have been a mistake.

Did you guys put your car flags away in the 2nd period, or did you make it all the way to the 3rd?

DE
05-13-2011, 08:26 AM
I've never been a fan of the flags either. But I'm sure that even real Flyer fans (you know the ones who actually call it their home-town team) do that too.

It hurt, but the Wings went down fighting. The Sharks played a tough game. I think the injuries to Bert and Cleary actually gave us a bit of a boost rolling three lines, but we were getting tired in the third. Wings still tired hard I think and really had a shot.

Aside from being sad about the Wings getting bounced I'm just as sad at not getting to see more of my favorite player doing his thing. Datsyuk almost willed us to tie that game last night. Honestly, has there been a better player in any sport over the last 6 weeks?

DE

BTW, I don't how much it compares in magnitude or circumstances but Hudler knocking out Cleary reminded me of VJ and AD cracking heads.

UxKa

While it sucks, it's a palpable loss considering they played tough the whole game, and lost a couple key players. You count Franzen too, and that's 3 top 10 Wings that were missing. I agree with you de, I think I'm saddest that I don't get to see Dats play for a few months. He may have single-handedly inspired me to get the NHL package next season.
